** So let's try a cold start between the Fendt 1050 and the Fendt 724..
The difference is the Fendt 724 was just running the day before and has its batteries charged up, while the 1050 has been deep froze and has not ran in a couple months.
Temps are similar as well as the over night temps are both around the - 24C warming up durning the day. Now Mike likes his tractors but does see room for improvement 🙂

One reason for the bad starting of the 724 could be that a Deutz motor is built in. Back 30-50 years ago, Deutz/Deutz-Fahr built the best diesel engines in Germany, maybe in the whole world! All were air-cooled and also started at even the lowest temperatures. But when Deutz startet building water-cooled engines, these became worse and worse. Another reason could be, that the Fendt 700-series is the most sold tractor line in Germany, and is mainly for farmers of the European market. The 1000-series, especially the 1050, is not often sold in Germany because of being to big for most farms here. So it could be focused for the American/international market where the temperatures are lower than they are in Europe, so they engineered a motor with a stronger starter. Or MAN just builds better engines, who knows....
@hubihubertus1966
@hubihubertus1966 2 жыл бұрын
Deutz has never built the best agricultural tractor engines in the world. Because MAN has always done it. 30 years ago, Deutz was good and even very good, but MAN has always been better. Back in the years when Fendt was using MWM engines, the MAN engines used in the largest Fendts were from another world. Unfortunately, Deutz is making worse and worse engines, and I am surprised that Fendt does not use much better AGCO engines today. As for the larger starters on large tractors, this is a wrong theory. The starter is always just right, especially as winter is not a natural working time for these large machines. Where as small as 724 can be used for snow removal or auxiliary work on the farm in winter. The big ones usually do nothing in winter because they are too big.
@goodiezgrigis

10 series is sold alot in Europe also, no worries there. Deutz is like you said, great long time ago, engines up until DEF was mandatory where still ok, afterwards.... 🙄 -20 to -40 are common here in central Europe also, but it does not last as long as in Canada. Usually week or two per year, otherwise not much below -10.

Yes Mike 0-40 does come in full synthetic it’s quite expensive $250 for 5 Gallons at our CNH dealer. But we ran regular 15w-40 in our case skid steer and it did not pump the oil and it spun a rod bearing. Warranty said sorry you didn’t run CNH oil, It had like 500 hours on it. Definitely worth the extra money.

I find it funny that my old Deutz d100 06 starts to about -17c with just the key. Though that is an everyday feed mixer tractor that is stored in a unheated building. If it gets -25 to-40c just plug in the heating element in the fan shroud for an hour and then just turn the key again. The heating element has never failed to start the tractor.

Hi Mike I grew up on a family dairy farm here in eastern Ontario and had mostly JD. Tractors and witnessed difference in cold starting woes between models. To the point I work for a local feed company trucking feed to farm and commodities to the local port and elevator s and have to start and witness cold starts by Mary different makes and models to run augers to load the truck. Best starter I have seen was a TS6 130 New Holland. Started right up at -37 one morning before windchill not plugged in. Not run for a week since the last load out of bin. I fought for two hours getting the truck to go plugged in block and oillpan heater on it. Was truly amazed at how that tractor started.

Soooo. Get on the phone and start making warrantee claims for no-start when it’s cold. Do it every morning for a couple of weeks. Demand the dealer come out every morning at 20 below with the service truck and start the tractor in the cold! Have them put in new batteries, etc... etc.... That paper trail will get more attention from Agco company with the cold no-start problem.

Hey Mike: I 'd love to see that cold start competition, but before rating anything, make sure to get yourself a clam-on ammeter and go ahead and measure the amps. the tractors batteries would deliver while starting the engines. I feel like the 724 has a weak starting system, with either to small cables or batteries etc. 😥😥. The starter in the 724 is rated at 4kW, it might just not get enough power through those cables. Maybe your dealership can also help you out. 😉Thanks for your great videos! 👌👌👍much appreciate it.

Hey Mike, as you already know, no diesel will start rolling that slow. If this hasn’t been done, a load test should be done on the batteries when cold to see exactly how they are preforming in the same conditions you are starting in. If batteries are indeed good, then starter draw needs to be done. With the money you are paying for warranty, I would be getting the dealer down and get them to start it, then fix it properly. With synthetic oils, good batteries and starter it should start at -13 not plugged in.

Mike, maybe I have good news for the 1050 airfilter problem: Fendt is coming up with an automated airfilter cleaning system, while the tractor is working! The system would recognize when pollution is to much and than react with two heavy airpressure pulses, from the inside out. And at the same time a vacuüm to transport the dust out of the filterhousing. Hopefully it is designed to bild on older models as well. Although another design of air intake sounds better en more reliable to me. 🤷‍♂

Mike, regarding the oil pressure topic. One thing I have learned from building engines is oil VOLUME is much more important than oil pressure. You may have pressure but that doesn't mean everything is getting oil. Example, when it's minus 20 pull a valve cover start the engine watch the oil pressure and see how long it takes to get oil to the top. Just a guess but I'd say a few minutes of idling.
@mikeznel6048
@mikeznel6048 2 жыл бұрын
Pressure is usually a good indicator. Low oil pressure is, obviously, lack of flow meaning it isn't moving enough oil and without the pressure, it can not be pushed *UP* to where it needs to go. Especially on a large diesel where there is some distance between pump and component requiring oil.
@lesliesapp1364
@lesliesapp1364 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikeznel6048Pressure is the inverse of flow. Think about a water pump, open discharge is lots of flow no pressure. Put the nozzle on and you have restriction and you get pressure. Many modern vehicles are using a 0-20 or even 0-15. Manufacturing tolerances are so tight now running thick oil in cold temps kills your engine.

