Hurting dirt biking? Or hurting dirt bike racing? The historic problem with 2-strokes is they tended to be so f'g loud as delivered that they got riding habitat closed down. That is the worst thing for dirt biking. Unmodified bikes like XRs, KLXs, TTs, etc not so much. Back in the 80s or thereabouts, the Four Stroke Nationals brought a lot of excitement to racing where 2 strokes had become a bit boring by comparison. I started riding MX 2 strokes in the 70s. Today my "dirt bike" is a KLX300. I think bikes like this (and the KLX300R) would be fine picks for most dirt riders who are on a budget. Not race bikes, but they are competent, will last, don't make a lot of noise, and are reasonably cheap. In my region they sell very well, especially the dual-purpose version. They leave a lot to desired in terms of performance when compared directly to machines that cost 50-100% more, but they are still available for those who are on a budget, or for those who are more concerned with having fun and building skill as opposed to just owning a faster bike.

I ride 4 strokes but even i can see how they suck ass. The cost being the biggest factor. Hell the 2 strokes are getting up there in cost too, What irritates me is we have these fancy ass dirtbikes that 97% of the polulation cant ride near its potential and the manufacturers are still pumping in BS technology into them. We dont need a fucking app for our bikes. We dont need launch control from the factory. And the bikes are heavier than they were 20years ao. All this tech, all these changes and the bikes arent even lighter. Hell my 04 rides better then my 22. Thats no joke!
@jamesadams23345 күн бұрын
In 1975 Bultaco dirt / trials / race bikes were not complicated, no fancy electrics, no radical intakes, no electric staters and air cooled and a 360 Pursang motocross bike stock was 206 lbs. We have NOT progressed. When I was 20 years old, EVERYBODY raced dirt bikes, the majority in my area being motocross. I had at least 50 friends and family race motocross and off road. Today the bikes are too complicated, too heavy, and above all, too expensive. Today I have 3 friends and family racing. I do Believe that the modern 4 stroke Dirt bike is to blame. They are too expensive for kids to afford and as soon as they break, they are tossed in the shed because they are too expensive to repair. The motorcycle industry was so busy "advancing" motorcycles that they forgot that their main rider contingent was poor / middle-income, blue-collar workers and not upper-class millionaires. They have literally designed bikes that have priced themselves out of the market.

The big "rage" right now is adventure bikes but again, there are so many electronics to keep them "current" that they are cost prohibitive to most new buyers. Also, the ages of the people buying are also climbing and the 70-year-olds still riding are looking for lighter, lower, smaller bikes that they don't have to struggle to ride. My current "adventure" bike is a 1973 Honda SL350 with a few mods that I wanted but none of them are electric. It's air cooled, drum brake, low seat height and almost 67 lbs lighter than the 300 Versys. It is not cutting edge, but it is easy to ride, will take me anywhere that a $30,000 BMW or KTM will take me, with normal maintenance, it will last forever, but most important it is fun to ride. If Honda re-introduced this model, without modern tech and a low-price tag, they would sell millions.

Dirt bikes are still relatively pretty cheap compared to many other sports. Look at the price of a Wakeboard boat at 125K. Now you are getting into more expensive sports. Or a bass boat at 70-100K. Don't need the feds to lower interest rates because if you are worried about financing play toys then you shouldn't be buying them to start with.

The 250F started the decline in my opinion. A family moves from the 85 class to 250 C and the bike blows up and they are done due to the price to rebuild. I know that half the manufactures still make some form of 125, it's not completive in the D or C classes unless they are super talented. It's becoming a rich mans sport and that's disheartening. The 450's are much more durable, but most people shouldn't be on one. In the 70's and 80's any family could get involved with the sport. Not so much anymore.
