Welcome to my Bollywood Feminist Film Series! In this series, I highlight and provide an analysis on films that focus on women's issues / the LGBTQ+ community.
In this video, I discuss the brilliance of Bulbbul. A 2020 Bollywood film written and directed by Anvita Dutt, starring Tripti Dimri.
Bulbbul is set against the backdrop of the 1880s Bengal Presidency and follows the life of a child-bride and her journey.
My analysis focuses on various aspects of the film that I found significant, so feel free to comment below and let me know your takeaways from this iconic film 🔽

The four men in Bulbul's Life are windows of different men in the society Mahendra : who perceive women are pleasure and amusement Thakur boshai: who perceive the women are thier property and symbol of their honour. Satya : who is a feminist only and until women are doing what is expected of them. Sudeep : a true feminist and value women as an individual but are called "simps" or "jhoru ka Ghulam" by the society.

A lot of people think that Bulbul loved Satya but I think she only sought to find a friend in the unfamiliar world she was thrust into. The relationship between them is not of love but forced emotional dependency because there was no one else for Bulbul to talk to her age as a child other than Satya

Some Points that I had noticed : 1)Young Bulbbul stepping foot into Her New Home after Marriage - Her alta-covered Footprints were shown as Larger than Her Little Feet ; which meant that She had More Responsibilities than that warranted by Her Young Age. 2)Bulbbul also punishes Binodini - by taking away all the Colours and beautiful accessories that showed off Her Status. All that Binodini wanted and held dear, were stripped away. 3)Satya toys with Bulbbul - He attempts to control Her Life, but is Never Bold Enough to Admit or atleast Hint what He felt for Her. 4)Bulbbul's Wardrobe Change in 5 Years - She went from Pastel Colours, to very Vibrant, eye-catchy colours. It Indicates that She No Longer intended to 'Keep Quiet' and be hidden in Her Husband's Home. 5)'Fell down the Stairs' is a Phrase that was used to cover up the Injuries of Women in that Village - figuratively, it meant to stop the Ascent.

6)Lastly - NO, the Moon does Not influence the Cycles. It is just a Myth, that defies Basic Gravity. The Moon influences the Tides, only because of the Ocean's Huge Mass, and the Water being exposed. A Human is, but a literal speck, compared to the Ocean - so we do Not get influenced to the micro-level in the Human Body. Besides, the Fluids in Our Body are closed and Not exposed like Ocean Water. The Moon has an Aesthetic Factor that has Always appeased the Artistic Sense of Humans - but that's as far as the 'Influence' is concerned. The Movie Bulbbul has served complete justice to that Aesthetic, and You have Narrated it Beautifully ❤️

when binodini is telling bulbul to keep quiet after the violence that occurred the night before she keeps repeating one thing: "he may be a little insane but he's a zamindar/ he may be a little insane but he'll be okay after marriage/ he might be a little insane but you'll get jewellery and silks and honour/" and I feel this was something that was told to binodini before she got married (to the neuro atypical brother) and it is something she hands down to bulbul since this patriarchal culture that pits women against each other taught binodini to also propagate the things that were taught to her and this cycle continues

loved the analysis of the film, since I myself enjoyed it deeply. one thing I noticed is the symbolism of Kali Maa, who is of course incredibly significant in bengal, where the film is set. on one hand, she is a demon who must be contained, on the other hand, she is a goddess who essentially is mother nature. the preserver of time. we see bulbbul (well, the chudail) being referred to constantly as, well, a chudail by men and binodini, basically everyone who oppresses her. but, the little girl she saved is the only one who calls her a goddess, saying she saw maa kali. bulbbul killed all those wrong-doers, and obviously the people and the men who supported them and were symbols of oppression themselves objected to these killing, but the pure and innocent heart of the small girl who could've been molested by someone who had so much more power than her saw a goddess, not a demon. that was truly such a beautiful scene, where bulbbul embraced the little girl. just my two cents :)

This was a far better description of the movie than the famous channel called Haunting Tube. Maybe because the channel owner is a guy, or maybe because he does these reviews as a source of income and doesn't truly try to understand them, he wasn't able to understand even 10% of the movie. He called the storyline weak and the movie a bit bland, but worth watching once. Whatever his reasons, I feel only women can understand the horrors of patriarchy truly because men have only benefitted from it. Only we can understand the most subtle ways how society, including men, women, outsiders and even family tries to oppress women and it is so normalised that no one even bats an eye at it, just like Satya had nothing to say even when Bulbul clearly expressed that Master Dinkar was brutally abusing his wife.

i think Binodini's character is the most misunderstood character in Bulbbul. Binodini is not the woman that is manipulating the men here. Men dont need that pull from women to control women (trust me this come from experience, if its not her its something else.), instead binodini just seeks help of the little power that she thinks she has but doesnt. u have to listen to the director talk and watch the movie again to understand all the undertones and minute details spread throughout. the iconic punchline that bulbul throws at binodini comes out totally different after understanding the characters. many miss this point when talking about symbolism in bulbbul, there is a symbolism of birds in the movie. from her earings, her fan, many dialogues about birds and the last trees burning scene. I suggest you to listen to the podcast done by the swaddle with anvita dutt talking about bulbbul and its characters.

