Awesome build! Once you get the cam/crank correlation correct it's still likely to sound lazy (low timing) at idle until you start adjusting the calibration. These very torque based ECMs will suck the timing way down until the torque table is corrected. I'd love to help with tuning it but I'm on the opposite coast 😂 Good Luck!

The 8-1, looks alot like a LS anyway. I'm surprised no one is using the truck engines more, the 6.6 or what ever, the gas option for 1 ton and maybe a bit larger trucks , not that familiar. I wish they would build a basically big block LS, a wider bore spacing, taller deck height, possibly a 1" taller deck a spacing to allow 4.250-4.560 bore and 4.300-4.750 stroke up to 604cid with direct injection and port injection, use the port injection for cold start enrichment. And full throttle high rpm. Build a SS-3500 with a big supercharger 10 speed transmission, 604 CID. 20" aluminum rims built to haul and pull toy trailers. Basically a ss454/typhoon style modern truck in dually and single. Making 855TQ and 760hp on 89 octane , and on E85 and the 😮WOW! Tune 990tq, 1100hp stock with tune and exhaust upgrade, and blower pulley, with factory dual 3.5" or 5" single single , stock exhaust. This would be an awesome truck no one could afford, it could also be a hybrid, with a 80-120kw motor in a transfer case like gear box on the transmission, or on the transfer case in 4x4 trucks with a 60 kwh battery between frame rails. With plug in charger and re gen and charge as driving , .5%-15% of the power goes to charging driver set> and Regen or when the brakes are tapped the Regen starts even when driving non ev. Also the motor and engine work together for just under 2000 TQ, about 1400 HP, with optional additional over/under drive in the transfer case, to get roughly 50% reduction and 20% additional over drive, of shift from 1:1 to +.20:1while driving just like a gear change , or change in each gear, making a 10 speed into a 20 speed, or just a 11speed. The 20 ratios works best during slow acceleration. Allow full speed good economy, with smooth gear changes. Similar to a variable ratio or CVT transmission, this is something gm should build! In 4500 also with pickup bed and 4-door . Sorry to dream and ramble!!

I really dont understand this engine swap. The factory engine makes almost 500hp, is all aluminum and capable of far greater power. I am not sure how much power this 8.1 is rated for but if its based on a factory crate engine it might make a little more power but will weigh more with the iron block. If you are going to stick a "big block" in there at least make it an all aluminum version capable of at least 700-800hp. If the big block makes any less power than that, you would have been better off just doing basic mods to the factory engine. Sticking a Vortec 4200 in there would be interesting but pretty boring and pointless. I am not sure that this 8.1 offers much.

I just can't get past all that work for 50 - 60 hp gain all while adding about 250lbs to the back of the car when you figure in the weight loss of iron vs. aluminum heads. The vortex 8100 stock is about 760 lbs. Vs. Roughly 427 lbs with the Lt2. Then you factor packaging issues and heat soak that comes with a huge chunk of iron, and it makes zero sense. But, to each his own. That being said, this is some next level ingenuity and dedication!

He didn't do this to be logical. Of course, it's gonna be heavier with the big block. He did this to show it can be done and be the first one to ever do it. And as far as the horsepower, it's a big block 8.1 L. I believe that works out to about 495 ci. It can easily produce a 800+ HP. I completely see what you're saying, but he obviously wasn't worried about that. You got to admit pretty cool project.

Huge project, but a major question to me is this - what's the point of dropping a huge truck 8.1L engine delivering just over 500HP when these days we have engines half of that size or less (see the one in the Alfa Giulia QR, a 2.9 twin turbo V6) delivering way more power? This new vette should see more powerful and sophisticated engines, not huge and slower ones burning 3 times the fuel...

I admire alot here but maybe nothing more than fighting that urge to throw wheels on and rip around the block. That's restraint that comes with age and expensive lessons. You gotta know the performance potential for the 8.1 may never reach that of the stock motor but I'm with you still on the "no replacement for displacement" theory that probably started this quest.

I wonder if this will be the TQ monster I think it will be? Any dyno#'s on the engine? I drove a u haul truck years ago with the 8.1L I was surprised with the power such a large truck had. Even loaded , even tho I'm used to the old pre90's trucks. A one ton truck with a 350 of the 70's smog era is like pouring water in cornflakes! Especially loaded. It will get you there, you may be a couple days late. But that. 8.1 in that vett should get you there and back in time to see yourself leave! Maybe in time to wake yourself in the morning so you can get a early start! I'd like to build a few engines some day, possibly a 7.0L LS7 block with 4.8 crank long rods . With a 4340 steel crank, and rods, it should be capable of 9500+ rpm make custom rods long enough to push the pistons out about .020-.030" possibly more , then mill them to clear the head and valves , no math involved they would possibly be .300"longer than original. Get scat to make a crank and rods use LS7 pistons , possibly reversed because the long rods will do what the offset pin did. Or not, the wall friction should be low. Possibly using a H-beam rod. With external oil pump. Even with stock heads it should make Good hp. Low end TQ may be not so great. Add a couple turbos with a air to water intercooler in the plenum similar to the ones used with superchargers. Using its own coolant system. With a 2gallon tank and radiator to operate closed loop or through the radiator. To allow the he use of ice. Maybe use methanol as a coolant and pack the radiator with dry ice. If the intake runner could see 24psi at 68°F it should be capable of insane power. It's more likely to see 168°F + . I have been wanting to do some testing with coatings. Ceramic insulation coatings on the intake and exhaust ports and combustion chamber. And possibly chrome plating the outside of the head around the intake port. Or possibly just ceramic coating the whole head and the piston domes. Keep the heat in the air not the metal components. It should allow much higher compression. I also thought about attempting to copper plate the water jackets of a iron engine block to prevent rust and possibly promote cooling. it could possibly add strength to the bore, especially with a heavy plate. About .090-.100" thick with copper or nickel plating. It could possibly allow over bores over 060" for engines like sbc. Maybe a .080" -.100" bore could be possible. I have heard of 283's being bored to 4.0" that's like .125". I'd definitely want to check the thickness before doing so. If someone had the equipment, they could bore the block out to install sleeves thicker than the bore. Then to assure a seal between the block and sleeve. Electroplate the water jackets. you probably need to have access to the equipment. Because paying a shop to do so. Would probably cost more than the project it's self. I saw a 5.3 bored and sleeved to a LS7 bore. Wild things are possible if you have the nerve and equipment! Sorry to ramble, have a awesome day,!

Dang, those rods are a sweet self made tool set. Wondering, what advantages does the big block have over newer engine architecture, to make it worth the swap in to a current car? Why now choose something like an SMX instead?
