Welcome back everyone to the third week of our Cotton Drifting Festival event! In the last episode, we went through and talked about everything in all of Higurashi Gou, such as, Onidamashi-hen, Watadamash-hen, Tataridamash-hen, and Nekodamashi-hen, and Satokowashi-hen. Today we will be looking at the original series made by Studio Deen, the visual novel, and Umineko No Naku Koro Ni to attempt to connect the two series. The goal is to explain Lambdadelta, Featherine Augustus Aurora, and Bernkastel, as well as how Higurashi connects to both Umineko and Ciconia. So with that being said, join me today as we attempt to understand the truth behind all the new loops of Hinamizawa with Rena Ryuugu, Keiichi Maebara, Mion Sonozaki, Shion Sonozaki, Rika Furude, and Satoko Houjou.

Higurashi Gou and Higurashi Sotsu probably connect to Umineko, but who in the fragments knows if it'll happen? Ryukishi07 is a smart man that tries to bring together the When They Cry series, with titles like Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni, Umineko No Naku Koro Ni, and Ciconia No Naku Koro Ni - but who knows if they all connect. Mother's Basement asks Should you watch Higurashi When They Cry, and personally I think that's a great idea. The openings for the series created by Asaka and Ayane are very enjoyable, especially Analogy for Higurashi Sotsu.
Higurashi Sotsu has some interesting reactions for the full episodes, and I really enjoyed seeing what happened with Rina. Although I promise Umineko isn't that long, and we will discover Who is Frederica Bernkastel.

Honestly, the marketing method worked. I read all of umineko in less than a month because of gou and it became my favorite vn of all time. I'm a huge when they cry fan now. Ryukishi, you're a legend.

I still want Sotsu to be a tie-in to When They Cry universe (Umineko and Ciconia) more than just some Easter Eggs. Some people think this new Higurashi is an unnecessary sequel to an already perfect series (debatable). Being a tie-in to When They Cry universe can make Gou/Sotsu even more relevant.

The problem is a lot of fans were looking at this through a bias lens after they discovered it was not a remake and expecting a connection. I have been flagging the alarm all over KZfaq and Twitter at the cost of being called a troll by the hardcore believers. I get that, and I understand their rage when they find out that this might be a marketing scheme. Their might not be much of us OG fans left, (not even the creator of this video is) but to me/us GOU and Sotsu are setting up to be the ending we never got in the original, let's just hope we finally get some closure to one of the greatest standalone anime ever.

@@gravityfallscanada I will be disappointed if the connection turn out to be nothing more than just vague easter eggs that leaves us for another 10 years to debate whether Higurashi is connect to other franchise or not since Saikoroshi. To my personal opinion, i dont think Matsuribayashi is the perfect ending for Higurashi franchise (no, not even Saikoroshi) and Gou/Sotsu is there to fill that void i feel for over 10 years. What i love about Higurashi are mystery, gore and tragedy of mistrust, miscommunication, not government conspiracy, military complex, shonen superheroes story. Satoko is an ultimate villain of Higurashi that fit all the aspects i like about Higurashi. But hey, that’s just my personal reference. To be off-topic, it’s refreshing to see your not-repetitive comments like you always do. Your comments are like Higurashi Gou. I have to open my eyes to spot the difference in your each repetitive comments, feel like i live in the loops or something. Lolololol

Honestly, i almost feel that this has been a harmful sequel to what was a pretty perfect original series. The idea of it isn’t the worst thing. A bit unnecessary, but it could certainly work. The execution and approach has left me mixed. I think it needs just to be good and not worrying about tying into the wider franchise. Though it can certainly do that as well.

So the thing is I’m still being openminded to interpreting this series. It’s possible Satoko becomes lambdadelta, Satoko is controlled by lambdadelta, her other self is separated from Satoko to become lambdadelta or she receives the title of lambdadelta to become another lambdadelta just like how there are multiple Beatrice in Umineko. It’s also possible that Takano and Satoko’s experiences are combined into one vessel to become lambdadelta. Or the most disconnected theory is that Satoko becomes her own witch form so there’s Bernkastel, lambdadelta and her

Whatever Ryukishi's plans and intentions are, I really hope Sotsu somehow leads into an Umineko anime story. It's Ryukishi's magnum opus and more people experiencing it would be amazing..

Issue is Umineko relies a lot more on the small details than Higurashi does. Things that appear small and meaningless that would easily get cut in a normal anime adaptation have massive ramifications in Umineko. In Umineko the details matter and you could easily fill an entire 26 minute episode with just two people talking to one another. A PROPER Umineko adaptation would need AT LEAST a cour per VN episode. That would be an 8 cour anime, so imagine all of Higurashi 2006 and Kai and then double that. And I said at least 8 cours, an Umineko anime done properly could easily be LOGH in length.

