Some of these "instruction" videos really are very hard to watch especially considering whoever posted them is setting themselves up to be experienced and knowlegeable. Did anyone notice the way the reserve pilot chute played around in the burble of the main pilot chute before it finally pulled out the reserve ??? What do you think would have happened if they got tangled up together ??? The answer, in case you havent already got there before I type this is that the chap on the film would almost certainly be in the process of making his last skydive. Can anyone who does me the favour of reading this suggest an alternative approach to this very very basic problem ??
@dediver
@dediver Жыл бұрын
No, there's no alternative approach that wouldn't include huge downsides itself. The reserve PC here wasn't really trapped into the burble (also: It was not a burble caused by the main PC but a burble caused by the Skydiver itself). I've seen (and experienced) much worse hesitations of spring loaded pilot chutes. Whenever you launch a spring loaded PC vom a belly position, you'll never now what will happen. Most of the times the PC will launch pretty fast. I some cases it will dance around into the burble and in some rare cases the hesitation lasts for a couple of seconds. Decades ago, Relative Workshop (today known as UPT) introduced the balloon reserve PC. They claimed that it would perform much better in these situations. I'm not sure. I've also seen hesitations of these pilot chutes. Additionally, other people claimed that this special construction would come with it own problems, namely a reduced drag that could (!) result in hesitations in low speed cutaways (which are much more common than high speed malfunctions). So, dealing with a large burble caused of a belly flying skydiver is not an easy task for gear manufacturers. As soon as you solve one problem, you can create another problem. So, alternatively, what could the Skydiver do in this situation? He could lean a little bit to the side to reduce the burble - in this case, you never know, if the main PC would be also released - so, you could create another problem. Skydiving is a risky activity. In my opinion, the goal should be to prevent pc in tow malfunctions and/or horshoe malfunctions as follows: - Always pull in a good, stable body position. Practice stable pulls and a good release of the main pc. - Double check, if the main PC was properly cocked. - Be sure that your gear is in good shape. Wear and tear especially of the following components is critical: Main pc, kill line, bridle, main-pin and loop. - Be sure that the bridle is routed properly. - Be sure that the main PC is packed well (no hard pull, no excess bridle coming undone)

If you have a hard pull, or rather no pull, do NOT cut away your main. There is a strong possibility that your pilot chute will still not come out of the pocket in which case you will be under your reserve with your main flapping about literally doing God knows what. Tangling your reserve lines and brakes, partially inflating, could be anything. You may well end up with a very large nightmare on your hands that you can do nothing about.
@25sunbeam
@25sunbeam Жыл бұрын
How is cutting away with your PC still in its pocket going to result in your main flapping around? I agree that cutting away is not the best EP in this scenario, for a number of reasons… 1) if wastes time, which is important at terminal 2) if your reserve blows-up then you are out of options if you’ve cut away. If your main is still connected then you at leases have a chance of getting your main out and having something above your head. I know someone who is alive today because they didn’t cut away from a total.
@admiralbenbow5083
@admiralbenbow5083 Жыл бұрын
@@25sunbeam If you cannot get your PC out of the pocket by hand there is every likelyhood that no amount of drag from your d bag or whatever shape your main ends up in if it comes out of the d bag will pull your PC out either so you will end up trailing a big mess behind you. If that mess is flapping around above your head you may open your reserve into it. If not you might end up trailing a partly inflated main. If avoiding a potentially fatal accident doesnt make sense then think of it as a time and cost issue. If cutting away your main does in fact somehow yank your PC out of the pocket then you may spend the next few hours or days combing the countryside looking for your kit. If you dont find it you will be buying some more. Golden rule. If there is nothing out dont cut away.

@@admiralbenbow5083 I still don’t understand how you’re expecting the main deployment bag to come out of the container if you don’t pull the main PC. @admiralbenbow5083
@admiralbenbow5083 Жыл бұрын
@@25sunbeam That idea came from you. Are you really incapable of comprehending that your pilot chute is attached to your main and will probably remain stuck in the little pocket at the base of your rig when you cut away, or is that a step too far for you?? Your muddle headed stupidity no doubt extends to the rest of your participation in this sport if indeed you have ever jumped a all. As such you are a danger to yourself and by extension those around you. I do not want to be on your next load.

was the whole chute supposed to come out when he pulled the cord? I notice that some skydivers release the pilot chute straight after exit of the craft and have it trailing for the whole freefall? and then they pull the chord again and the trailing pilot chute helps drag the chute out and open. What is happening here in this video? Thanks.
@stopspinskydiving
@stopspinskydiving 6 жыл бұрын
You're thinking of a tandem jump where the Tandem instructor deploys a drogue chute during freefall. The purpose of this is to slow the tandem pair to a speed as if they were just a single jumper. A single jumper doesn't throw a pilot chute until deployment time. In a perfect jump of a single jumper, which almost all are, when the pilot chute is pitched, it grabs good, clean air and is pulled upward, pulling the bridle from the bridle cover on the side of the rig. When the bridle has reached line length, it pulls the closing pin from the closing loop. 4 flaps open and the deployment bag, which is connected to the bridle lifts out of the container as the bridle continues line length. The lines that are stowed on the deployment bag begin to pop out of the stowes as the d bag continues line length. Once all the stowes are released, the d bag is pulled off the canopy or from the other direction if you wanna look at it that way, the canopy is pulled from the d bag. The lines that were stowed are connected to the canopy on one end and the risers on the other. The risers pull out of the container by releasing either tuck tabs or magnetic covers. Air fills the nose cells of the canopy and the canopy begins to inflate. All this happens, to a perfectly flying canopy, within 3-5 seconds in a perfect world. In this case, when the pilot chute was pitched, it done it's job, but something was causing the closing pin not to be able to be pulled from the closing loop, resulting in a pilot chute in tow.

Pilot chute in tow is potentially fatal. If the reserves pilot chute or free bag gets tangled with TH we pilot chute the only option is to roll on your back and pull the reserve out . This assumes you have altitude to do this. It is much safer to open high to allow a margin, and pull the bridle , open the closing pin manually , and or wiggle the d bag out of the container and then pull the cutaway if the deployment is bad.

Watched a seminar with John Leblanc at the BPA expo a few weeks ago. He showed us a video of trying to get both the main and the reserve pilot chute to interact with each other whilst simultaneously deploying both. Try as they might PD couldn't get an interaction, over dozens of jumps. John even said it began to annoy him how he couldn't get anything to happen. It's chopping away 2 out that causes issues. As for pulling the pin manually by the bridal well - this can only work if your pilot chute isn't cocked and generating enough force to begin the deployment sequence. If a cocked PC isn't pulling the pin with it's 70+ lbs of force then your arm behind your back definitely will not. Don't waste time messing about, just pull the reserve.
