I show how useful a small bench lathe can be in automata making. In this case a Proxxon PD 250E.
I show machining of delrin, PTFE, wood, brass and steel to make the small parts that are integral to a smooth running automaton. I show the parts fitted to my automata as examples. This video will be useful for anyone who is considering buying a mini lathe.

Thanks. I enjoyed your video. Nice easy presentation. About five-years ago I bought a mini metal lathe from the estate of a deceased friend. I've never used it! Now I've recently discovered automata and am looking forward to adding the lathe to my arsenal. The craft has me excited because it requires creativity, mental problem solving, and so many divergent skills. I'm enjoying your videos; you have a new subscriber!

Hi Oliver, yes I wonder how many people have been put off by using poor quality taps and dies. I now only use Volkel ones which I think are exceptional quality. I’m sure there are many other good brands but the problem is it isn’t obvious till you’ve bought them. I would certainly never buy a cheap set again even if they do cost less than a good quality single one. Best regards, Philip

Thanks for the video. This lathe is one of the few Proxxon tools sold in the US that I do not have. Hope to purchase one this year.

Hi Donnie, I also have a Sherline and a much larger Wabeco lathe but the Proxxon hits the sweet spot for most of the work that I do. It takes 10mm through the spindle so is useful for working on brass and delrin rod.