JJAB91 True. Sometime something that appear useless the first time you play ends up being a clue to understand the whole plot. Some character development are also hidden within dialogue which look like normal chit chat.

I mean they are already connected in the sense that Fetherine presumably wrote both Higurashi and the latter umineko forgeries (where she fanfiction style inserted versions of her own characters into the story). I really doubt Ryukishi will connect them beyond that, though

The logic error is Lambdadeltas existence. She is Eua's opponent. She was the one that gave Takano the certainty power. Takano was the one that made Rika loop into Bern. Eua got bored and slept. Rika manages to defeat Takano. Eua wakes up thanks to things spicing up. Satoko meets Eua and traps Rika into another loop. Satoko starts to become Lambdadelta. Satoko becomes Lambdadelta,they defeat Eua somehow. Satoko,now Lambdadelta meets young Takano and grants her the certainty power. The loop starts with another Rika.

@@LupinaCatto Lambda looks like Takano because Satoko admired her so much she decided to take on Miyoko's shape, thereby making her very image immortal and granting her wish to become a God even when the Higurashi gameboard ended in both Takano and Satoko/Eua's defeat. Lambda likes happy endings and she ALWAYS keeps her promises to her Miko even if she has to deceive them or put them through the ringer so that they struggle hard enough for their wish to come true which was already certain to happen anyway (I genuinely don't think she was lying to Rena about creating a world where she can be happy). It's because Satoko's life was nothing but misery and struggling to stay alive by feigning responsibility and being self-sufficient (since her brother was gone and nobody else in the village took care of her except Rika and they hated being so codependent on the other), and once she became a looper she was able to transcend her suffering by rejecting any world or piece she didn't like. Her uncle could even become a person who could actually help her and treat her properly (though this is ironically described as a miracle). And she didn't have to rely on Rika only to be abandoned by her at St. Lucia either. She even says to Rika she loves her looping powers because she never has to be hurt again or face any consequences for hurting others (like when she killed her parents or pushed Keiichi off the bridge or was nothing more than a burden to Satoshi and Shion or killed Rika so many times over). It's safe to assume that this is the reason she granted the wish of Shkanony*sutrice, because she reminded her of Takano who reminded her of herself. Also because all good blondes are Witches, hehe~

I figured that Higurashi is the story that shows the making of Berkestel and Lambda. Plus in season 3 of Higurashi, Rika calls herself "The witch Berkestel" on episode 4 I believe. And in the visual novel for Umineko, Lambda says some pie Riddle that Kaiichi had said to Satico before to which Berkestel replied with something regarding Lambda falling for that riddle in the past. So I figured that the Higurashi series is leading to the making of Berkestel and Lambda, we just need a logic error to happen.

Going along with the theory that Bern and Lambda will be split from Rika and Satoko, I've seen some theories that say that the sword fragment will do this. It's supposed to kill loopers, so if there are two version of Rika - the looper and the base - then the theory is that if she used the sword on herself, it wouldn't actually kill her but instead remove the looper from the base. Perhaps, for some reason, Rika will use the sword on Satoko and then herself. The looper halves of them will be separated and eventually become the witches Lambda and Bern, while the Rika and Satoko will reset in a new fragment and given the opportunity to live their lives as normal human girls (potentially with no memory of the loops).

@@rand0md00d3 Can someone explain some of those theories? I mean, I can see the looping girls ultimately becoming witches, but how it conects with ciconia? Isnt this story all about a futuristic war? I know that some characters have the same face, but there is actually things to conect ciconia to the rest? (Like Featherine talking about her horn defect in umineko and pretty much everything in sotso/gou?)

@@douglashenrique188 on gou, eua mentions having met satoko in a world with a red sea, and also mentions spinal cord LD-3105 and vier For all I know, the red sea is a reference to ciconia, and there's a plot about simulations and spinal cord used for experimenting on humans (also a character with a strong resemblance to takano is called vier) So people speculate umineko and higurashi are simulations on the world of ciconia (and lambadelta, takano and satoko are based off vier/jestress)

