Would a mini lathe be sufficient for making small projects like this beads and other small turning projects I want to get a lathe and since I’ve never even done it before, I thought best to learn on a mini. I don’t wanna get a super cheap one but not super expensive either until I know that I like it and then I’ll graduate to something bigger and better

A mini lathe would probably work for this, but just make sure it can handle a drill chuck in the drive side. I'm not too familiar with the minis, but do have a smaller back-up Jet 1221 which also works great. I would probably steer away from a pen making lathe, although it may be able to get the job done, I don't know that they are meant for the load of a diamond painting pen (I could be wrong). I'd personally suggest something similar in size and power to the Rikon 70-105 to start out. That would give plenty of room to work, accept any needed accessories, have the power to turn any small project, and give a little room to grow from pens if you decide.

Queria te perguntar se posso colocar uma serra tão fina na dewalt? Obrigada 😊
@kevinskreations
@kevinskreations 11 ай бұрын
¡Hola!

How do you know where to make the indents (for your fingers to hold)
@kevinskreations
@kevinskreations 11 ай бұрын
There is no set standard, and there are many different grip styles. Unless there is a specific request, I vary the placement depending on the look of the blank. Sometimes I have a different placement on either end because some prefer having a different grip when using different placers. If you diamond paint yourself, take note to where you want to naturally hold the pen. If you do not yourself, check out some videos of people that are diamond painting, and watch their hands. I hope that helps 🙂

Looks like 320/400/10001500/2000/2500/2500/8000/10000 and the NOVUS polishes. Could one just use then NOVUS polishes, skip the sandpaper? Or NOVUS does not remove those large of scratches? Crazy good.
@kevinskreations
@kevinskreations Жыл бұрын
Thanks! and you are correct in the sandpaper regiment. I do skip the 8,000 and 10,000 occasionally with good results, but the polishes won't get out the initial scratches you usually end up with.

Hi Angel! We are set up in Etsy, and we do take custom requests like this. Just to keep all our requests in one place, could you shoot me a message through the Etsy messenger? This is a link to the shop: kevinskreationstore.etsy.com/ My wife does almost all my resin work, so she will work with you to get a blank you like then I'll turn it with any specs you give me.

Can I ask what grit you are using? I'm new to this but bought a lathe and I'm in it to win it 🤣🤣
@kevinskreations
@kevinskreations Жыл бұрын
Hi Tuxgirl 213! I need to make another video because the quality is really bad in this one, and my process has changed in the last year. I'll let you know what I use in my process now. To start, I use 80 to 150 grit if there are really rough spots (usually happen when the tools aren't the sharpest). Use the 80 grit with a gentle touch or you will actually make grooves that are tougher to get out than the rough spots in the wood. Once the rough spots are out, I move to 220, 320, and 400 grits dry sanding. I keep the speed anywhere from 1200 to 1500 rpm during the dry sand. When I move to the wet sand, I keep with 400 to start, then move to 800, 1200, and occasionally depending on the wood, 2000. For the wet sanding, I bump up the speed to 1500 to 1800. Between the grits, I use a paper towel to dry the pen. Be careful not to burn yourself though. It gets hot quick. I have also incorporated Yorkshire Grit as well, which is truly a game changer (I was a big time cynic before trying it myself). The Yorkshire grit can serve as a finish as well because of the beeswax it contains, or you can strip it off and use a finish of your choice. If you plan to do resin pens, I put this other video out that has a break down of that process as well: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/b8yGfqt-3J_ec6s.html . Good luck in your new venture! I find the lathe very relaxing once you get the hang of it. Just keep your wits about you and don't get too relaxed... just like most shop tools, the lathe knows how to wake you up, and it's methods usually aren't pleasant 😉
