Thabks for the great tips on this topic, highly useful. I wonder if you managed to measure the shaft diameter, and the outer diameter of the nylon gear? As well as the number of teeth and the length of the gear. This way, we can source for replacement gears somewhere.

Hi Chris, thank you for the video! Very informative! 👍 I have the whole D3 lineup: D3, D3s, D3x, and D700. I enjoy them all (although D3x is probably my least favourite of the series). A couple of things in a D3/D3s that make a practical difference (vs D700): * D700 doesn’t have a dedicated bracketing button: I have to sacrifice one of the customizable buttons on a D700 * D3/D3s have assignable PV and FN buttons with unusual features. - For example, you can make button+wheel switch between crop modes - which includes 8x10 shading. I don’t shoot in 8x10 as I prefer to crop in post; however it is super helpful to check the composition that it looks good in 8x10. I do it all the time and it is a split second on a D3/D3s: compose, button+wheel to check 8x10 and go back to full frame to take the shot. - Second button+wheel customization is switching between shooting banks. Incredibly useful when need to switch between manual and AutoISO, or when want to switch picture control profiles, or you want to store photos in different folders (think covering 2 different games at the same time. So, same idea: a quick button+wheel and you switched between colour and B&W, or manual and AutoISO - or anything else in the shooting menu banks. * D3/D3s have a vertical exposure grid on the right hand side of a viewfinder - and it is a wide range of values. I use easy exposure compensation all the time, and having this large exposure dial is super helpful * lastly, D3/D3s are larger/wider/deeper than a D700. I only noticed it when I was wearing gloves - the usage of Pv and Fn buttons is more comfortable with D3/D3s * on a flip side, a D700 has a viewfinder grid Contrary to many people who praise D700 colours, I do not see much difference between colours from D3/D700/D3s - all are perfect (to me). But everything comes down to preferences and what we like: I use D3 more often than all my other cameras combined. Just happens this way. 🤷🏻‍♂️

That's an awesome amount of Nikon! Thanks for the break down, yeah I figured in terms of ergonomics the D3 series would be a more flexible machine than the D700. Hi Chris, I have a D700, which I love and since I wanted a second similar and perhaps better body for telephoto lenses, I went for the D3S. But I have to say that they are cameras and especially the sensor, which give completely different results. To put it in two words, the RAWs from the D700 are really pure raw without cooking but the RAWs from the D3S look already edited. In principle there is a big difference in the white balance, the D700 is rather cold and the D3S quite hot. Then, on the D700 there is a world of room for editing thanks to the "softness", "creaminess" and wide tonal range captured by the sensor. In the D3S there are stronger colors and high contrast and therefore an edition does not have much margin. In the D700 there is a very faithful reproduction of what your eyes saw. In the D3S there is a reinterpretation that, as I already wrote, compared to the D700 it is as if "someone" had already edited the photo or saves you the editing work. As a quick conclusion, with the D700 you can imitate the D3S in editing but not vice versa. I think that here are some of the key reasons why the D700 is one of the cameras most valued by its users and one of the reasons that is causing its price to skyrocket. I don't have tons of equipment but I have read many users who have dozens of equipment, even the latest mirrorless ones and still value and work with their D700. Something similar happens with the D200 and its CCD sensor that you also value positively and camera that I hope to try soon. Thank you so much.

@9:05 Yes, I use it, there are some JPEG profiles that do not fully replicate in PP from the RAW, thus it is easier to have one of each - then there are times when you know you only want the RAW, or the JPEG and so swap back to save the space on the card (only 32G on mine). Should it be on a button? Probably not. It could just as well be in My Menu.

Pardon me for being somewhat critical of this video. What is helpful for is to have more sample images of what you are describing and to have them on screen for longer periods of time. You can still narrate while they are on screen. Also some of the images being compared were under different lighting conditions. Sunlight hitting the subject while the other image was in shade makes it difficult to objectively compare the two. Otherwise, thanks for the video.