Another neat easter egg/connection: in Yakusamashi-hen, the extra arc added in the Higurashi Kai anime, when Satoko get hospitalized, her room is 3-4. Considering that this arc was created under request (think even supervision) of Ryuukishi and Umineko would come out not long after, I wouldn't be surprised if it was intentional. That said, I believe what really could connect more directly Higurashi and Umineko is Ciconia. I won't go in details to avoid big spoilers, but I'll just say: same brains, different simulations. Who knows should be able to figure out where I'm trying to go. Further evidence is what Eua said at the beginning of ep 21 of Gou. However, there's something I think MANY in the community seems to get confused on: witches in Higurashi and Umineko are NOT the same. In the sense, witches in Umineko are powerful reality bender beings who play their games in the meta-world. Witches in Higurashi however, as implied by Rika in Saikoroshi, is just a term to describe a person who stop caring about the world and people they are in, because that's not the world they care for. In a way, Satoko now is more of a witch than Rika ever was, since she clearly won't care about the worlds she will destroy for her goals. Hence why I say that people make a mistake in thinking that Saikoroshi-hen is when Rika separated from the voyager witch Bernkastel we see in Umineko. What Rika did there is simply burying her cold self, the Higurashi witch Bernkastel in herself. When the voyager witch of miracles Frederica Bernkastel really was born, I don't believe we have yet seen it. Although Sotsu MIGHT give us the answer.

Also in regard of Ryuukishi leaving everything up to interpretation, it's not always true. Even Umineko, it's true that the VN leave the readers the mistery to figure out, but it's not the case for the manga which WAS approved by Ryuukishi to give the readers who "wanted to open the box" the solution to the misteries.

I think you're absolutely right with how the references were set up throughout the series. It's really clever and the best marketing tactic ever. Regardless of how Sotsu ends, Ryukishi07 is a genius with how he set up his franchise that makes me want to dive into it more. Absolute genius mad lad. Also, glad you're doing better man and taking the time to make content still. Dope stuff as always and can't wait to see more of it in the future!

Congrats on finally releasing this video! I like how you even delved into the series' fandom status and all in this. The idea of Rika using the sword on Eua never crossed my mind until you mentioned it and now I wonder what'll happen if it does end up being the case. And haha using the image of the time-travelling detective when talking about solving a mystery is a nice touch. This is a fun video to watch. Thanks for your hard work!

I'm glad you acknowledged how smart Higurashi Gou/Sotsu is in terms of getting word out there about the overall franchise. There's a certain subset of fans that believe the whole "pretending to be a remake" thing was a mistake or something they shouldn't have done, when, no, the fact that they did that is one of the biggest reasons the show blew up so much and became so talked about! There were so many old-time fans running around panicking about newer fans getting "spoiled" by it, but spoilers mean nothing if no one new is checking out your things in the first place. Ryukishi has already spoken several times that he feels the experience of going through his works and thinking about them is more important than who "gets the answers right" regarding the mysteries. There are so many new fans entering the franchise now because of Gou/Sotsu who are greatly enjoying the ride, and many of them are also going back and looking at the older Higurashi things, and Umineko & Ciconia too. There's no need to disrespect them because they "didn't start in the right place."

Ciconia needs to be complete first. But I do hope the success of Higurashi Gou and Sotsu prompt a proper remake of Umineko or even original content

I mean, if you really wanna get into connections, you need to have good knowledge of Ciconia as well. There are a lot of theories about this, once you read or even research enough about Ciconia, there are many theories about the nature of the WTC universe. Gou/Sotsu feels like it might be the "putting the lid on" Higurashi (at least for the time being). There's a possibility that if Umineko does get an anime remake, that it won't follow the VN, and be a remake somewhat like Gou/Sotsu. I heard Ryukishi has said if he were to work a bit more on something new of Umineko, he might go deeper into Kinzo's wife, a character barely even mentioned. But I think his main focus in the future after that will be Ciconia. I really don't think he's going to come back to Higurashi or Umineko after Gou/Sotsu, and the (possible) Umineko remake (which is by no means guaranteed to happen btw) for awhile, I mean, I don't know him, so I could be wrong but Ciconia feels big, and he felt the need to slow its release due to a real life pandemic. He really can be a master troll sometimes, so I could easily be stone dumb to assume any of these things.

By the way, the references in Higurashi Gou to Ciconia are key to a theory some of us share about a possible non-magical interpretation of the WTC series. Perhaps the catbox was simply defined into existence?

I also think Beatrice is one of Lambdadelta's pieces. I believe it was confirmed in the manga that Beatrice, in a magic sense, got her endless powers from Lambda. AN ASS TON OF UMINEKO SPOILERS AHEAD: Sayo Yasuda, the most generally agreed upon identity of Beatrice, also has references to Lambda. Sayo can, just like Satoko and Miyo, be pronounced as 34. I believe that this can answer the question of why Lambda chose to fight together with Battler, Beato and Ange at the end of Episode 8 of Umineko. Since Sayo was Lambda's piece, by letting her win, she technically won over Bern.

