Depends on what aperture you want to shoot. If you want to shoot at say f/8 or f/11 at ISO 100, then probably not. If you are good to use something like ISO 800+ then yes, you could make it work.

After watching Gerald Undone's video about camera reviews, it's real obvious now when youtubers are just making long adverts that they're getting paid for and they just lose so much respect that was built up. The audience now are definitely becoming more aware of what's being shown to them and honestly, getting tired of the same 'selling out' to companies for a quick buck.
@NathanElson
@NathanElson 25 күн бұрын
This comment is hilarious, because Gerald made a SPONSORED video about this exact same light, and yet, you're over here on my channel shitting on me for the same thing and quoting his video as your new eye opening point of view. So is it that you want all content to be behind a pay wall, and you're going to spend your money to gain access to it? Or is it that you just want everything provided to you for free and those creating it don't deserve to be paid for the work they create? Which is it - that you want to pay my bills, or that I don't deserve to get paid for what I do? I only accept paid reviews for gear that I actually use and like. I also state when I am getting paid, which is what Gerald's video was actually about, people not stating when they were being compensated, but you obviously missed that train. I get more offers for sponsored videos than you can imagine, you just don't see them because I only accept sponsors from companies whose products I actually use. You're getting tired of people 'selling out' aka making a living, well I'm getting tired of people like you and your entitlement because you somehow feel like because you clicked a subscribe button that you are owed something.

I had an interesting career in photography and printing which started at age 16 in high school when learned to SCUBA dive at a South Side Chicago YMCA and bought a Nikonos II underwater camera with tethered Ikelite flash cube flash after a trip to the Florida Keys. In 1970 -72 at Knox college I started doing PJ work for pay using the Nikonos II and a pair of Nikon F bodies with 35mm f/2 and 85mm f/1.8 lenses, teaching myself the Zone System from Adams’ books with a 1° spot meter which allowed me to produce a portfolio of Zone System B&W prints which convinced top wedding pro and teacher Monte Zucker to hire me as his $50 per week apprenticeship. It quickly evolved into shooting wedding receptions in a tuxedo for his rich client after Gary Bernstein, the assist he had trained for two years, quit to strike out on his own. It took me only 12 months to get burned out because I just don’t have the temperament needed for retail photography. What had attracted me to photo journalism was being a thoughtful introverted observer of things. I learned to deal with the uncooperative and often drunk guests at weddings with a smile but didn’t enjoy it and realized I needed to find a different way to make a living. That came in the form of job in the photo lab of National Geographic I got via a neighbor who was asst. manager of the photo labs there. I loved and thrived on the technical side of photography and by reading every book in the lab’s library donated by its RIT grad managers I got very good at it, and the process control for our lab and developed several new production techniques based on on things I learned in the books on my own. Realizing I needed a college degree to advance into management I enrolled as business major at GW University and printing technology at Montgomery college in the evenings. But my teacher at Montgomery College after discovering my level of experience recommended as his replacement and the next semester I became an instructor in the evenings a something I did between 1975 and 1980 and the reason I was never motivated to moonlight as a photographer-teaching was less work for more pay. I left National Geographic in 1977 because I realized to getting promoted to lab manager would take 10-15 years until someone retired and even then the pay would not be great so I took a job as technical troubleshooter for the Customer Service department of Judd&Detweiler which was the original letterpress printer of National Geographic and printed high-quality magazines and Newsweek. In 1979 I was promoted to Production Process Manager which allowed me to buy a medium format camera and color enlarger I used for Zone System B&W and making my own color prints. The production manager job at Judd’s led in 1982 being offered a Foreign Service job as production manager by the US Information Agency managing its Manila, Philippines printing center from 1983-87, 90-95, and 99-2001 where in my free time I did underwater stills with a Nikonos V and electronic flash and started shooting videos on Sony’s Hi-8 camcorders. My other skillset was programming and system development and I ran our Mac network connecting it to the internet in 1994 which is when I started doing web pages with digital photos I took with an Apple Quicktake100. In 2000 I bought a 2.1 MP Kodak DC290 which could fire external flashes and I taught my first class in digital photography I convinced Kodak Philippines sponsor, putting the class notes on my web site in HTML. I finally made the switch entirely to digital in 2004 with a Canon 20D and ‘holy trinity’ of EF-S 10-22mm, 24-70mm f/2.8 L, 70-200mm f/2.8 L and a pair of 580ex flashes I used for PJ work at my church and work when photos were needed, upgrading to a 50D body in 2008. I also bought a set of four studio lights and modifiers to test the waters of doing portraits for hire after retiring from the Foreign Service. After a few free sessions for friends and neighbors I decided to just retire and work on my golf game instead. I tried to share what I learned on DPR and Fred Miranda and a tutorial web site I created photo.nova.org/ but got tired of the trolls and decided to retire from that too. By 2012 I was shooting mostly videos on an iPad3, editing in iMovie and sharing on KZfaq for friends and family. In 2018 I opted to upgrade iPad and iPhone instead of buy newer video capable DSLR because I found the cost of edit the footage on my Mac off-putting compared to doing it on iPad. In 2021 -22 I shot and edited over 200 videos documenting the construction of a new house and golf tutorials for friends. After moving into the new house along the ICW I decided to shoot wildlife. To test the waters I bought a 2x converter for my 70-200mm waiting for Canon to sell the R6mkII which I bought with a RF 100-500, RF 800mm f/11 and a Meike VND EF-RF converter used with my EF glass when shooting CLOG video at ISO 800 @ 1/60th. I also invested in a new M1 Mac Mini to edit on. Check my channel to see what I do - for fun. In retrospect going to work with Monte for $50 per week spared me the five or years and thousands of $$$ I would have spent trying to run my own business into the ground. For the past 50 years I’ve been able to shoot like a pro without the burden of needing to work like one to pay the bills and was able to retire comfortably with a pension which I realized was the better goal for life when offered the Foreign Service job at age 30. 😊