I mean the blue just seems like a difference in WB accuracy. However in my experience with the CCD sensors is they just tend to have a smoother gradient from black to white. You also have to remember we’re not seeing a completely raw image. The camera manufacturers runs it through their processor and interprets the colors as they see fit. Nikon probably didn’t change their color science that much between these two cameras. I’m sure if you had the same sensor in a Sony A dslr or a canon dslr you’d see some differences but just because the manufacturers process the raw data differently. Also I know the d200 says “36 bit color depth” in the specs. I don’t know if that was just a marketing scheme by counting each color channel bit depth and adding them together or not. I know most cameras today say 12, 14 or 16 bit so idk if the d200 was just a 12 bit rgb and they just claimed 36 bit?
@Mr50mmish
@Mr50mmish 8 күн бұрын
I am not sure if it would be a WB accuracy issue as both WB and tint were adjusted to match unless you mean the WB tweaks internally are different which I would interpret as differences in color science as they developed their sensor tech. You are right though when you look at 2 different cameras with the same sensor more prominent color science differences come out. This is very much the case with the Nikon D80 vs Sony A100 vs Pentax (don't remember the model number) But yeah the 36 bit think from Nikon comes from 3x 12 bit channels. I mean the math checks out haha. So not inaccurate, just the way it's normally presented. But that did bring up a point noted by someone else. The D600 does 14 bits per color output so I might need to see if I can noticed a difference when switch it into 12 bits. Either way it's a fun look at the differences. I'll probably see if I can snag a d2x down the line to compare the 2 and just work around the pixel pitch difference.

It's very similar. Generally the differences in color science are probably the biggest factors, I find Sony processes the colors pretty differently even with the same lens. The images from the Sony tend to come out a bit cooler even when you match the WB and tints. When it comes to high iso, at the time the A100 was out its noise performance was not as good as the Nikon when it gets to 800-1600. Otherwise when it comes to detail output both perform the same, lenses not withstanding. I will likely do a closer look at this later as it's an interesting topic!

Its not as good as the a100, ask me how i know lol. I sold it and went back to my Minolta 7d because thats better than the a100 and a390 (i still have my a100 tho cause its still good) Its better mainly because the 6.1mp sensor really performs much better, i can shoot at 1600 iso all day on the 7d and it doesn't lose much detail at all.....my favorite thing about the a mount system is you can get zeiss glass and slap it on old ccd cameras and it just works.

@@JayTsTechI agree the under 10 megapixel CCD sensors perform better

I have the A 100 but only seem to find old Minolta zoom lenses for it. They are heavy and slow. But I have since gotten a few Nikon D70 D100 which I like for better controls and feel and the use of the old F mount lens. The Canon 30 D are OK, larger and use modern Canon EF mount. All these were less than $90. but batteries lens and memory are extra. I think these are the best to replicate film cameras experience, as the do not have previews you aim and focus in the finder and you get a review no videos.

Yeah I find when I'm out locally there are lots of poo zooms, but I do find online there are plenty of nice primes!

This pairs nicely with my D700. I got the D200 with less than 4K shutter counts and in mint condition.

Honestly, I've thought about doing something similar with my mamiya press since I have an H4D-50. I didn't know that someone actually did it. I'll definitely be following your video as a guide. I think the H6D would be the perfect candidate for this combo, if money wasn't an issue, since it has live view.

Nice! Yeah if you have any questions let me know! The most annoying part was manually cutting the steel prongs that hold the digital back to the mounting plate. Yeah live view would be pretty helpful with this projects, one day I will get a newer digital back with live view to make these projects easier!

S3 Pro still have another prong for detecting Program and Shutter Priority mode capability of the lenses in other word a way to tell if the lens is capable for aperture adjusting via camera so it's not capable for supporting non-AI lenses. In term of ergonomics, I like Fuji S3 Pro more than Nikon D200 and this is one of the most well ergonomics camera I have ever touch, maybe it's just my personal preference but I like it. Another point is due to S3 Pro using older film camera as a base, it should be compatible with older D-TTL system with flash like SB-28DX, SB-50DX and SB-80DX thogh newer flash is backward compatible with D-TTL, the same can't be said for Nikon D2H and newer camera including Fuji S5 Pro as they use i-TTL like modern camera so they're not compatible with those flash anymore.