My theory is that Gou/Sotsu is Featherine's fan-fic ending to Higurashi: at the end of Matsuribayashi, Ryukishi07 tells people that they can create their own endings to it because he can't be sure it is the best ending for everyone. Since Gou/Sotsu itself was made by someone else, besides his rough outline, it fits that desire and I think (not) Featherine being in it shows that it's "her ending". Regardless, it's at least Ryukishi07's own official fan-fic ending for Higurashi, lol.

You say there will never be any very obvious connections between the two series that will be blatant and in the open. I assume you haven't read Umineko Saku's Last Note of the Golden Witch, which is kinda supposed to be an "episode 9" and takes place after episode 8? There's an, uh, aggressively blatant connection made near the very end. It's not a reference, it's not an implication, it's not something for the viewer to infer and deduce, it quite literally is Bernkastel explicitly saying, crystal clear "When I was in Higurashi (...)" Admittedly though, it is a very meta scene, so even if the blatant connection is there, it doesn't necessarily mean it will be expanded upon in other works as part of the internal lore and instead the series will continue making simple references here and there like it's always done without actually connecting all WTCs outright.

That seems similar to the scene where Bernkastel says to Lambda that she can spoil the culprit of Higurashi but Lambda tells her not to because she hasn't finished reading it. I think what she meant by that is either she already knows who it is but doesn't want the audience to realize that yet or she's actually reading it by watching the Hinamizawa fragments the same way Satoko did and hasn't gotten to the point where Takano is revealed as the culprit. Though that to me has begged the question about whether Satoko actually even saw the Minagoroshi fragment because even if she did deceive the club in the Tataridamashi/akashi Fragments it was their choice to go to Child Protective Services like they did in Mina and she had nothing to do with that. Also if she did see Mina then I don't think she would have behaved the way she did toward Rika for most of GouSotsu as she would've known Rika didn't really abandon her and even be privy to her being a looper/Witch (although she would still be very annoyed that Rika didn't bother to tell her since even in Matsuribayashi Hanyuu calls her out for concealing the truth from Satoko and Satoko felt like Rika wasn't being a good friend not telling her about Akasaka before he came to her house). So did Eua slip in another fragment instead of Mina where Takano was revealed as the culprit, perhaps Yakusamashi from Deen which covers the Tsumihoroboshi TIPS or even Miotsukushi from PS2 where Satoko confronts Takano as her "potential future"? That would mean only Lambda got to see the Mina fragment when she was witnessing Takano's exploits she had sponsored in all of the Fragments connected to the very first one where she met and decided to sponsor her. And this was only long after Lambda had completely split from Satoko and become her own person (or Witch).

Gonna be honest, I want as little tie-ins to the rest of WTC as possible. Gou and Sotsu should be able to stand on it's own, and there are already plenty of people that view Higurashi exclusively through the lens of how it relates to Umineko, and not as it's own standalone story.

Can I say that I don't need to seeing or not seeing an official connection between Higurashi, Umineko or the others 07th expansion works? I mean, I'm one of the people that went crazy screaming "OMG EUA IS HER !! AAAH!" ... But! Even if Ryukishi won't confirm this or other connections I will still love to going around screaming that they have links between one another xD Is just too much fun. I agree with you idea about Lambda. Satoko acting like her is just ... Too good ~ Piece, manifestation or whatever. Lambda-Satoko, Bern-Rika, are all great characters, some of many in the franchise of course. And Ryukishi is an absolute genius of mystery and he's a liar so he will probably deceive us all for all eternity (｡･ω･｡)ﾉ♡

I don't think Lambda bestowed her certainty powers upon Satoko, nor do I think she is her piece. The one that bestowed the looper powers was Eua/Featherine. The huge amount of similarities between Satoko and Lambdadelta and the fact that Ryukishi has stated that Satoko has met Eua before and called her by that name, makes me believe they are the same entity.

