I was very obsessed with make up about 10 years ago when I was watching all of those make up videos on KZfaq. It really has an influence on people when they are watching all these women with tons and tons and even full rooms full of make up. Now, I wear some powder, blush, lipstick, and big sunglasses. 😁

My family decided years ago to stop taking part in the mass consumption & propaganda schemes of retail marketing. We agreed that if we give a gift that it be something that we make or create for that person. Home made baked goods, craft, sewing, or knitted items. Something built of wood, glass or ceramic. We no longer just dash out and buy made in China stuff out of obligation. We learned to use things we already have to make creative, useful items. These things have special memories. My Grandmother crocheted beautiful snowflakes for my Christmas tree each year for several years. Each one a different design. She pass away in 2008 and they are precious to me. Every Christmas I place them on my tree and remember the love that went into creating them. No discount code, percentage off or clearance price can replicate that memory. God bless our Republic.

I teared up and almost cried reading about your grandmother. That is beautiful. I'm so terribly sorry for your loss. I guess one tip I have that may be useful is that we have the same kind of homemade Christmas. The only exception we used to make was with my grandmother. We all knew that she was on a very limited income, and she loved to just sit quietly in her rocking chair and crochet or embroidery projects. So we decided to buy plain pillow cases or plain tablecloths and included all of the embroidery floss she would need for the pattern we'd buy. Same for yarn & pattern for crochet projects. This gave her materials to enjoy her hobbies all year, then she would wrap up the finished projects and gift them to us for Christmas. She was able to give all her children and grandchildren free gifts that she knew was exactly what we wanted and we got priceless heirlooms we still use today.

Love garage/yard sales. When my son was young, I took with me. People gave him free stuff all the time. As he got older, if he wanted something he had to buy it at the yard sales, as he hit 8 and 9 and wanted big things he had to bargain at the yard sales and shop for price/sales. He was never allowed to pay full price. It’s an important life skill. He learned to ask/bargain for things he wanted. At twelve he wanted a gaming computer. It was way out of my budget at 4K. I chipped in 1k, he used 500 from his savings account and bought parts over the internet and with a friend built his own gaming computer. It built a confidence and a sense of teamwork.

If you STOP buying fragrances you will START saving your money on doctor’s visits and on medicine for sure. Car washes are more important in the winter months, to remove the road salt. It's not just on the surface layer of your car, its crammed into the crooks and crannies of the under carriage, which is all metal. So yes, there could be damage going on to your undercarriage, but it's your call.

My grandmother taught me that bar soap should be unwrapped when I get home from the store. She taught me to stash the bars in clothes drawers, clothes closets and linen closets. This first gave a fresh scent to your clothes while it dried out to a harder bar. Secondly the dried out hard soap would last longer.when used for bathing. I've done this since jr. high but now that I'm almost 60, the trick is not forgetting to take the soap to the washroom with me.

Kate Kaden I’ve been trying not to spend much and get rid of things I don’t need in my life so I haven’t been shopping much. I have gotten some good deals at places like TJ Max. I’m not buying much from places like old navy either. I believe a lot of these places carry fast fashion clothes. My take on that is after you wash it, it never looks he same, sort of junk. It may be inexpensive but the quality is cheap. I think when I do go clothes shopping I’ll pay a little more to get better quality to last longer.

I love to give gifts too, and haven't always been the most creative. But I have learned a few things over the years...Can you give the gift of food (ie: a small basket of fresh fruit or teas; Dollar Tree often has some nice all-purpose baskets...Also: a certificate stating "FREE DINNER!" You can make it on your computer, and, after planning a simple, tasty meal, allow them to make the date. "Say it with flowers!" used to be a motto of some florist. Try fresh cut flowers like daffodils or tulips in a pretty vase (thrift store, Dollar Tree or even one of your extras). Or let them have the fun of growing their own with flower seeds, soil & a pretty planter. Make a scrapbook you put together "just" for them (pictures of you and them, free magazines from libraries/thrift stores, dr. offices, etc., encouraging statements on colored paper, , dried flowers, etc)...We've gotten some beautiful, quality bath towels at Ross Dress For Less ($10 for bath towels, etc.). Like to celebrate seasons? Dollar Tree, Michaels, etc. often has "silk" flowers and leaves. Let your little man pick out some miniature pumpkins (especially if they are 2 for $1 or less) from the grocery store or Farmer's Market in fall, print out free coloring pages of leaves and let him color them and place on windows or refrigerator, and make some pumpkin-oat muffins at home for Fall delights. Our daughter and her husband are quite poor, and she'll cook enough for 4, then save the extra 2 servings for lunches for them while they are at work. We also do what you do with Amazon -- that way you avoid emotional quick spending.

