I was a telco contractor for 15 yrs and now cable contractor for 3. I've always been baffled how someone can just start an ISP, figure out the logistics of putting their own lines in the air & ground, and somehow manage to get enough customers to sign up without going out of business soon after. I'm guessing the costs to lease space in the same easements as the big ISPs isn't cheap, or for the areas you run your own unique paths/vaults is also expensive cuz of doing locates, drilling, etc etc. I have no business sense, so I guess that's why I'm still just a lowly contractor. Wish I'd taken a different path in life lol.

good to see you out there cranking away - you should get a nice break from the sun and some much needed rain for a few days. always remember by installing fiber you are literally changing people's lives for the better and the impact for small biz is even greater! v positive work you are engaged in - you should get some interns and new hires (thoroughly vetted of course) and start having more people learn the skills - it sure ain't simple or easy but with enough reps. math and network skills pretty much anybody can learn how to do it, they have to want to of course and believe in the mission. think about starting up a referral system if you don't have one already - people will jump on board and word of mouth/unconventional sales can work wonders. when you have time please do an update on wifi plans/protocols/repeaters etc

I love how PON is so flexible in that you can put the optical splitter wherever in the cable plant it makes sense. Furthermore I love how you take advantage of that, unlike the telcos who insist on making everything the same everywhere, resulting in installs that sometimes don't make sense or which put big distribution boxes where they otherwise wouldn't be needed.

I hate it when I splice that the cleaver is not precise and I have to cut it again or bubbles on the splice and I have to redo again making my fiber wires uneven in length.

Always double check everything, it takes less time than redoing it all 😂 For identification i always mark them when they are still twisted, 1 and 2 normally are the color coded ones and the rest of them are white. When they are all color coded you just need to mark which side does your signal come. With time you'll get all colors and their sequence, I've created a jingle to sing the sequence while I was learning, works pretty well!

Do you have gravel placed below the pit? I always get about half a foot of gravel dropped into the bottom of the hole before we place the pit which seems to help with the water. Also i put about half a foot of gravel into the bottom of the pit to catch gunk before it blocks the drainage holes.

nice to be able to use your own fiber for most of that. Back in the mid to late 90's I had to rely Bell/Verizon and Connectiv for all my ds3 and t1 to connect all my pop's in the 3 counties which would turn into a multi company shouting match anytime an outage would occur.

When I did campus network design, I specified a 1 inch hole in the box bottom. A box rep once told me the potential problem with a closed bottom box is that near a road the water can become hazmat due to road oil runoff. I used to specify open bottom over gravel, but contractors would skip the gravel and I'd get a box full of sand here in Florida.
