Wait though, the trade federation used to sell the tanks to people right? They are a major trade company after all, maybe the tanks where not built for droids specifically and got used because it was what they had in the storage
@michaelhough5003
@michaelhough5003 5 жыл бұрын
Yeees, exactly. This is also why I think the b1 is designed how it is. They were built to be sold to traditional military's as a supplementary fighter. They are humanoid so they can use the preexisting hardware of whichever group buys them. Which is why later models like the b2 and b3 are more of human shaped weapons platforms. They were designed to be an all droid army
@DonaldWWitt
@DonaldWWitt 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, not only was a lot of Trade Federation tech designed for sale, Alan and Generation Tech just got some things wrong. Like the main cannon is a Heavy Laser Cannon and isn't the projectile launcher, those are the tubes in the disk.

Allen typically does a good job but when he gets things wrong he does it in a major way. The aat and b1 were not designed as heavy military equipment. The b1 was designed to fight lightly armed pirates on federation ships and the aat was designed to be sold to planetary military forces, not as an assault platform. If we look at the later stuff they actually found worked and made more of for the war we a See the b2 that has shifted from the humanoid form a bit to have better weapons and heavier armour. We see the techno union persuader tank start to take the heavy direct combat role as the war goes on, and that thing is a dangerous weapon, and we see the droid tri fighter. The thing to remember that most forget is that neither side expected war when it happened. The repubilc fleets were very unprepared outside the inner core and the confederacy, as silly as it sounds, didnt expect the republic to fight back against their droids so hard. They both got played hard.

AT-AP seems like a good choice, to do at some point, it's basically the Republic's version of the M3 Medium (Or Lee/Grant as the British called them) only with its flaws magnified by the fact that a walker has to stand UP to turn and aim that massive casemate cannon, while a Tracked, wheeled, or even repulsor vehicle could stay hull mostly down and turn in place to aim. (Also I feel like the Empire taking off the top mounted turret would really quickly transform it from looking like the friendly M3 Medium to a German Panzerjaeger in appearance with one quick edit.
@seriousthree6071
@seriousthree6071 5 жыл бұрын
Weightless is not massless. It should be capable of a much higher speed although it might drift as with a hovercraft. That might be the reason it is slower but in reality the Empire walking tanks are much faster than they should be. The mass of the legs should make them much slower than indicated.

The AAT also doesn't have a forward thrust source other than its own repulsors, when Repulsors have to pull double duty both keeping the vehicle airborne AND propelling it forward speed often drops to a crawl.

That front edge is also a problem. Should be angled up like a skid plate rather than down where it'll bite into the ground.
@seriousthree6071
@seriousthree6071 5 жыл бұрын
It would have been preferable to lengthen the base in order to support the main gun better. it could also mean that the recoil would be more controlled and it could drop onto the ground to fire more accurately. That would have made it possible to reduce the front chin a bit.

I think that the tank was likely designed for another customer but much of the shortfalls could be attributed to greed. Making the tank cheaper and "good enough" would increase profits if they were selling them and making them cheaper when they used them for themselves they were saving money. The trade federation were monetarily focused after all.
@ilo3456
@ilo3456 5 жыл бұрын
That is what I was thinking they were vehicles meant to be sold, kinda like how export tanks in real life are less good than what a country produces for its own military. A lot of early confederate equipment was off the shelf stuff, while the Republic had more specialized and war ready gear and troops, the Separatists wanted to move entirely to the B2 as the main combat droid and mostly use B1s as support personnel, like ship crew, logistics and the like you know non combat, but they could never really replace the B1 since it was so cheap and fast to make, the B2s were legitimately terrifying droids and were the most troublesome, but B1s were the easiest and cheapest so they made up the bulk of the CIS forces, mostly favoring attrition tactics.
@TheRezro
@TheRezro 4 жыл бұрын
I think the same thing. CIS army wasn't initially made for war, with many early equipment being repurchased consumer products. As such AAT clearly wasn't designed for use by droids, but given to them consumer product. It is why later equipment didn't have such odd design.
@TheRezro

I feel like without palpatine intentionally messing shit up, and without the nemoidians being so greedy, the confederacy could have won. Simply replace the B1s with better droids (they don’t have to be bipedal, that’s dumb), make vehicles like the AAT not need a driver, use the AAT as more of a mobile artillery then main battle tank, maybe use the GAT as an mbt until deciding on a better design, etc.
@brokenursa9986
@brokenursa9986 5 жыл бұрын
The B1's are still effective enough when deployed in massive swarms, but the CIS should have deployed the more advanced droids in greater numbers, and they should have been more creative with the placement of their forces. Also, the AAT makes for not just good mobile artillery but also an effective tank destroyer. Ideally, you'd have AAT variants with different guns to serve as artillery or as a tank destroyer, and the MBT role could be filled by the powerful and maneuverable Hailfire until a better design can be put into production.