I eliminated paper plates, disposable pans, and plastic utensils from my inventory and am not replacing them. I can wash a load of dishes very cheaply. I did switch detergents, I am just testing that out to see if it is more expensive if I have to use more to do the dishes, or run a whole second load if the soap gives out. I do not use paper towels to clean up spills, I only use them in an emergency. I have some but try not to purchase them. I have lots of tee towels, dish cloths, and rags. So, it is so much cheaper to just throw these into the washer with clothes than to keep purchasing paper towels, and it doesn't cost any extra to run that load of laundry with two or three extra pieces of clothing. I still purchase the frozen bread dough, I use that when It gets closer to the end of the month to make bread, cinnamon buns (which I haven't made in a while) However, I do have a bread machine, I can make loaves of bread and I have a knife to cut the bread. I just find that when the bread is 10 for 10 it is a better bargain at the store, and it is convenient. But, I do use a combination of the three things so that once I purchase what I need for the month I don't run out. I don't like to freeze bread I make in the bread maker as it doesn't have the preservatives of store bought bread and it tends to not be as fresh when you thaw it out. Store bought bread usually feels and tastes like fresh when it is thawed. the bread maker bread does not taste as good in stuffing either. I also just bought a chef prep and I and mad home made bread crumbs to use in recipes. Some one told me to keep those in the fridge to eliminate them going bad, they are bread and could easily mold. but I use Italian style bread crumbs all the time to fry chicken fingers, steak fingers, put in meatloaf and so forth that will save me about 3 dollars a month as I go thru two large boxes of bread crumbs, and i have some Italian style seasoning mix so I will add that and see if i cant get it accurately seasoned. I can make the crumbs out of the end crusts from the bread at pratically no cost. I got the chef prep free when I had my party. I find I am using it all the time to chop up vegies, bread, and anything cause its cool and its easy to use with very little effort. I did away with the house phone, I use my cell that has 500 minutes a month and don't usually use all those minutes. it was the lowest price plan I could find. i can always go to unlimited for an extra 17.61 per month. and, I am still using bill pay to pay as many bills as I can so I don't have to drive to pay them. I don't have to pay postage. I have 11 of them in my bill payer. if it is only a one time bill, I will send it, but anything that is a repeat I go in and have them all post on the day my check goes into bank, I am almost out of forever stamps....but stamps come out of household money, which is the only thing usually adjustable I make sure that does not go toward regular bills. if I don't use it all, then I put it toward paying off my cc. I opened an account to put coupon money, rebate money, and change so that it saves for six months at a time. I haven't decided what goal I am going to use that for, but I am sure I will think of something.

I got rid a lot of my Knick knacks. And frames. I do not hang things on my walls. I don’t like holes in the wall or have the motivation to hang stuff. I don’t wash my car either. I am not running my a/c at the moment and I just sleep with a couple of sheets on my bed. The water where I live is pretty awful, so I bought a Brita pitcher that filters water. Total game changer for me. Saved me a ton of money on bottled water. I am asking for a better crock pot for my birthday or Christmas. The one I have sucks, doesn’t cook well at all. Love that we have given up many of the same things. I had to give up Amazon Prime, because they raised the price and I knew I would not be able to buy like I used to.