Interesting outlook, but two things can be true at once. Those who are victims of patriarchy can perpetuate it as well.

Binodini's character is a victim of patriarchy but she is also a gatekeeper of it. Binodini basically uses the patriarchy to make way for herself. She was married to a mentally retarded man so she tried to grab whatever little she could with it. All she wanted was the oldest brother to love her. She tried to instigate hate in his mind against Bulbbul so she could have his undivided attention. That was her way of survival. But after she got widowed, she tried to force her way back. In a subtle way she would often remind Bulbbul that she was a woman and hence her rights were less than the men of the house. In a way Binodini was trying to assertain her authority through the men. It annoyed her to see that the young and once naive Bulbbul now has so much control. She must have felt defeated to see how easy it was to become a matriarch while she wasted almost her entire life trying to manipulate the men. There was also the jealousy factor regarding beauty. Binodini was dark skinned, older. Bulbbul was young, fair skinned. She hated her for being the pretty one. Such women are everywhere. They try to sabotage other women's lives by scheming and minpulating, and eventually stripping away everything they had. Binodini was many things but certainly never innocent.

Bulbbul is also very similar to the character dynamic of Draupadi in Mahabharata. In the epic Draupadi is married to 5 brothers. She is however only attracted to Arjun. The oldest brother of the five gambles her away in a game of dice and to everyone's horror she is stripped naked in the court of assembly by their wicked cousin Duryodhana. The only MAN who cared for her was Lord Krishna. He protected her in that moment and later orchastrated the great war to avenge her. Satya was similar to Arjun in some ways, a grave disappointment to women. This kind of man is always charming and super caring, but only until it entertains them. They seldom feel anything for women. To them women are a mere prize- the more you possess, the greater you feel. Dr. Sudeep was like Lord Krishna. He didnt lust for Bulbbul, rather made her feel secure with his presence. He didn't try to "protect" her. Instead he remained behind the curtain and helped her find her purpose. He supported her and always treated her as an equal. This is why their relationship was not that of romance, it was a healthy platonic friendship. Most men would say "ah, friendzone" but that's because every such man only wants to get in a woman's pants. They seldom see women as people. Their minds are too clouded with lust. Any man who's reading this, know that the women who have male best friends (the ones who never hit on them), those dudes will always hold the highest place in their lives. Lord Krishna and Draupadi were friends. They were never romantically involved, this is why Draupadi saw him as God.

I don't understand how people can be ok with these children being married, it's barbaric. Something that I cannot even begin to grasp as something that truly happens so often and to so many in India.

this movie had an intense impact on me. Even the spiritual aspect when Kali Maa is mentioned killing the pedos (the tub scene with the girl witnessing the murder of the foul man) . I am a devotee of Kali maa and a survivor of childhood sexual assault so this movie means so much to me.

Also, I really like how the film represented a character like Binodoni. She isn’t proud of or happy for Bulbul for gaining her freedom, and tries to ‘put her in her place’, like when she’s sitting on the steps enjoying herself. Bulbul doesn’t forgive Binodoni or leave her unpunished. And yet, there’s a complexity with her. She loved Bulbul’s husband for the same reason Bulbul loves Satya: they needed someone to be there for them less bad than their husbands. She is abandoned by her family and forced to accept her abuse. She takes care of Bulbul after the assault but tries to convince her to be quiet about it, yet you know she doesn’t really have a choice. She has a choice to be a better person, or at least be kinder to Bulbul, but she doesn’t contain it, and Bulbul doesn’t forgive her for it. Yet, bulbul, as well as we, know she’s a victim who was made by her situation, so Bulbul lets her live

Satya's efforts to threaten Bulbbul and take her life decision(that she must be sent back) on her behalf is misogyny but how is him being jealous of the doctor that (as pointed out at 4:10 )? What else will one feel if a person they love, now is happier in the company of someone else? Even Bulbbul felt uneasy (and perhaps jealous) when the possibility of Satya's marriage was discussed.
@poulomi__hari
@poulomi__hari Жыл бұрын
Jealousy is endearing. But repraminding her in a deragatory way, like telling her how to cover her head and keep away from strangers is triggering. You see when Satya's marriage was being discussed, she never told him to not talk to women or wear decent clothes or act modestly. The policing of women is unncessary and thus a wonderful example mysoginy that is taken so casually, that even after pointing out, most people are blind to it.
