I have a picture from about 1959 of me at the sticky bun eating competition in the Clarion cycling club games, which took place in that field. Still getting back there regularly with my dad, who at 94 has been going there for about 78 years.

Thank you for making this video available to us. It’s a wonderful glimpse of a time, not too long ago, that deserves to be remembered if for nothing else than to show us, hopefully, how relatively good things are for us now.

I'm watching this at my home in France and weeping as I watch. I wish I had known about the Clarion when I lived there. I was born, bred and buttered in Colne and as a true socialist, this gives me renewed hope. My wife is from Bedfordshire. Colne is her adoptive heart home.

I found this informative video quite by accident but it was a pleasant surprise. I lived next door between ages 6 and 12 (1958 - 64) and spent many hours playing in the field and on the old swings and rocking horse, both of which are now gone, but it’s so nice to see the Clarion’s rejuvenation because in my day I hardly ever saw a soul. Thank you very much for this video and doing what you do.

An important point worth noting is that the council didn't demolish the empty blocks, they deconstructed them brick by brick the reason being that James Pullen had used recycled bricks and they were now more valuable than new bricks. Also another important point was that the squatters managed to get an English Heritage preservation order listed on the estate which prevented the Council from further destroying the estate. Power to the People!

Ooh - heady days indeed - great little vid 👍🏽 Just one small point - what the film didn’t touch on was the council's dirty tricks, for example a strategy they tried at one point was- So as to evict the squatters 'legally' they had to show that the squatters were taking homes from legitimate tenants on the council's housing waiting lists - so on the day of evictions they would show up with people recruited from the local dole offices claiming that they were the legitimate tenant (on their waiting list) and that the squatters were denying them a home. What usually happened in these cases that once it was explained to the incoming person what was actually happening they would happily hand back the flat to the recently ‘evicted’ tenant. Claim to fame; I was a volunteer rooftop lookout (I wasn't living on the Pullens) We need more of these type of actions today more than ever! Corporate entities deciding which entrance you will access to get to your 'affordable' home - gimme a flippin' break!

Wow-blasted by the past! Happy daze indeed. Of course no socialists allowed as it was strictly an anarchist outfit (as I recall, that may have just applied for a short period...) Someone should do a documentary about the broader squat scene from the late 70s to the riots. And continuing to the 90s. In Lambeth there were other co-op squats in Clapham North, Kennington, Stockwell and Vauxhall (including Bonnington Square and Vauxhall Grove-big shout for number 6 Vauxhall Grove-which still had the front bay window I built for it in 1981 to start the project of making the place a wonderful place to live and create in. Before Thatcherism and monetary capitalism destroyed it all. Thanks Nick Clift for sharing, and I hope Jan Zalud is thriving. He was a good friend at art school and after.

Nothing would replace the Spirit of free and collective enterprise of Brixton - Like other cities/towns it should honor it cultural identity!! The preservation and a center piece of the fine CND mural"Nuclear Dawn" And why not A permanent and historic exhibition of the many artists-poets - musicians-dance and theater incentives and spin offs- A community center -Artists studios?? A Celebration and an Inspiration to Brixton the cultural Mecca it was and still is. Anna Lockwood.

This is a wonderfully creative and imaginative portrayal by our British sisters in the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom of our visionary fore mothers who advocated for peace in 1915. They organized to attend the conference of peace women in the Hague and to plead for negotiation and the end to WWI but were prevented from crossing the Channel. What a tribute to our 100th Anniversary this April 28 when peacewomen will again meet in the Hague and when pleas for mediation are still sorely needed!
