I wish I had learned about finance in high school and college. It should be required to take a class about money including credit cards, budgets, investing, and keeping track of how much you earn vs. how much you spend. Nobody teaches us that. Credit cards are not "free money". But nobody tells you that and you think paying the minimum payment is paying it back slowly. But nobody talks about the interest rate and how you end up paying much more than the item actually costs. Luckily I learned albeit late in life, I am now debt free and will NEVER be in debt again. I'm a person for whom cash is king. of course with the pandemic, I've been using my debit card which is really the same but it's not. Does that make sense? If not, disregard this whole comment., LOL

My biggest money sponge used to be eating at restaurants, plus the expensive drinks that came with it. Now it's 3 things: dairy, alcohol, and random admin expenses or unforeseen expenses. - Dairy: don't laugh, but I love cheese, and I love putting half&half in my coffee every morning. I always try to buy dairy on sale, but it's still expensive, and I consume way too much of it. Probably close to 25% of my grocery budget is dairy :O - Alcohol: I drink less these days, but this is still expensive, and takes up too much of my budget. Not going out and only drinking at home with my boyfriend helps, but still too much $ is spent in this category. - Admin expenses/unforeseen expenses: Oh, need a new passport? $200! Some fee you forgot about or didn't even know about? $160! Etc. It adds up. So in 2021 I will cut back on the cheese a bit, set a stricter alcohol budget and have at least 2 months of the year completely sober (I actually did it this year too, and already spent less in total), and set aside a bit of $ each paycheck to admin/unforeseen, so that when those extras happen, I will already have it covered.

My mum always said: “No se puede estirar el pie mas de lo que da la manta” “ you can’t stretch your foot longer that what the blanket covers”. She always told us, even as kids, that if you earn ten you get to spend nine but you have to save one, because if you earn ten and you spend eleven you owe one to somebody, and that’s a real problem. Us Spaniards traditionally don’t use credit. We are starting to copy american models but luckily consumer debt is not extended yet. We usually use credit for housing and cars and some people use it for vacations... dangerous in my opinion. I am debt free except for one mortgage and I cannot wait to sell that flat an become completely debt free!

Kate all I can say is YES ABSOLUTELY!! I always hear people say to live “within” your means. I’m always like no live “below” your means. That’s where the savings is. I love that show till death do us part. I used to watch it all the time. At my job I get to help people with their budgets. It is shocking to see people making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year not knowing what their expenses are and living way above their means and in so much debt. I always get surprised by the people making minimum incomes and being able to save and not be in debt. Just like you said sometimes it’s not about the money coming in it’s about the money going out. I completely agree with you when it comes to groceries that’s where the savings is. There are so many ways to save money on food. Meal planning to me is the #1 tip. Great job as always! Loved every minute of it.

Never actually been in debt for anything other than my degree/ education. My mum always said "if you don't have it, don't spend it". My biggest downfall though was to spend EVERYTHING I got every month on nice things. I would always think "you've earned this' ... you can save next month etc etc. It took me 10 years to suddenly hear the words 'Pay yourself first". THEN I started to save and only if you do this, and live below what you earn can you save. I dread to think how much I have thrown away on 'STUFF' that is no longer in my life anyhow. Wise words. Thanks... wish I'd found you sooner.

Biggest challenge: food budget...I have done better this past two weeks but I spent ALOT of time planning & budgeting. It works! Just sucking up my time. I’m hoping it gets easier & praying I don’t give up (again). Another struggle has been using credit cards to buy all the monthly things, overspending, then struggling to pay them off before interest hits...such a cycle! I’m SO close to them being 100% paid off!! As I use them, I transfer the money immediately. Again, time consuming. But! I do believe that because it’s been such a struggle that once we get 100% ahead of it, we WONT go back! Thanks for the video!! Defiantly inspires me to keep pressing in!!

