You cannot expand local services on the WCML and or local and cross country services on the lines that interface with it between Rugby and Stoke via Coventry and Birmingham. This stretch of track is already timetabled at over 110% throughout the day. If trains are not cancelled for any other reason they still need to be cancelled for lack of track and or platform space. The reason for this lack of space, is gaps needed between trains so that express services are not delayed by slower local and freight services. By putting the express traffic on HS2, you have the opportunity to run much tighter train spacing on WCML , such as on some of the lines into London that can operate at 27 trains instead of the 6 this stretch of the WCML normally achieves. You may ask "why not widen the existing track", the reason is that you will need to blat, cut and demolish your way through 190 years of development and nature along the line, which includes two major cities, which is why the numerous attempts to widen this stretch of line to 4 track since it was first mooted in 1860 have all failed! Also whilst the Spanish flu may have reduced the immediate need, it was back on the agenda in 1921, so no reason to think Covid will be any longer lasting.

Not only that but upgrading the WCML would also mean 15 years of Delays and Cancellations and also 15 years of No Intercity Express Services on Saturdays and Sundays

But those intercity trains serve the towns on these routes and they are not served by HS2 so what you are saying is that all those towns should lose all their fast intercity services and have far more stopping trains! If anyone living in those towns wants to make a long distance rail journey, they would find it takes much longer or they would have to try and reach a station on HS2 to then change to a fast train, meaning more changes and far greater expense. So how exactly is HS2 helping the people of those towns connect to the rest of the country? Surley they would want the same intercity trains to continue after HS2 is buildt?

@@dacorum8053 They are going to get a more frequent service that is in reality only marginally slower due to the more rapid acceleration and deceleration of these lighter emu. For most the convenience of more frequent service will out weigh the marginally longer travel time.

@@grahamariss2111 Thank you for your reply but what you say is not true! Milton Keynes, for example, is served by dozens of intercity trains a day and the fastest journey time to London is 30 minutes but stopping trains take 55 minutes. These fast trains were the reason many people bought homes in MK! Take away the intercities to provide more stopping trains and the fastest journey time to London will nearly double and that is unacceptable. Long distance commuters depend on fast trains to and from London so, for them, HS2 is a VERY BAD IDEA INDEED that will adversely affect their lives. Intercity passengers from Milton Keynes and HS2 would mean longer journeys and a far worse and more inconvenient service than before. It would mean changing trains and much longer journey times. All I have written is also true for other towns and cities on the WCML currently served by intercity trains and it seems as though there is a conspiracy not to talk about it. But the biggest reason what you say is not true is that your suggestion that they would get a more frequent service is because all that depends on the completion of HS2 beyond Birmingham. That looks increasingly unlikely. If and when the Birmingham section is completed, you would still have to run all the intercity services to Manchester on the old WCML and there would be no scope for more trains on the line, making your argument that HS2 will increase capacity completely untrue. Most passengers would still want to use the old WCML because it connects directly with Birmingham and the north west and the same is equally true for those travelling from the north west to London, especially as HS2 is now going to terminate at Old Oak Common in Acton and not Euston. The only sensible conclusion to draw is that HS2 is a white elephant, vanity project that has blown the budget and should be scrapped before more good money is throw after bad.
@grahamariss2111
@grahamariss2111 9 ай бұрын
@@dacorum8053 You ignore several factors. The planned new WCML fleet of significantly higher performance of the new generation emu will not give us the binary choice of pendalino minimum stop super fast tilting train v Siemens stop at every station emu that we have today that you refer to. There will be a greater flexibility of running fleet that is closer aligned on performance, an example would be the sort of service mix you get on the Chiltern line, where you have "semi" express services. True whilst not building HS2 to Manchester and Leeds will negate a lot of the benefits of HS2, but even if it just goes to Birmingham it will at least resolve the number one capacity issue on the British rail network today, which is the congestion on the spur between Rugby and Stoke via Coventry and Birmingham as well as the capacity issue at New Street all of which are timetabled at 110% throughout the day, meaning that if trains are not cancelled for other reasons trains need to be cancelled for lack of capacity. The line South of Rugby or Rugby to Stoke bypassing Coventry and Birmingham and onto Manchester only faces periodic capacity issues. The South of Rugby services will also benefit from the reduction of Services from London to Coventry and Birmingham as well.

A very bland response from our local MP, Mr Steve Brine sees this as an important "levelling-up" project. This should easily be countered by the broadband and the catastrophic carbon cost of the project. Outside of the COVID pandemic, the UK’s rail infrastructure during peak periods was already running at absolute maximum capacity. You have only to joint the millions of commuters for an hour to fully appreciate the experience of that kind of closeness. The UK needs massive investment in the railway. Sadly that investment has never been on the agenda of any government, irrespective of their political leanings. The promised remuneration after the railways were decimated during WW2 never materialised and they have been adopting a ‘make do and mend’ ever since. You simply can’t close lines for renovation without facing an uproar of public condemnation for the disruption it causes. There is a reason the bulk of Network Rail employee’s work night shifts. Where two lines were laid by the Victorian’s, now we need 4 to carry the additional requirements of rail operating companies to meet the public’s demands. That’s another land grab to force purchase the rail side ground needed to broaden 2 tracks to 4. Bridges need rebuilding, new embankments, lineside homes demolished, tunnel widening, the list goes on, and in all that work, there will be casualties, lots of them. Red Top headlines, social media outcry and outside broadcasts from the TV crews will all be there when the family are forced from their home to broaden the comuter route into Birmingham New Street. When the local play park is removed to add new tracks to Newcastle, there will be pitchforks and burning torches. Is HS2 where the government should be spending its investment on UK rail? Clearly no and for all of the reasons Chris has offered. However if you really want improvements in this country’s railway network for all of our future’s, you have to accept that it will come at a cost. Tomorrow’s diggers May end up in your back garden...

