I never even thought about money in wanting to be a cop. Even though cops should be paid more, you get the most fulfillment out of serving and making a difference. Same goes for military.

What state are you in? In California departments academy pay is way higher than what you’re paid as an actual officer. That is crazy. Base pay here at most departments starts at 120k before overtime.

Wrong!!! Police don’t go after criminals, they troll streets and neighborhoods handing out petty tickets for window tint, sleeping in a parked car, dim tag light. They harass homeless people and treat the public with disdain. They love to slam women and children to the ground because they’re not cooperating with unlawful demands. You want to improve public perception? Start honoring your oath to protect people’s rights and serve the community instead of preying on unarmed citizens.

I feel like there are two major problems with policing in America which make me question the good I would be able to accomplish as an officer and prevent the police from being an institution that I would consider working with. The first is that I feel like there is too much low level corruption or politics that police answer to. Whether I ultimately answer to a power tripping sheriff or a power tripping mayor, I feel like I would end up being a lackey/goon of some guy who may or may not be moral, and I would just get fired or find myself in serious legal trouble if I attempted to do what was ethical and right in a situation, while if I just fall in line and do whatever they want me to do, then I'll be shielded from pretty much any repercussions, no matter how immoral the acts I committed, unless it made sense to throw me to the wolves for political reasons, at which point I would be cast aside like a discarded tool. It's that distrust in the overall integrity of the system and its leadership which makes it most unattractive to me. If I'm expected to go give out BS tickets then lie in court about it because the town is low on funds and the mayor doesn't have the spine to levy the taxes needed, then that's just what I would be expected to do. To me that's not doing good. The second issue is one that isn't the fault of the police but is a major societal issue overall, which is that the police are used as a "catch all" and asked to respond to just about everything under the sun, often without any expertise or training on the situations in which they are called to intervene. Rather than create and fund institutions to deal with problems, governments find it cheaper and easier to just ignore the problem, and let the police deal with it. Why should the police be the ones dealing with a suicidal person on the edge of a bridge or handing out parking tickets. It makes pretty much zero sense to have those be police duties. The first because they are not experts in mental wellness, and many cops I've seen aren't even particularly good at deescalating even normal situations, so asking them to handle some guy who wants to jump off a bridge is unfair to the officers as well as not ideal for the suicidal person. The second because a cop driving around handing out parking tickets is overkill. Some cities have separated the two, but still. I feel like if I were to be a police officer I would be expected to intervene and deal with a bunch of situations in which I have absolutely no expertise and no business handling simply because local and state political leaders don't want to knuckle up and tackle and fund those problems because it might mean having to increase local sales tax by a tenth of a percent so they won't get re-elected.

As long as there is a war on drugs, good people will not be willing to become police because good people are not willing to ruin someone's life over drug possession. End prohibition if you want to attract good people to be police.

@@WhatLCSays - Outlawing ANY drug only makes that drug worse, even with dangerous drugs like alcohol, nicotine, and meth. The polygraph with no scientific basis to back it up, the unrealistic squeaky clean past history barrier for people with life experience, the culture of old heads not wanting change because “it has always been done that way,” the militaristic nature of training in some spots, the low starting pay that only attracts people out of high school not someone who needs to support a family, the stigma of therapy in some places, the perceived right wing culture of policing that leaves even centrists out, and of course the risk of being jailed for honest mistakes and scrutiny by the public. I know you don’t think bonuses are needed but the starting around me in 37k. Housing is 2k just for an apartment and inflation is an issue. The higher up I speak with tell me that the kids out of the academy are rude and have no applicable life experience. I’m not saying let in criminals in, but the standards are sometimes insane for people who may have been otherwise great individuals and care about upholding the law.
@WhatLCSays
@WhatLCSays 3 ай бұрын
although some are department dependent, the reasons you stated are all valid reasons for the decline in police recruits. $37K is what our department's starting pay was 17-20 years ago.

Question: It's my understanding that the Constitution isn't really taught in the police academy. I think it is fundamental that it should be taught - after all don't they take an oath to the Constitution? Also there seems to be a us-versus-them mentality. So these two things are vital and I think need to be addressed in the academy. What are your thoughts and how do you think this can be implemented? Remember the Constitution says: We the People.

Its all in who you know. I did not get on with any department I tried for years. If it were not for the Undersheriff growing up in the same neighborhood as my mother I would have never gotten offer. All it took was meeting the sheriff and his poor attitude and I walked out on the same day I was hired. Don't think its all going to be peaches and cream, it not. What I have seen for years is many who did get hired were the same kids I saw in school and they were the type that got picked on all the time. When this type gets hired and for many it tends to go to their head and they end up doing dumb things that get them fired or in one case put in prison (PEDO). I live right outside and Army base that supplies the local LE agencies with new recruits, these tend to be the first they hire. Why ? Because the agency heads know these officers are newly discharged from the military and that these recruits will just end up getting their LE credentials here in my state and then transfer back to their home states for LE jobs there. So its beneficial for the departments in my town to hire them since the recruits won't be here long and the local LE agencies don't have to contribute or pay out a retirement.

3.5 yrs of service, starting salary 47k to now 62k base pay w/ ot I make $90k. Originally, I wanted to be a captain, but I changed my mind I rather go to the paperwork side as a Police Team Manager. I just retired from the Army reserves and started receiving my VA benefits. So it's no need for overtime. I rather work 8-4 M-F and enjoy time with my kids since I have extra revenue. I'm still in my 30s. I'll be eligible for retirement again sooner than I thought with my active duty military buy back program. The next move is case worker
