I think this is a bit different - I understand where you're coming from but Ethan and Jordan are both willing public figures. People from parts of the country that share socioeconomic positions usually have similar political views. Two people in the midwest with equal housing/salary are more likely to be similar politically than not.

I think the difference is he apologized because of who Jordan Peterson actually is. Ethan wants to be cool with the rainbow folk now, after having a history in that “anti-SJW” sphere of YT in the mid 2010s, and he apologized for something involving someone who actually goes out of their way to antagonize those people (you may not be aware of all of what he’s said but he certainly lets them know he doesn’t approve of them). Of course JBP may say whatever he likes but that includes taking all the criticism that comes from it. Whereas here, to the best of my knowledge, Ethan is not an uncritical supporter of Israel and has criticized the Israeli government and condemned the atrocities in Gaza. So it doesn’t really make sense to me. Now I will say I find Ethan to be one of the most pandering people on the internet so I understand people being skeptical about the depth of his beliefs but as far as I know he’s only ever condemned what is happening to Palestinians which makes the “Zionist” thing a bit of a reach. You can think “supporting Israel’s right to exist” is equivalent to Zionism but I don’t think it’s fair or intellectually honest to equate that belief to justifying genocide especially when someone has lived there before becoming aware of the government’s wrongdoing. That to me is the difference - you can distance yourself from someone for something they did you disagree with, but make sure it’s because of something that actually happened.
