I just watched this tonight on my pc and this version blew my mind. The quality is incredible - both visual and audio, and I cannot recommend finding a copy more. I saw SW in 77, so this particular version holds an incredibly special place in my heart, as it’s probably the closest interpretation of the original movie that’s out there, and really, after seeing this version, and with the super clean Despecialized edition, my own search for the best SW version available today is now over. This version was made for us fogies that saw SW in 77 (ish), and is just totally phenomenal! Yes, this 4K version is huge, and current media servers will indeed probably struggle with playing it, but as the 4K gang stated, it was really done to take fans back as close as possible to the original print, so do as I did, grab a coffee, park yourself in front of the biggest PC screen you have, and be utterly amazed at the care and attention to detail that went into this, and if you care enough about SW, then you’ll find a little glimpse of what going to see this movie was really like, back in 1977. PotPlayer played it perfectly for me tonight.

I downloaded the 4k77 video and I put them on an external hard drive. Luckily these new tv's have USB ports. I watch it that way.

4k83 was great i loved the scene of vader turning back into anakin and killing palpatine

Not a review but just talking about getting 4k77. Dont do a side by side where you make 4k77 look like laserdisc thats not a good representation of the quality.

Glad to hear this exists in 4K and I won't have any trouble locating it, I was a big fan of the Harmy's fan remaster but hadn't thought to seek this out. I'd quibble slightly over your calling this "A New Hope" at all -- anyone who goes thru this bother wants it to be referred to as "Star Wars (1977)". Before there was a franchise.

Great review! Just to clarify: The HD version you mention is actually 720p, not 1080p, and is a completely different restoration project entirely. That one is known as "Harmy's Despecialized Edition" and is based on the official Blu Ray releases, so looks a little more clean, like what an official release might look like. 4K77, on the other hand, is scanned from a film interpositive and is supposed to look more "accurate" to the theatrical release, grain and all. Personally, I'd love to see a 4K restoration similar to Harmy's but using the official Disney+ 4K version as a basis.

I admire the pursuit to create a picture restoration that is faithful to the original. But without restoring the audio from mag masters or a 70mm print, they are only a teaser for what could be. Perhaps when someday George kicks the bucket, there will be an official restoration of the originals with a modern sound mix for each.

I believe it's more of a morality thing, with the owning it before downloading thing. Because no matter what, it's illegal to download these movies, but it's more morally correct to own the movies first. It's still ridiculous to me that there hasn't been an official remaster of these movies without all the George Lucas changes.
