Problem wasn't that it was unarmed. Problem was that it was used for combat at all. Republic should have dedicated escorts to protect them and generally improve it survivability (good engines, hyperdrive and shield needed for VIP protection).

To be fair, they weren't expecting to be attacked. They had been permitted to land, and the shields were down. Just before it was destroyed, the pilots frantically tried to raise shields, just not in time to prevent themselves from being blown up.

I think it depends mostly on period, but during regin of Palpatine class 2 hyperdrives were most prominent in larger vessels (both military and civilian) due to cost/effect ratio, especially on freighters, as additional maintenance could kill off profit margin - there were large ships with faster hyperdrives (Acclamator-class with recordbraking 0,6), but their drives required costly maintenance. But if we are talking about light freighters and other light vessels, then costs of acqiring and maintenance would be not as prohibitive, so couriers (both legal and illegal) could use to increase their profits, as they could take more delivery tasks. As for fighters, it wasn't common to use hyperdrives on them, as most of them were relatively light frames, where outfiting any hyperdrive was impossible due to lack of space/would require to make use of hyperdrive rings/would significantly increase cost of manufacturing. Another problem for fighters was size and cost of full-blown nav computer, which further increased costs or forced designers to include an astromech droid in their design. In the end, when starfighters began to have hyperdrive as deafult pack, they had class 1, because it was already developed and produced Wow, now that I read what I wrote, I see a lot of nerdiness in me