What always confused me is how the supposedly backwards gungans who are never really referenced outside of Episode 1 and Star Wars Galactic Battlegrounds are the only ones to come up with massive walking shield generators, it's sort of one of the best ideas for a unit anywhere in Star Wars but nobody seems to replicate it.

FYI, it was common during WWII for both American and German tankers to operate with their hatches opened or, as tankers like to call it, unbuttoned. However, only the commander typically had their hatch open and operated unbuttoned because they could get a better view with their own eyes or their eyes and binoculars. They only like to close their hatches during artillery bombardments or when infantry are likely to overrun their vehicle, in which case they'll also lock their hatches in addition to closing them.
@UGNAvalon
@UGNAvalon 5 жыл бұрын
Considering how many tanks are infantry-support vehicles, I could imagine the AAT’s slow speed being an intentional part of its design in order for attached infantry to keep pace. After all, a tank’s flanks/rear could easily be attacked if it ended up moving too far ahead of its accompanying infantry. I think this is why many ww1/ww2 infantry-support tanks (ie not tank-hunters) were intentionally given slower engines when faster ones weee already available.

ww1 the tanks went 5 mph bc they where first very heavy and second bc they didn't have the technology and the know how to make tanks go faster. But you're pretty much right about the rest. Yes some cars went as fast as 120 mph but this is a tank we're talking so it's very heavy.
@michaelstark8720
@michaelstark8720 5 жыл бұрын
@2020Max Gagnon There was slow infantry tanks that served purpouse to protecting infantry. Matilda 1 and 2, Churchill, french had Char B1 bis if im remember right etc... There was also light, medium and heavy tanks. British had Firefly that was tank serving role same as tank destroyers. They also have Crusader and Cromwell that serve fast attack role.
@MrMarinus18
@MrMarinus18 5 жыл бұрын
I think going fast would be a bad idea. Without ground contact they can't swivel and so they have no way to get rid of their forward momentum. So they can't really make turns at high speed. Going fast isn't really useful if you can only do so in a straight line. Not only that but without ground contact the AAT could also easily topple since the turret gives it a high center of gravity.

Ryan Smith They are a more traditional tank, rush the enemy and overwhelm them with your firepower. That’s why the vulnerable stuff was in the rear, with the front being armored. The company that made the AAT had a design philosophy that boiled down to: bulk up the front of a vehicle and put the “fixin’s” in the back.

These Tanks were purposely made with these flaws. Darth Plageuis and Palpatine purposely didn't want the tanks too strong. Otherwise the Clone Army wouldn't be able to take them out. Remember, the Sith had been working behind the scenes for decades to set up the Clone Wars. The CIS had a huge numbers advantage. So to even out the playing field they had to make droids and ground weapons flawed.

I would imagine that a lot of the AAT's power goes into the weapons rather than thrust to move it around. That thing's got a pretty big main gun on it for its size. About the speed of the AAT. I think the reason we see it driving/floating so slow is because the CIS might use it as kind of infantry tank. The relatively low top speed is probably to prevent it from damage. Tanks in the real world have been known to be capable of higher speeds than they normally would be, but had their top speeds purposely limited to prevent damage or so they don’t overextend and get themselves into trouble or leave supporting forces behind and vulnerable. Plus, a large and heavy vehicle moving quickly will undoubtedly cause more damage to whatever it hits, but it will also sustain more damage from impacts. In addition, you don’t want to accidentally bottom out the tank because you traveled too fast. A higher speed would also make it more difficult to maneuver the more massive vehicle.

