What are the two lights you have? It may just be the camera perspective, but it does look like you ride quite close to the parked cars? Number one fear for me is having a car door suddenly open in front of me, so I tend to leave as wide a gap as practically possible. I do have a rear mirror on my RH grip which I find a great safety feature for riding in traffic.
@BikeDispatch13 күн бұрын
Half of my daily commute is in full darkness so I really need quite a bit of lighting. I have two lights in front, one is a Cateye and the other is a very bright LED that runs off of 2s lipo battery. In the rear I have a constant Cateye on the seatpost and a constant LED light on the back of my helmet for elevational awareness. During daylight I tend to use flashing lights. The Gopro makes it look a lot faster than what it feels in real life. I'm quite risk adverse and tend to ride the same roads every day working out quirks and features of each section. Car doors suddenly opening is a common issue for me as well as people just stepping out into the road to get to their car door. I always try and maintain distance with cars even though it doesn't look or feel like it in the video! Thanks for your comment and stay safe out there!

Your commuting videos shows prime example of why there should be safe main arterial bike paths in and around auckland, not many people like to risk getting to work and home on busy streets on bikes, perhaps you should invite the transport minister and the high cats at AT for a commute ride some day and see if still have the same opion after the commute lol
@BikeDispatch15 күн бұрын
Totally agree with you, and riding along with the Transport Minister in Newmarket and Manukau Rd- 3:30pm rush hour instead of the Lightpath would make a great video!

That’s my light. It’s more like a spotlight though. Grunty and very quick to switch between high and low beam. Designed for mountain bike trails I think but great for winter commuting.

Beautiful video. I noticed that you've run 2 or 3 red lights, may I ask you why did you that? Aren't you putting your life at risk? Just curious
@BikeDispatch5 ай бұрын
Thanks😀I do boost through some red light crossings. Usually pedestrian sections where I’ll give way to the pedestrians then go. Imo taking off at traffic lights in the pole position is one of the riskiest moments in bike commuting, so I try to get ahead of primary traffic flows. I wait out the bigger ones. 😀

Hi - I did this ride today, from Onehunga. Great ride! I did a slight modification by going via Laurence Stevens Dr and the Hangar Access Rd, which was a bit quieter, and avoids the need to cross the road before the bridge - plus you get up close to the myriad of private jets on the executive ramp. Encountered no dogs near the stream where you indicated, but did see one in Williams Park. I'm not a fan of stray dogs - have you ever had any issues with them?
@BikeDispatch6 ай бұрын
That’s a good tip, navigating that airport section using Hanger Access Rd👍I’ll check that out. 🚴♀️ I’ve had a few stray dog encounters lately but only territorial barking. I learnt a few tips and strategies of this dude’s channel to leverage dog encounters- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdaXi7pmtNalhYU.htmlsi=yvnY_QIz9HGQMhMC Thanks for your comment😀

Blimey. 😳The bridge end of Coronation Rd was re-sealed in mid 2022, and it’s already deteriorating. You can see it at the start if the ride. There could be a bigger plan or temporary conditions for cheap road sealing but ideally the job should just be done properly from the start. I usually resort to riding on the smoother footpath. 😳

Hillsborough is aptly named, there's a bunch of really steep streets around there. Just about run out of gears going up Hendry Ave on my road bike... It has really made me consider changing my setup to get some lower gears, or just to get myself an e-bike. Good to see it can handle a hill like that.

Great video showing what bike commuting is like in Auckland. Just curious why you chose this route instead of taking the Waterview path to the Northwestern path and avoid those busy roads almost entirely? Is it much quicker this way? Some typical Auckland drivers in this vid aye.

Good feedback. Sometimes yes. The traffic lights on my route that I tend to boost are pedestrian priority ones and I find in NZ it’s safer to get ahead of heavy traffic lines a bit than all heading off at the same time. I’ve had a lot of near-misses in that scenario. Two things though, I like to give way to pedestrians and I try to always keep left of traffic lanes 😀🚴♀️
@Evan250xxx9 ай бұрын
That was a wonderful bike commute bike. However, I've seen that you've run red lights a few times and I wonder why would you do that? You're putting risk yourself and themselves
@BikeDispatch6 ай бұрын
Yes, sometimes I do. Busted🤣 My defence would be defensive driving. Just trying to stay ahead of long car commuting lines and reluctance to ride off at traffic lights next to giant SUVs and buses. I always give way to pedestrians though. 😀