I even have the crazy idea of a time paradox where sotsu created Lambda who granted the wish to Takano which set the creation of Bern under Hanyuus influence in motion although this happened before Satoko became a looper. This paradox might be the logic error which also is said to have created Bern. I also don't think Hanyuu is Featherine. Hanyuu might be a piece from Featherine/Eua which failed since Hanyuu was killed in her past. In like to think of Hanyuu and Eua as of Bern and Erika, in which Erika also reached the rank of a witch. But then there is this alien backstory of Hanyuu which is either not cannon or the attachments of horns are a crucial hint. Hanyuus horns are attached/grown to the skull while Eua and Featherine just have a hornshaped floating device. The hairstyle of Ouka reminded me somehow of Eua and although hornless she had the demon powers. Maybe something went wrong down the line and she became Eua with the medal being a sign of her achievements and regarding Hanyuu as a failure as her mother. But I like the alien stuff being fiction more than cannon. There is also the possibility that Hanyuu and Eua are like the two Beatos in EP 6 of Umineko and by becoming one form Featherine. No matter what, Ryukshi07 surely caught us in a catbox of endless speculation.

There’s a lot of common stuff from re zero I find with the adaptation I don’t see how you don’t think the creator is correlating the two series Higurashi is what leads us to Umineko the witches are from the loops of Higurashi and featherine gave lambadelta & Bern a new board or new timeline a closed space to play with each other a way to still exist

By the way the character design is because ryukishi07 tends to think of his characters as "actors on a stage" even after he finishes writing the story he doesn't think that to role of the characters are over as said in a certain interview. So your theory is kinda true , However ryukishi never tends to shy away from the truth , the one truth is already known in umineko , in one way or another there should be a mutual trust between the author and the reader ( a theme constantly repeated in umineko ) so i think he will reveal the truth sooner or later but in an ambiguous way ( like ep7 with will and claire duel which didn't give direct answers but more of "key answers" those who solved the mystery will be satisfied , those who didn't are left confused )

@@MrHunteru it's not entirely wrong you got the marketing strategy bit right i think , but in my humble and completely flawed opinion based on conversations ryukishi07 had (a little unreliable) and my observations around higurashi and umineko themes , i think it's a marketing strategy , but also something more than that , so you don't have to feel that you were "wrong" if the truth was revealed , you were still partially ( or maybe totally if the " connection " theory was wrong ) correct , after all the strategy worked.

I mean, when something like Eua dropping Vier's name happens I can't really look at it as "just a refference". And now with Phase 2 preview it seems like we know what Red Sea might mean... so yeah. Besides, Higu, Umi and Cico are all part of the same universe. The very same series, for some reason. So, similairites between those can be hardly compared to how Ciconia Okonogi is similiar to RGD Okonogi. I can buy that RGD Okonogi is there just for funs, but come on, there has to be a reason for those refferences within the very same series, within the same universe. Of course, we'll never see Battler in Hinamizawa or Ooishi's AC in A3W (too advanced technology for them) or have any supergeniuses on Rokkenjima, but that does not mean all this stuff can't happen in the same universe, with the same Sea of Fragments (and higher beings... like, you know, those "Voyager Witches" or something) connecting them. I don't see a sigle reason why that would not be the case, and there are some to believe it is, even if those aren't that solid for the most part. Also it's just funny to me how Umineko is the most detached from the rest of WTC so far.

Great video, I have a theory. I believe bernkastle is a witch already in higurashi kai.I base this on the scenes from the manga and anime where an adult that looks like rika visits a young takano asking if she wants to live or die. this character is credited as Bernkastle. Rika also refers to bernkastle as a witch a few times through out the story. I do think gou/sotsu is a continuation of the ending of umineko because of the dialogue about Lamb and Bern about torturing one. But time is so funny through out the series so it could be as you said the origin of bern's full ascension to witchood ( like how Beatrice and Ange went through various stages of being a witch).

i remember when i read tea party for episode 2 and 3 that lambadelta is currently the player of higurashi gameboard after bernkastel already finished it. bernkastel also mentioned that she won over lambadelta due to endurance contest. >lambadelta is currently the player >satoko is currently the player >satoko wants endurance contest until rika give up and stays in hinamizawa >bern won from endurance contest? it was more vague when you read umineko and just umineko only. yet, it will make sense if you watch gou and sotsu. in the end, this is just my opinion. feel free to correct me if i wrong

Nice but that marketing in BD sales seems not to be working (Hardly around 105 copies per volume) XD yeah, here in America in MAL we've seen an increase but is likely that most of all of that new members watched or read Higu or Umi trough piracy. At least directly for 7th expansion seems to be working though

Nice video, even if I don't completely agree with things. BTW, there's a mention of "Frederika Bernkastel" in one of extra chapters of Umineko, and interviews mention stuff about Featherine and Hanyuu almost by name, even if not directly told exactly "what".

If you love Higurashi then you're definitely gonna love Umineko it shares the same universe. Don't watch the anime because it sucks you should play the visual novel for Umineko, if you can't buy it then just watch a playthrough in KZfaq.