Years ago I had the most shocking but also most rewarding day when I finally sat down and embraced a budget. In my case what finally worked for me was using YNAB to get ahold of spending and income. From that point forward I have moved the needle forward in terms of personal financial stability and responsibilities. It is a game changer when you finally see where your money is going, where your money is coming from and what you are choosing to spend it on.

As silly as this may sound I am so close to being debt free that I now have a lot of extra money which I am still not used to - I guess I am not content at times until all my money is gone because that is how I am used to living when I did have a lot of debt - now I am treating other people to meals etc. cause I couldn’t do that before - so I guess I just don’t like keeping too much money 🤷‍♀️😉

It really made me think about budgeting when you said your son knows all we need to know. It's addition and subtraction. Just subtract less then you add in during the month!

Hi I’m new here and have enjoyed your videos. I’m not in debt but I feel like I went crazy with spending this last year. So I’m going to take control in January. I just called my internet company and got my bill lowered by $15 a month for 1 year.

All excellent info. It is the best feeling in the world to be debt free, have savings, pay bills on time, owe no-one and can spend occasionally on gifts, dinners out vacations and unexpected needs/emergencies. 💕😍💕 Keep the encouragement coming; so appreciated.

OMG Kate, I've never heard of 'Till debt us do part'. Living in the UK England. Am totally binge watching this now on KZfaq. Wish I'd known about this show before - would have saved by putting off paying for NF lol. Thanks for telling us about it. I've been listening to Dave Ramsey on youtube and although I totally agree with some of the principles of saving for an emergency etc etc. I find this lady TOTALLY on my level and much easier to relate to on a more 'personal' level. It makes a change to hear 'if you follow our baby steps you need to do ....".

Kate I spend more money than I earn but its in investments that I will get back later at my choosing. But certainly a good point for people that live beyond their means.

I love "Till debt do us part!" And what wonderful reminder about spending only what you earn. I learned decades ago (from a story about the Mars Company--you know, the candy company) only to borrow, if you must borrow, an amount that you already have in the bank, so that, in a pinch, you can pay off the debt and not risk financial ruin. I thought that was a good plan. Seems like you wouldn't need to borrow if you have the money in the bank. Seems like you could just buy it. But if that leaves you without savings, that could not be a good idea. Now that's what I learned for when I did use debt. I don't use it any more at all except for mortgage. But for mortgage, I pay bi-weekly, so that there's an automatic extra payment a year. That saves thousands in interest over the years and shaves years off the mortgage. Great video, Kate. Always enjoy yours.

Hi, I came across this video almost two years after the fact but was still riveted. Truly one of your best, Kate, wiser words were never spoken. I'm a Gail Vaz-Oxlade fan too. She gave me the final pieces to the puzzle. It was so bittersweet to see Buns though. Poor baby. :(

A guy i worked with but couldnt stand him. Had 7 filing cabinet drawers. He had 7 file folders each drawer had a year in it. The folders were designated for every expenditure. Any thing he bought no matter what it was got a receipt for it. Hed note on the receipt what the money was soent on. Hed put the receipt in behind of the last . When the IRS wanted to see his receipts he just pulled the year they wanted folder and took it in. No looking thru shoe boxes for receipts n so on. It works.

I would have thought the “biggest tip” would be tracking expenses. Tracking helps to spend less than you make. I buy 1 or 2 “RECORD, 12 column” books at Staples yrly & it’s helped tremendously over time. Label the columns, give each a spending total & start subtracting or adding as things come up or $ comes in. I’ve tried the Dave Ramsey app & just get lost every month. This is pen to paper, easily correctable.

Kate - A video you may want to make is how ways your squad has found success in getting their partners onboard with budgeting. It's such a creative bunch and to be honest it took me years to get my spouse on board. The same approach doesn't work for every household so learning how others "approached" it might be useful. In Til Debt do us Part that was instrumental. Being a broken record with your significant other isn't going to be successful. What techniques worked? Would love to hear their ideas even though thankfully I now have mine on board.
