just bought 10 acres, do you think if i do rotational grazing and fertilize 2x per year and keep up with the grass that i will be able to keep 6-8 head of cattle in those 10 acres? My land is located in Crockett Texas (east texas).

I have 30 acres of tillable ground that has been producing round up ready corn/beans for 15 yrs. I want to get away from renting it out to a farmer and turn my ground into hay and do it myself. Is that a doable task for a newbie like myself?

Question for you. I’m about 4 minutes into the video and you may mention this but if not here it is. What is the difference between cutting hay and feeding it to your livestock vs leaving it in the ground and letting the sheep graze it all winter? I’ve asked some farmers this and they say the nutrients go back to the soil and the pasture isn’t as nutrient dense once it goes dormant. This is coming from traditional farmers that swear by hay though. Just was hoping to get some insight from you. I have enough pasture to graze year round but as of now I’ve always cut it back and fed hay in winter. I could cut down costs and save myself a ton of time and energy and money by not cutting and letting them graze it. Thanks 🙏🏻

It's not a huge problem for us in our pastures but where I do see it taking over is in severely overgrazed pastures that are not rested at all. They are continuously overgrazed so the grasses and legumes are not able to compete. Resting land does wonders for a wide variety of weeds. High density animal impact then rest until recovery.
@AnimeDreamingEcchi3 ай бұрын
@@counterculturefarms so you suggest I pull them out by hand and give it time to catch up? Will the grass come up ?
@counterculturefarms3 ай бұрын
@AnimeDreamingEcchi you could mow if you want but all I would do is pull my livestock off and rest the area till the grasses have recovered. Then using hotwire, I'd heavy graze the area then pull animals off again. Are you rotating and resting your pastures?

Where did you get that bull?
@counterculturefarms3 ай бұрын
Orginal herd from mexico dates back to early 1900s, then brought a top portion to Texas about 20 years ago. In the past few years, we bought the whole Texas herd cows, calves, bulls. We raise em here now in east texas. Have some of his offspring being raised currently, we will have bulls out of him in the near future. We also plan to collect and sell semen off this bull in the future.

I like to hear you spread the good word!!! I'd like to know how it's going keeping the goats free from the poisons and grain? All I seem to hear from most goat people, especially dairy, is that goats have been bred to be weak and dependent upon this intervention to live. I see it possible in the south and west but vast amounts of land are needed to keep them browsing up instead of down into shorter pasture grasses. I'm located in PA, so completely different beast for a goats natural habitat but I need something to control this brush. I'm hoping to turn a small group of nigerian dwarfs into properly managed parasite resistant brush controllers. I just can't find anyone trying to keep goats from consistently being pasture princesses/princes. We need to be doing things better for the sake of the land and the animals in our care. I have high hopes that people figure this out before it's too late. Peace
