After driving it I understand why it was set up this way. As you accelerate you pull back to upshift which flows with the natural forces of acceleration, likewise when you are braking and downshifting you push forward with the flow of decelerating forces. At the end of the day I would prefer a 3 pedal box but America doesn't get that.

@@brandonbelanger_Official That's part of my problem. I'm coming from a manual transmission car. In fact, this is the first automatic I've owned in 20 years and back then they were all standard PRNDL shifters which made sense to me because that's what we grew up with. But I'm struggling with this setup. I have to look at the shifter each time I get in because my brain wants to do the opposite. It's not the end of the world and I know I'll soon get used to it, but I still question it. I understand your comparison to upshifting and accelerating or downshifting to decelerate but I'm not doing either. I'm starting from a standstill and simply selecting whether to move forward or backward. To me the intuitive way to do this is to push the gear selector in the direction that I want to go. Forward for forward and backward for backward. But as I suggested in the original question, I'm probably the only unicorn who thinks this way. 🤷

I had an MX-5 before my BMW 2 series coupe and I thought I would use the paddles to manually shift, but after a while I realised that I was more comfortable in D mode and when I wanted to do sporty driving just putting it in sport mode and that's it. It even detects if you are cornering hard and holds the gear, and that even in Comfort mode... pretty awesome and good engineering going on here.

Might be a technical error in the parts or computer of the system if it has happened for this long. If having sync or smart connection is a must you could evaluate the idea of replacing the car all together.

I'll have to see what you mean in the engine bay with the piping, I do know there are hollow stubs that extend off the main intake pipes for what I am not sure.
