One question about fuses is that if a battery has it own BMS capable of 100A or 200A what is the purpose of so big fuses?

Hi, thank you for sharing and making clear some points. I could be wrong on the battery capacity sizing your formula would not be: 6500 wh+(6500 wh*0.8* 1.25), 80%?

Thanks for the great video. Practical question. I have 2x 20a mppt i want to connect them to a 250ah battery. How should I practically do that? Connect both mppt's to the battery-poles? Or first bring them together, and then with one set of wires to the battery?

Really great overview! Generally efficiency and idle consumption should be taken into account. Often the manufacturerers are not very honest with the specs esp. on idle/stand-by consumption! Some hybrid inverters take energy from the grid when idle - which is not acceptable imho!

I've been off grid now for over 5 years, and built my entire system myself, including all upgrades. This is such a classic example of a video made by someone that knows all the theory but has none of the practical life experience to actually help people make the right decisions before beginning. Sure, there is plenty of information here, but practical application of that information is a whole different story.

What 'right decisions' do you need before beginning? This IS the right information before beginning 😉

Just use the max size cable the controller can take... that way if you add solar in the future you should be OK...

are you sure to wire the panels in series? Doesn't it add up to the voltage?
@cleversolarpower12 сағат бұрын
Yes, series adds up the voltage. Total voltage input= Voc* panels in series*1.25 this is still within the 150v max input limit of the charge controller.

I noticed you didn't use the C-rate in your calculations for your battery capacity. Is there a reason???
@cleversolarpower9 сағат бұрын
The C rate of a 12V 200Ah battery is 100A or 200A if you use the plus version. Let's say we use the 100A BMS version. 800W/12V=67A. So it's below the max discharge current. I didn't include it here to make it less complicated.

What about 24v or 48volt systems? with a 3000watt invertor powering a standard household fridge/ freezer?
@grahamjohnson4702Күн бұрын
I think you are over estimating as a fridge freeze does not operate 24 hours 7 days a week.
@cleversolarpower9 сағат бұрын
Sure, you can use 24 or 48V. I prefer higher voltage batteries because of the benefits they offer. I have several other videos discussing these.
@cleversolarpower9 сағат бұрын
Indeed. I multiply the power consumption by 8 hours. So if the fridge is 100W I multiply by 8 hours to get 800Wh. I made a video about how much power my fridge consumes. It's quite a popular video.

Indeed, but how reliable are they? If you have this as a backup system then sure, but if you are in a camper or boat it has to be reliable. Don't want to be in the middle of the ocean and have an electronic failure.

You are correct. However, low frequency inverters can run a larger surge loads than high frequency inverters. We always size for surge loads.

Thank you very much for this eye-opening review. But apart from inverter idle power consumption, don't you think that charge controllers ~ especially MPPT,~ consume power from the batteries too? So, the charge controller energy consumption should be taken into consideration ,
@user-lk2gq1vh5e2 күн бұрын
Kindly verify this, most of the charge controllers extract power from the batteries to operate and power their fans.
@cleversolarpower2 күн бұрын
That will be very minimal. Around 1-2W.
@user-lk2gq1vh5e7 сағат бұрын
Let's do the maths, 2w x 24h = 48w/daily. In my opinion, 48w is big enough and shouldn't be ignored.

@deadgamer9808Күн бұрын
@@cleversolarpower yes but i think its also due to lots of indian companies manufacture low frequency inverters and they are not importing it nor they are making them ( maybe because they have to set up new plant for it also they have to discontinue their existing plants which will be not be good for business) and the one who are importing them are charging premium

i have a 2013 chevy volt which i put 2x 100w flexible solar panels on. they feed directly into the 12v system which imo is the most efficient way to do it. almost all EV's have about a 200-500watt loss through the 12v system when turned on, mostly to run the big beefy high voltage contactors, lights, infotainment, ect. they just go straight through a PWM charge controller for now, im pretty sure at low voltages a pwm is actually more efficient since the voltages are already at the right value. I added a 4kwh lifepo4 battery, which normally would be a bad idea. it has a little 15w heater and thermostat wired directly in to keep it above freezing, and no BMS, just an active balancer. the chevy volt is one of the only cars that uses a high voltage battery to start its engine so no need to worry about starter surge current. the volt doesnt do a good job of matching the lifepo4 battery since it looks like a floating lead acid most of the time, which is actually a feature. the solar panels keep the lifepo4 topped up and avoid the ~15% loss from stepping down from high voltage to low voltage (350v high voltage battery to 12v system) this being said, they only add about 4 miles of range per day (unless i drive much longer and start using up the lifepo4 battery which is rare). the thing is, the volt normally gets about 30mpg, and that's equal to about 8kwh. so by saving about 800watts per day= 0.13gal gas saved = $0.54 in my area. the solar panels cost 70$ and paid for themselves in about 4 months. now theyre just free and keep saving me gas.

Is that the required battery sizes if you run the inverter at max power? If your load is only say 200A (a fridge and some lights) you won't place a big draw on the battery, mostly inverter on idle.

Excellent video on the difference between high and low frequency inverters. Low frequency make a much better choice for real world use.
@curtchase37305 күн бұрын
One reason the low freq inverter is "better" for heavy inductive loads is that the big heavy power transformer, being a huge ball of wire, is nearly indestructible from a short overload. If the device trying to start ( ie: air conditioner, table saw, freezer, etc.) approaches the output limit of the inverter, a voltage sag will be the result and a trip condition may result. A hi freq inverter, when subjected to a similar load, will try it's hardest to fight off the surge and make the device happy while actually failing and blowing up all it's MOSFETS trying! No different than vacuum tube circuits VS transistor counter parts!

Can you use a bigger inverter if you add more batteries in parallel
@cleversolarpower4 күн бұрын
Adding more batteries in parallel solves the C rate. However, you will still have a high current in the system, which will lead to expensive wiring. Check my video: 12V, 24V or 48V battery systems.
