Tune in to see what Pete Aardema and Kevin Braun are up to this week. Never a dull moment hanging around Mr. Aardema's shop. This weeks video provides an in-depth explanation from master engine designer builder Kevin Braun. These guys don't mess around when it comes to making horsepower and setting land speed records.

This is what real engineers look like. The so called "engineers" where I work can't even sharpen a drill bit!

This is the kind of thing that Harry Miller or Fred Offenhauser could do, and did a hundred years ago. Pete and Kevin have fancier tools, but the job is similar. Engineers tend to be more specialized these days, don't need to do this kind of ground-up work, and usually don't.

Such amazing work they are doing, I’m excited to hear it run. I would have thought the ends of the heads would be taller to incorporate the cam caps in to increase valve train stability.

@Greg Quirin Hi, It will be interesting to find out how heavy this V12 is. Given its build all out from forged 6061(?) aluminum with sleeve liners, seems like it will be on the heavy side. Not sure if they scaled this engine ?

for land speed racing, weight is not a issue, aerodynamic drag is a far bigger issue.

Have a look at how Steve Morris does heads for his SMX engines. They are machined from a solid block with pockets / cover plates / cross drillings for water flow. Blocks are made from a solid block too

Our heads on the model A, 3 liter, and V1200 were all machined from solid billet with cover plates and cooling holes drilled. We decided to machine them in pieces to make them lighter and improve the cooling.