I used to be a photographer. My father got cancer, and I shut things down to help take care of him. After he died, my mother got very sick, and I switched to basically living in a hospital with her. After she died, I had a lot of other complications, so I never really got back into it. When you don’t have a studio, there’s even more time involved with packing gear, traveling to and from locations, etc. During Covid, a couple of apps were created that allow you to connect with another person anywhere in the world and do a photo shoot with that person’s cellphone. It gave me some of my excitement for photography back because I could do things like photographing people thousands of miles away. Obviously, there are limitations, but I’ve done some of my favorite photos ever that way. Unfortunately, people here in the U.S. are scared of anything new, so I have only done a few shoots this way. I did what is definitely one of my best shoots with any kind of gear with a model in Czechia. I probably did the last shoot that I’ll ever do a couple of weeks ago, but my point to all of this is that what matters is doing things in a way that make you love what you do and inspire you to keep doing it.

Nathan - my brother - Many many of us know EXACTLY where you are and what you have been feeling. There's only so much you can give before you need to get - meaning when all of your creative energies are 'sold' this creates a void, of sorts. Creating for you; your way; your style with no direction, no due date, no theme, or client is necessary to nourish your creative soul. I have been a photographer for about 44 years starting in late 1980 as a Freshman in High School (I'm seasoned.. lol..) when there was only film or film. Over the past decade I have been cycling in and out of this 'funk' and have found that doing what you did was the cure. Now, I have a stable of film cameras (35mm and medium format) that I use to recalibrate and nourish myself. This makes me slow down, concentrate, and create with a [fun] purpose (as opposed to clicking away on a card holding thousands of images). There's a certain 'zen' to film that, for me, is cathartic and necessary. Bonus: When I travel or am out and about with my film camera(s) I *ALWAYS* have someone stop me and ask about them which excites me to no end to let them marvel at the mechanical manual masterpieces! Cheers!

Your words are good to hear for the creative soul. I totally agree. I actually have been feeling a bit in a funk and started shooting for myself no matter what it was. “Perfectly imperfect” is what the shot was. A silhouette of a hanging plant against a street light right outside my door. It’s a little blurry from a light breeze but I love it. I know I could shoot it better but it’s just for me and that’s all that matters.

Ya celebrity portraiture is bizarre. With a lot of it, you take away the familiar face and it would be viewed as sub-par photography that no one would glance twice at, but I guess that's the thing with portrait photography, it either has to be an interesting portrait with lighting / location / etc and you need to create that interest, or it has to be of an interesting person and the viewer fills in the rest themselves.
