In an ideal world, I would put out a single Special Edition Bluray with ALL versions of each of the films available on it, much like was done with ''Blade Runner''. In fact, I would do this with EVERY film in history that has been retouched. The original versions and the altered versions in the same boxes. This allows people to decide what they want to watch and it also prevents personal restoration by well-meaning but non-expert fans. While at it, I would do the same thing for ALL black and white films: a Bluray Special Edition of all the old non-color films with their black and white version and their colored version. With A.I., it shouldn't be that complicated now. Imagine all these old cinematic treasures that would be more appealing to everyone! And for those who are purists, well they just have to stick to the original version and be happy. In the case of Star Wars, Blade Runner, E.T. or other altered projects, there's also something fun about comparing different versions of the same film, if only to explore an author's creative vision as long as we're interested, of course. No matter if these new versions are spoiled or not, the originals would still be there.

Can't wait for the DNR version of 4k80. It is pretty clear the film they used degraded quite a bit as it is OVERLY grainy. If it was released like that there would have been an outcry.

Better wait for version 1.4 or later. The source for this isn't very good and the restoration doesn't seem to include removal of any film damage nor artifacts (dust, grime, etc.)

An important thing to note: Disney is not at all responsible for the further changes made to the films and their color grading, as well as the theatrical versions not being available. Allegedly, Lucas made sure that Disney wouldn’t release the theatrical cuts if he had anything to say about it. And the versions of the films Disney put out on streaming and Blu-ray were mastered by Lucas and 20th Century Fox back in 2012 for the then planned 3D conversions. They’re simply the versions they were handed and which they are allowed to release.

These are great. But 35mm is equivalent closer to 6.5 to 8K. Though those file sizes would be massive.
@SteveRudzinski
@SteveRudzinski 24 күн бұрын
As an indie filmmaker, those file sizes seem totally wrong. The 4k seems right but there's no reason why a 1080 file should only be like 15gb smaller. The resolution is substantially smaller and so the file should be too. Curious how they exported this.

LOVE the original look with grain and colors and I LOVE the original ugly emperor. Total classic. As to why they're editing the colors, I think it's make them look more modern and fit in better with the new movies, so new fans or general normies won't skip them over because they look dated.

Does any other universe like harry potter or LOTR have altered versions? Or is it only star wars that has done these kind of changes?
@Oecobius33
@Oecobius33 26 күн бұрын
Jackson's LOTR had a theatrical cut and a much longer director's cut for each film. And then of course there are movies that get censored in some countries, like the Friday the 13th series. Lots of movies have slightly different versions, usually due to stuff beyond the director's control. But for Star Wars, a change really rocks the boat, since it's a "word of god" change to a canon that many people are super attached to.

@@Dreadpirateflappymany movies have alternate versions but I can't think of a series as massively popular, drastically altered with the earlier versions (the ones that won oscars and were widely circulated in theaters) out of print and never made available in HD. Blade Runner doesn't even have that many differences between its versions. The movie Ridley Scott made afterward (Legend) has way more differences between the two cuts released theatrically and the current directors cut that was actually finished first and used for test screenings, but never released until dvd.

@DDuMas
@DDuMas 29 күн бұрын
As interesting as the originals are, they're not the "definitive" versions of the films. They aren't what George Lucus had in mind. They were the versions, and cuts he didn't have a choice with, because of technology, likely studio pressure, and the lack of retrospect. I'm different though. While I wouldn't mind getting the originals, I want the full VHS experience with them. I want to watch old films in SD. I want them to look old. That's why I'm happy with DVDs for old films especially.
@Knightmessenger
@Knightmessenger 15 күн бұрын
Lucas had final cut on all of his movies. While the studio may have expressed concern or worry about any of the 6, none of them were reedited by the studio.
@DDuMas
@DDuMas 15 күн бұрын
@@Knightmessenger They may not have gotten edit pressure in that sense, but they may have gotten pressure over the length of the film. Especially the theatrical version. Back in the 90s at least, a lot of films were cut for time. Back then the average film may have been closer to 90 minutes. So way back when Star Wars came out, I wouldn't have been surprised if that wasn't at least a conversation.

I’m pretty sure Disney actually has the original version in there vault. I believe they showed little snippets during an ILM documentary on Disney plus. Besides I just have a hard time believing they’d just delete it… or at least I hope not lol. I’m hearing more and more about how George mandated in the contract when selling to Disney that they wouldn’t release the original version while he’s alive. Or something like that. But at least we have the 4k projects.
@apeman505

Ah, it's encouraging to hear that good quality rips can still be made, I had heard it was impossible since the original prints were destroyed by George Lucas, and he had a contract with FOX stating that any remaining reels of film were to be tracked down and destroyed as well. I actually spent quite a bit of money tracking down dvd copies of the special edition that had the original theatrical version as bonus features, my THX VHS Copies are probably no good anymore and I don't have a working VCR anymore anyway. I was considering trying to buy one of the laserdisk prints, but I kind of don't want to buy a laserdisk projector just to watch three movies.
@EvansMedia99
@EvansMedia99 Ай бұрын
I’ve never actually seen a movie played off laser disc but I’ve heard the quality’s actually really good for the time. But I’ve also heard collecting laser discs can get super expensive depending on the movies, and that’s not even counting the player itself. It may be a little difficult to get your hands on depending on your computer skills but I’m just glad that we have this 4k version now. As long as you have the storage, a device powerful enough to play it, and a nice tv your golden!

@@EvansMedia99laserdisc basically looks like dvd quality but can only output composite video. And generally used older masters/scans of movies so apart from the late 90s, LDs often aren't using as good of a source that the movie has today.