Weapons are often not only designed for effectiveness but also to be intimidating and fulfill certain rules of engagement stipulated. An ATAT walker is more a weapon of intimidation than an effective attack weapon. And it may be a suitable transport device able to traverse a mixture of surfaces that even tracked vehicles can't cope with. As for the AAT, the maximum speed may be imposed by aerodynamics and weight distribution. A short top-heavy vehicle could be tricky to maneuver at higher speeds.

If the AAT was in siege mode it would shred just about anything in range, even AT-ATs because it could lob shots over them to hit their necks. The AAT was also heavily armoured and could take a beating. The main turret could not be lowered much but it had a lot of other weapons it could bring to bear to cover this gap in the front. Its main disadvantage was that it was weak from the rear. However, if you were unfortunate enough to face this tank head on then you were basically done for. It could also fire a variety of rounds for any situation. Positioned correctly and in mass numbers, these things owned.

Stopping distance and time is the reason for a speed governor on repulser craft. The AAT is a carry over from when the Trade Federation used a more conventional army. In order to save money , they designed their droids to be capable of operating already existing equipment that way they wouldn't have to redesign everything. In short, the equipment was made for humanoids, so the droids were made humanoids so they could operate the equipment.

As a world of tanks player this tank would be very OP if used correctly. Based on the specs this guy can work hills and ridges like a beast. Since the shells in the hull are aimed by moving the tank I assume elevating the entire thing isn't a problem. Therefore unlimited gun elevation/depression. The HEAT shells would be great against enemy armored vehicles, and it would deal a ton of ramming damage with that frontal armor. I want to see human crew operating this thing to full potential, maybe some rebels find one? Idk, they're nowhere near bad as portrayed.

I do really like the aesthetic of the AAT. I will say one reason for the AAT having a mechanical interface is having a use for the B1 battledroid. The B1 was originally designed for security duty and not quite fit for front line combat (part of why the CIS started developing B2s and other more deadly droids). At the point where their existing arsenal of B1s can pilot a tank, you might as well make one for them rather than develop an expensive AI core for your vehicle.

The biggest flaws to the AAT is its high profile, making it easy to spot and target. Like the M3 Lee tank of WW2, the AAT would probably be targeted and fired upon first before it could shoot. And due to its main cannon turret being so high, that invites the danger of toppling over the tank, should the cannon fire while perpendicular to the main body. That's probably why they mostly fired in a forward direction.

One major advantage to placing the turret at the rear is reducing overall length of the tank itself. This gives it a greater advantage in urban and forested areas. If the tank is not taller than it is long, the blindspot would be a non issue.

I imagine the height of the vehicle is for battlefield visibility purposes - though I agree, I think it could have been probably half its current height - with a better sensor array to make up slightly compromised visibility/situational awareness. Maybe even rocket-assisted shells.

As they are, the tanks seem like they should function more as a tricked-out mobile defense turret than a main assault tank. Park 'em outside with their backs to the walls/gates; they can stay well-supplied and are guaranteed to have multiple types of support as they'll be guarding the bases and fortified outposts. All dem gunz work better when the enemies are kinda forced to come at you head-on.

My best guess on how repulsorlifts work is similar to how inertial compensators work. The repulsors either create little bubbles of anti-gravity around the bottom of a vehicle, or uses antimatter generators to repel the regular matter of the vehicle and ground away from the field of projected antimatter. That's my best guess. Let me know what you think. Thanks for listening, your friend and fan, Shock Trooper T.V.

@ExcaliburHeavyBattlecruiser

I could only think of these: 1. Non-dedicated Warship: They were originally huge buildings for the Mon Calamari. This means that it was less efficient when it came to using space for crew quarters, storage, weapons, etc. 2. Relatively Weak Firepower: MC 80s have a decent punch against other capital ships, until it goes up against something like a star destroyer where it is severely outgunned. Although MC 80s had better shields, it wasn't always enough to compensate for their firepower deficit and thus lost many engagements. 3. Diluted Weapon Coverage: Whilst positioning weapons to cover all areas of the ship has it's benefits, it also has it's drawbacks. It couldn't really concentrate most firepower on a single spot, reducing effectiveness on larger capital ships. Unfortunately for the rebels, large capital ships were what they were up against. 4. Lack of similarity: MC 80s and really any Mon Calamari ship made individual ships different from one another. This made maintenance more difficult as no two MC ships were alike.