I stopped buying body wash a year ago. Saves so much money and plastic from the trash. I used to buy ivory but sometimes I splurge at the farmers market for a locally made goat milk soup or another locally made gourmet soap. Even the bar of the fancy soap is $5 and lasts about three months. Still way cheaper than body wash. We also stopped buying deodorant, foot spray and feminine spray. Instead, we use baking soda for all of that. So cheap and works much better than any deodorant and it’s 100% natural. I was super skeptical at first but tried it when I ran out of deodorant and was blown away.

Frugal hand soap tip. I refill my soap containers with 99 cent shampoo. Or leftover shampoo that I’m just sick of. Suave and v05 come in lots of nice scents super cheap. Sometimes even .89 on sale. One bottle will easily fill 3 containers and no one will know. I know they sell bigger hand soap refills but I can never find good scents. Ps. New subscriber and loving your videos.

Some people call and ask if there are refills on the cookie trays...I buy the ingredients all year long when there are sales...also use the reward points from my credit card (paid off monthly) for extra charity giving starting in mid November...bar soaps are the best! Putting things in your Amazon cart and waiting for a potential price reduction is a great tip. You can also put things in your wish list section. There is an app called PricePulse. It downloads your wish list and notifies you when there is a price reduction. You can also type in anything and see if price wise it is a good price point to buy based on the product price history. So cool! Try it!

My coffee cup IS a bowl with a handle. I ONLY get B&BW when their hand soaps are on sale for $2.95. I bought myself some for mother's day when they were on sale and had a limit of 15. We reuse the B&BW pump bottle for our daughter for her body wash. That way she doesn't use to much soap plus its easier for her to handle with wet hands. I ABSOLUTELY hate knick knacks and don't wear makeup other than chapstick.

Also, my kids favorite place to get toys is our local thrift shop they buy themselves a couple toys for less than a dollar , no joke. During the Bath and Body Works semiannual sales, I came across a sale on the body fragrance mist, and they were three dollars each! As if I’m going to pass that up! And I am obsessed with the candles. I usually give my daughter-in-law a couple each year, and I have a stockpile. But I only purchased them during the semi annual sales, and I buy them when they are two for $20. I haven’t purchased anything except for one candle in the last year. I think it was called butter rum eggnog. It sold out immediately, so I guess I wasn’t the only one who liked it. 🤔

Great tips! Here's a question for you...did you have one giant purge when you decided to embrace minimalism, or was it a process that went on through some period of time? Seems like I go round and round from room to room and back again when it comes to purging. I have stopped buying all the stuff I used to buy, I'm good with that, and I'm using up what I have, but I still have lots of stuff, and I do use a lot of it since I love hanging out at home and it keeps me busy. Amazon is my nemesis, even if I put stuff in the buy later, it will eventually at some point end up living in my home.
@KateKaden
@KateKaden 5 жыл бұрын
Great question Ellen! I would love to tell you I just KonMari'd the whole thing and got it over with, but I never did it quite that way. My video that will be coming out Friday will show you the DISASTER we encountered regarding my son's playroom/our laundry room. I cannot wait to show you. I feel like most of my life I've experienced what you are describing "the round and round" thing. UGH. It's been a journey. I'm naturally a pack rat so I've had to create new habits. I feel like we have to get to ground zero and lot of that is not DECLUTTERING, it's more DE-OWNING. Getting rid of all the things that we don't value. Then finding a clear place to put the things we value and then relentlessly monitoring what comes in going forward. ONLY the things we love/have value or are truly useful. It's taken YEARS for me:) I hope this was a little helpful!!!!
@EllensAbundantLifeonLess
@EllensAbundantLifeonLess 5 жыл бұрын
That seems to be my process as well. I'm just not to where I want to be yet. When you retire your needs change a lot and you no longer need/value the things you did when you worked. On the other hand money becomes a scarcer Commodity and you can't afford to repurchase things, so you also have to be careful what you get rid of. It's a process! Thanks for your response! Looking forward to your video!
@thebestwillow
@thebestwillow 5 жыл бұрын
Maybe it's okay to go round and round purging. Some things, it will naturally take longer for you to be able to bear parting with than others. Since you say Amazon is your nemesis, I would consider stopping using it altogether.