A small patch of woodland that has been a part of my life since I was a boy is currently surrounded on all sides by activity, Crop Gard's scattered around to scare the wildlife. I have just copied and pasted this message to a few different users to try and get some attention to it. I have some information that could stop this land being destroyed. There is a property Transfer deed in Hull, East Yorkshire, with a valid Claim to the 'Whole of the Land'. This has been covered up since all of the land was sold as a Legal EState, Fee Simple Absloute in Possession, Free From Encumbrances, With ALL the POWERS, in 1932, by mistake or fraud. The Estate belonged to the Haworth-Booth family, who sold it by mistake and died intestate. This is the highest form of land ownership and cannot be defeated in any way. You need to understand the full legal meaning of those words to realise the significance of this deed. The estate is vast and includes lands, all over the country. The government is aware of the deed and the claim which will follow. There is an ongoing National investigation, as a National Emergency concerning this deed, which I hope will come to a head very soon. I emailed the house of commons and warned them not to destroy the forests for this railways scheme. These TRAITORS are concealing this TREASONOUS fraud. I have absolute proof. John Prescott is involved in the HS3 scheme and I upset him when I discovered his plans in 2018. He stomred out of a meeting on Victoria Dock when I went into the guildhall and complained about him. He knows they have no legal powers to follow this scheme and they will be prosecuted. www.mirror.co.uk/news/politics/lord-prescott-storms-out-launch-11861758

The idea that HS2 is only for business travellers, and for intercity travel is wrong. HS2 will release a lot of capacity on the existing lines for local lines and freight. Your point on covid is wrong. WFH will only reduce demand by ~8%.
@mondoman712
@mondoman712 2 жыл бұрын
@The Rain HS2 will remove the express intercity services from both the ECML and the WCML which will leave a lot of space for local and freight services. Running services with different speeds on the same lines, as we are doing now, severely reduces your capacity because the fast trains have to leave a lot of space for the slow ones so they can keep going fast. You take everyone going between the cities that HS2 does connect off the existing lines, that leaves more space for people getting between the towns that HS2 doesn't connect. It will also leave more space for freight on the existing lines. As for ticket prices, they are high right now on the existing lines, because we're beyond the capacity at the moment. Adding a massive amount to the supply should do something about that.

HS2 is only linking London with other major cities, that doesn't help the majority of people to ditch their cars to get about. If we want more people using trains then local rail infrastructure needs improving. I live in the Welsh valleys and existing track needs upgrading and more regular services need to be offered. If you don't have a car here you can't get about. The money being spent on HS2 would go a long way towards linking up communities with local work hubs and enable more people to not travel by car.
@mondoman712

@@aardvarkinnit2863 HS2 is a massive upgrade to all of the local infrastructure in between the places it serves, because it means we can move the express intercity services off of the existing lines, freeing up massive amounts of capacity from the existing infrastructure to run local services. I agree that other places should also be getting more investment but HS2 is at least providing this upgrade for a large portion of the country.

And why does STOP HS2 NOT push this point, when it should have done long ago? Do remember consultations are NOT VOTES! Consultation by definition is to take and receive advice....and advice can be ignored... and if Hs2 via land agents have dodgy contracts and Ts and Cs...its no surprise they are getting away with murder....I do wonder how many falsely trusted their land agents, and failed to read their Ts and Cs .. needless to say...we have....and they may go forth and multiply, after what we have seen!

Do you believe HS2 shouldn't go ahead because you are paid by Jaguar Land Rover, Chris? How much did they pay you for that PR and marketing campaign back in 2017? Or would you prefer it halted because you quite like flying? It's a real shame we can't travel at all at the moment, but fortunately for us, HS2 is going ahead (and is already being built) because nature cannot afford for us to live in a congested, toxic and gridlocked country where the car is worshipped, regardless of the cost to our health, wellbeing and livelihoods. If you were to turn your campaigning attention to the Government's unnecessary £27bn new roads programme or the destructive Lower Thames Crossing, both of which will destroy much, much more woodland, I'll be first in the queue to join you.

I'm not particularly pro or anti-HS2. But I do agree this is just a vanity project. Moreover, it encourages the likes of LNWR, WMT & Chiltern to run more short formed trains than they do now, when they could be solving a lot of overcrowding and/or pathing issues by simply running longer trains. They're called multiple units for a reason! Alas, our railway like to push the "Treat 'em mean, Keep 'em keen" model of austerity by pretending that a train is a bus. This government sponsored model of austerity also aims to make rail travel unattractive, not only by short formed overcrowded trains, but by their ludicrous 'solution' of tackling overcrowding by fare increases, which punish mostly, working people going to their work place. Now that we have this pandemic, many people have found they can actually work from home, so is it not now the time, to 1) abolish peak times (like the bus network) & 2) behave and run trains of sensible length, instead of being mean to people for the hell of it? Surely, electrification to Leicester & Oxford, & the Bicester to Milton Keynes projects are far more important than HS2 vanity project.

No they are not, the biggest single issue on the UK rail network is the capacity limit on the WCML between Rugby and Stoke via Coventry and Birmingham, this is restricting not only expansion of much needed local services on the WCML but also the local and cross country services on the lines that interface with it. This problem is by far the most pressingissue in the UK network at the moment and it is one of the main issues resolved by HS2.