So the tractor was sold and needed a pdi and needed to come in and it was -26 not plugged in and it started competently. So this was like 07 so I don't understand what they've done to this engin.

@Mike Mitchell wonder if the 724 has a bit to weak cables to the starter? It kind of sounds like you have pretty good cranking speed for about a second. And then it drops, even when you have the charger on. It would be interesting to put a thick jumpstart cable from the positive on the battery to the positive on the starter solenoid. And se if it makes a difference.

Our 2 new MF tractors came with batteries with terribly low cold cranking amps, had to put bigger batteries in them, and bigger positive cables, now we just have them plugged in and they started -35 all the time. The old pony/starting engine technology was the best! On our place the only tractor (John deeres, caterpillar and one Deutz engine) that will start without being plugged in, starting fluid etc. is the 1952 D4 caterpillar. At below zero °F The pony motor fires right off. Engage the big engine pinion and go drink a cup of coffee. About 20 minutes later give the main engine fuel and it lights off. John Deere used starting engines on the last 2 cylinder diesels.

You should be able to use Agco parts high performance 5W-30 full synthetic oil. If not available one can use a 5w-30 full synthetic oil that complies with the Deutz DQC-IV LA specification. Almost always it complies also with the MAN M3277 spec which is for the 1000series and the MAN M3677 spec that is for the 900 Gen6/7 series with the MAN engine. This makes it a alround oil to use on al Fendt machines on the farm (Hate it when there is a oil for every engine on the farm). There is a few manufacturers that produce this spec oil. Shell, Petronas, Fuchs, Wolf oil. Will it sort out your starting issue, I sincerely hope so.

Back in the day 1980s-2000, all of my tractors, gas or diesel would groan and protest at -40F and probably more than half would refuse to start. At -4 F, the gas would start and the diesels would protest, but for the most part will start.

There is a standing order around this place. The 724 has to go inside every night during the winter.

If you lived where there is snow and ice and salt on tip of dirt and gravel roads, your interior would be dirty too. It's impossible to keep them clean consistently in the winter when your vehicle only gets used here and there. It's a farm/work/daily truck so it sees a lot of use.

I wonder if the difference is just that the Fendt 724 doesn't warm up it's intake air? And only rely on glow plugs. I know that i.e. Volvo ADs warm up the intake air. And they start pretty easily in the cold. Same with their wheel loaders. Found this info in some Amazone manual, over a sprayer with the very same engine(!? Deutz TCD 6.1 L6 / TTCD 6.1 L6). And they state: "The following possibilities can be considered by the device manufacturer or retrofitted by authorisedspecialist personnel: ..... ..... ..... ● Warming of the intake air through intake air preheating or diverting the warm engine compartment air." So I wonder if it's an option that Fendt left out. I know by experience how a faulty intake air heater can slow your progress, since it took a lot of hot air to start a Volvo AD in -18C..? But it started. Just barely by being heat soaked with +40C air for 1-1½ hour through the top of the engine.

Hey mike have you gotten to demo or are going to get to demo the new fendt sprayer? I know basically same as c series machines but with another color and the adjustable height option, which you no use for I suppose. I can’t wait to get chance to demo it hopefully. We going to see it next month at dealer but hopefully we can get it out this spring to run in the field.

I wonder if you talked to a Deutz engine mechanic / distributor they would know the right thing for it. I know our Deutz 6275 with an air cooled 4 cylinder was a horrible cold starter until we got a oil pan heater for it. Since it was air cooled block heaters weren't a thing. With the block heater in the 7 is the oil heated?
@allannantes8583
@allannantes8583 2 жыл бұрын
No not directly, maybe a tiny bit of heat will conduct to the oil pan but not enough to make any difference. Therefor the answer is no.

I am pretty sure that rather than the engine the electrical system makes the difference here. The 1050 sat for a month and deep freeze and cranked powerful and for quite a bit before it started. The 724 batteries were basically dead after a day. I would try getting a larger capacity battery with a higher cold cranking amp rating for the 724 and see if the issue is still there. A single 12V 180Ah battery might not be enough for the extreme cold climate you are in
@guzzimon61
@guzzimon61 2 жыл бұрын
Yep, 724 either has weak batteries or to much voltage drop on the cables. No way should it crank that slow after only one or two days, even at that temp.

@@mikeznel6048 all the 6th Generation Fendt Vario 700 series tractors have the same Deutz 6.1l engine and the same 12V 180Ah battery. From the 714 to the 724. When the standard battery the OEM puts in is to small you get issues like this with all of the 700 series tractors. This could be something that Fendt might be interested in, since putting a bigger battery in the tractors used in cold climates wouldn't be that difficult to implement.

Just a question out of the blue, since you have so many grain bins and fertilizer bins, how many grain augers do use on them, and, how fast do they wear out? I do know that using them on fertilizer wears them out faster. Just guesstimate.
