I have been in and out of North Dakota, from 1971-1975; 1978-1979; 2012-2019; and finally from 2021-now. It is time for me to move on too. I have accomplished so much here though. I earned a B.A., B.S., and a Doctoral degree all from UND in Grand Forks. It has been one of the nicer places I've lived.

Where are you living in ND? I have lived in Grand Forks for a total of 15 years from 1971-75, 78-80, 2012-2019, and 2021-2022. It has changed a lot since the early 70s. I was always involved in all of the Multicultural activities for Black students as well as other students of color. I have many White friends too. I especially liked meeting and learning about all of the foreign students and their cultures. ND is not as crowded as many other places so it is much friendlier in general. I do not think that any city in ND is good for young Black children because often they are the only ones in a class and that is too stressful for young children.

This woman is a blithering asshole. Looking for red herrings. Why is it she fled to a white neighborhood? Could it be life in a black neighborhood is less attractive? Don't want to live in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brownsville, East N.Y. S. Bronx, S. Chicago, Watts? Me either.

N. Dakota has nothing but ppl of color. Most are white. Buy a box of crayons, white's in there. Put all the various light spectrums together & low & behold you get white. So white is the color of universality. Why in the world are you so wrapped up in color distinction? Why don't you just take ppl on as they are instead of concerning yourself with color? Shame on you! You are the problem.

How refreshing girl! It’s exactly the same when whites are in more black areas. I’m glad you feel welcomed here. We are all really the same except whites typically are less concerned about skin color and sexual orientation than blacks.

This was so interesting to me. First of all, there's a giraffe in the room, not an elephant. But anyway, the way you describe trying to find people to connect with is exactly the way it is for most of us trying to connect with people when going somewhere new or with people we don't know. Except for one difference.... i'm white and most of the people I'm around are white and so race isn't one of the variables. But white people don't look at other white people and think Oh we have a shared experience! It's more like uh oh, extreme hesitancy, like I hope this dude isn't a jerk or whatever. It's not easy, people are complex animals. I get that being a POC in the midst of all whiteness would be an added issue that is probably impossible to ignore. It's a semi-weird situation for a white person too, me for instance, in that oh hey here's a POC, I should make sure they feel comfortable and know I'm not a racist because these days we keep hearing we're racists even when we don't believe we are. It's confusing, it's an added layer of anxiety, truthfully it's kind of a pain in the ass to have to deal with, but on the other hand most of us want all the races to blend and be smooth together. I mean literally blend, like the races need to intermix and then within a few generations we'll ALL be people of color and race can become a non-issue. Because really we as humans DO have a shared experience, lots of shared experiences.

Are you still there Sis? I am a Speech Language Pathologist and considering taking a school position in either Grand Forks or Fargo. I stopped in Fargo and Minot while relocating from Boston to Alaska in 2019 and was a bit enamored by it. I have lived all over the States and in Sweden. I've also traveled in West Africa. What I have learned is that racism is EVERYwhere...it just comes in different flavors lol

You ROCK!!!! I’m a white girl and way back when in 1988 I moved to New Jersey from Houston. I was born and raised in Louisiana so my southern accent was HEAVY! Some people couldn’t understand me and I was actually looked at and was said to, “You’re not from around here are you.?” The white northeast people do NOT like white people from the south. AND all my food (cornmeal, black eyed peas, Steen’s ribbon cane syrup, etc.) was considered ETHNIC and TWICE the price!!!! One place (run by white folks) even gave me an IQ test as part of the interviewing process!!! I already had my college degree!!! Racist???? Much!!!!! Can’t stand the northeast. The one gal in the company that I eventually worked for and got along with was a black gal from North Carolina. They thought North Carolina was southern. LOL We clicked cause we were raised in the church and had a “southern” Momma connection.

Where did you end up? Are you doing well? What town/cities did you live in when you were in ND? What faith communities where you a part of? We are looking at moving to ND. we are in Portland Oregon now, prior to that, the Silicon Valley in California so hearing you came from a city out of state makes me think it was from a more densely populated area. Are there any things you think we should be aware of? Things that might take adjustment to people from bigger areas. Thanks for your videos, Dana.

What's a person of color? Isn't white a color? Buy a box of crayons; you'll find a white one in there. Why do u even refer to color? U approach a black woman simply because she is black. Why not a white person? You want to b treated like everybody else, but gravitate to black people. U need to examine yourself. You remind me of the McCarthy era. Only now it is "are u now, or have you ever been a racist" try color blindness. It's great. U obviously don't realize that u, madame r indeed a racist. I'm a 65 yr. old white guy n have many friends of all shades, but we don't harp on that.
