When I was learning to ride my motorbike I did not have anyone to teach me a lot of the basic pieces of motorcycle wisdom. So I thought I would share what I and others have learnt along the way incase some of you are in the same position.
I have narrowed it down to 10 basic tips.
1. Maintain your chain and tires
2.Ride as if no one can see you.
3. Trust your instincts.
4. ATGATT all the gear all the time.
5. Target fixation
6. Look ahead.
7. Continue to build your skills.
8. Smooth not fast.
9. Ride at your own pace.
10. It is an addiction!
Those are my 10 tips for new and returning motorcycle riders. Whether you are a dual sport, adventure, or super sport rider; there should be something for everyone.
Enjoy the vid,
COS

Great tips. Target fixation is also like distracted driving, in that your focus should always be on everything. I've caught myself fixating on a hazard ahead, and missing another hazard well within my vision. So tunnel vision is another thing to avoid. Always keep your eyes moving. Check your mirrors too (the driver behind you may also be target fixated!)

some great tips there I'm just returning to motorbikes after a 15 year break to raise the kids, never ridden off road before but just picked up a 2011 klx250s and popped on some dot knobby tyres and the usual upgrades, already wish I went for something a little more powerful but the best part is that it was nice and gentle on the trails at west moto park for me to get used to what to expect with riding on dirt, all I learned on the weekend is that sand is really stupid and wants to kill me

Well said mate, I,ve been riding bikes for well over 40yrs now! both on & off road. I have just got myself a DR650 to do a few small adventures on, As i haven't been off road in many years it will be baby steps once again? but in that 10min video, you my friend have taught me something & that is you are never to old to learn. Great advice for any motorcyclist.Who said ya cant teach old dog's new tricks.

Excellent summary. I've been riding dirt and tar for 50yrs but it's always good to be reminded of your "10 things" as us non-professional riders can get stuck in a mental rut of bad habits.

I think tip #9 is so important it needs repeating - if you find yourself in a group ride that is going too fast and too far out of your comfort zone you are far better off to just ride it out at your own pace instead of trying to keep up with the pack. I've been witness to so many accidents on group rides I know this to be true.

I know you've done well , I can say this cause I began riding since a toddler heading to the window sill where I could get my teeth into it for a better purchase to enjoy the show . A house my father built for his post ww2 prize of starting his own family in a place that they called 'Po Dunk . Where the Poor young returning veterans dunked down what they had on land in the boonies away from the city . lots of um in the fallowing years had spare money enough to afford there second love motorcycles , they gathered in our front yard furthest out from this community they built together and as I struggled to watch . Dads knuckle head he raised best he could with larger diameter rims and deep tread high profile tiers would lead the pack out by laying it over on the frame and donut until R.P.M. was high enough to stand on the elevated pegs riding away front wheel in the air . Triumph , B.S.A. , Matchless and others did there best to catch him off into the bush , our front yard . What a show , it was 68 years ago .

I'm a returning rider. It's been 35 years since I rode. Sold my 1985 honda 750 interceptor when I was in my early 20s. Now in my 50s still in good shape at 6ft 180 lbs. Bought a ktm 200xcw 2 stroke to practice in the woods behind my house. Once my confidence and skills comeback then I might consider a sportbike again. One thing that is different is that here in Canada the government is handing out licences to the huge influx of immigrants coming here and sorry to say they are some of the worst drivers I have ever seen. Thankfully I live in a quieter area of southern Ontario.

I hope you are better now after surgery. Good "solid" advice CofS. I have been riding since I was 16 and still feel like I am an amateur. But I am alive with no injury's so it is all good. You are right motorcycling is *an addiction.* EDIT - Question: Do you think your BMW F800 GS is under powered at 85 hp?
@chroniclesofsolid
@chroniclesofsolid 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks mate! Yer I am all better now thanks. Riding since you were 16 without injury is impressive! Regarding the F800GS power - It depends on what you want out of the bike and how much power you find appropriate? As single person adventure bike I think it is adequate. I bought the F700GS after selling my super sport. The F700GS makes 8hp less and It was plenty for the solo and day to day stuff. Where I did wish for more was when I was doing the two up touring. It would have been nice to have a bit more room on the bike and some extra power. But given that 90% of the time I was solo I never really needed more power. If the bike is just for you and you are not a really big guy, it should be plenty. If you are a giant or do a lot of two up adventure riding perhaps look at something with a bit more power. Everybody is different though, I see plenty of people happy with the F800 for two up duty, all depends on what you find comfortable. Hope that helps, COS

As far as rules #8 and #9 I think it depends on what your looking to do on your bike. Be a safe competent dirt rider or going mach 2 with your hair on fire. Learning to ride dirt fast, as a Adult I think is very difficult because you have learned to be safe over the years. You say smooth becomes fast, I say fast becomes smooth.. Do you crash a lot, yep and it hurts but you learn very very quickly and you end up much faster then everyone Elsa. You don't learn to ride fast on a adventure ride in the mountains 50 miles from a hospital. You learn on a Moto track and then you take all that riding skill to the mountains with you on your adventure rides. I've always said if your not crashing your not learning.. Just wanted to share a different riding philosophy. I enjoy your videos Thanks for sharing..
