A lot of the big big classes in Starfleet get a lot of the attention like the Constitution, Galaxy and Sovereign but it's the workhorses that are the true heroes of the fleet. The Centaur is one of them and very successful at that. Thanks for another great video.

I always like think that every top of the line ship gets a "little sister" version that's a budget, slightly less capable version. The constitution got the miranda, the excelsior got the centaur, the galaxy got the nebula etc.

The internal volume of the miranda was also greater than the internal volume of the constitution as well Remember, there’s a difference between internal hull volume, and dimensional size due to arrangement/layout

I like this ship. Almost like the tos Era type. It speaks of like the frigates of the age of sail. Patrol, search and rescue etc. A reliable ship in the back lines that doesn't take long to build, nor require many crew. I thought it was rather like a simplified defiant class..

I have always loved the look of the Centaur class, one of the few ships that I don't feel the need to change. Its cool enough right out of the box. While smaller than the Miranda I always thought of the Centaur as their back-up. When pressed into service after Wolf 359, the Centaur would make a great patrol/scout craft. Especially with the new updated warp cores, I would assume they also upgraded the Phasers and shields as well...right?

Your videos add something Star Trek canon seems to lack, and that's design rationale and continuity. I like that you try to provide some kind of reason for the ship class designs and aesthetics, and have created an evolution narrative. I can see them pulling out old classes after Wolf-359 and updating them just to get hulls into space, but I don't see them making more of this class. It would take just as long to retool shipyards to make these guys as it would to get production going on newer classes and the newly designed ships would be far more capable with the new tech than refitting old ships. I do agree that old ships can find new life by being refit with new tech and would be great patrol and policing vassals out of internal star bases, they would also work to help maintain large amounts of experienced crewmen that can be pulled to replace those that are lost in frontline duty. New recruits have to gain experience somewhere that isn't on the front lines of a war.

Hello TAS The Centaur was a 'failure' when originally launched. But with upgrades it became a feared little Light Cruiser. Fast, Maneuverable, and Powerful, it mostly out performed ships of equal tonnage, and even those larger than a Centaur Class ship. Twin Torpedo Launchers fore and aft enabled the Centaur to fire while closing to 'beam' ranges, and again while overflying and speeding away from it's target. Having to 'dodge' torpedoes as the Centaur closed would throw off most Enemy ships from their own attack runs, only to be beamed by Phasers more powerful than anticipated once the distance closed to that range... and then the Centaur would fly past it's target and the Aft Launchers would 'attack'. Any Enemy failing to note the aft torpedoes would be hit and hit hard by such a 'Parthian' attack by the fast little cruiser. In addition, the aft launchers made 'stealth' attacks from the rear of the Centaur much more hazardous.

Okay I'm confused??? You said Starfleet choose to keep the larger Miranda and excelsior vessels over the centaur vessel how is the Miranda larger if the centaur has an excelsior saucer section and excelsior warp nacelles . Those nacelles are pretty big Miranda has enterprise type nacelles and smaller ones at that. So how is Miranda larger?

The irony with the box structure at the rear of the saucer, is that it is not only what _makes the aesthetics of the Miranda work_ and be one of the most beautifully proportioned ships, but it's also what gives the Miranda class even more internal space than a Constitution class. The Box Structure that envelopes the entire rear of the Saucer should be part of the design language of all the saucer only variants of future "heavy cruisers". The Nebula actually looks a bit gormless side on with its sloping rear, and it causes issues with the shuttle bay. It would be interesting to see a few renders of the various "Miranda replacements", done with a encompassing rear box extension of the Saucer.
@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics
@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics 2 жыл бұрын
LOL I get that you have a strong personal opinion when it comes to the Miranda Class, however I disagree with" one of the most beautifully proportioned ships" The Miranda is a very clunky looking design, which is a direct product of it's role in the fleet, while the Centaur Class is a sleek design again mirroring ITS role in the fleet!
@casbot71
@casbot71 2 жыл бұрын
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics I just like how the saucer blends (reasonably) smoothly into the box structure - to the point that it looks like a extension of the same piece. _And I am willing to die on that warp core breach._ It would be interesting to see a variant on the concept with a completely smooth transition, say in the Sovereign design style, with no angles or corners on the connection so that the circle and the box are blended … … … I just realised, that's basically a old Romulan Bird of Prey flipped upside down !¿!
@MrAranton
@MrAranton 2 жыл бұрын
@@TriAngulumStudiosAudioComics "Clunky" describes the Miranda class quite well. And being clunky is what sells it to me. The Constitution-class is the shiny explorer, the pride of the fleet, the Miranda-class is the unglamourous work-horse of the fleet. The clunkiness is what makes it look the part. The Centaur-class is supposed to be the workhorse-equivalent of the shiny, pride of the fleet Excelsior-class, but - in my opinion at least - it is too sleek to look the part. It does fit the Starfleet's golden era hybris, I'll give you that, but the Centaur class feels off when I look at it. Though admittedly that's probably more due to the context than the design itself. With Miranda-class still being widely shown on screen and the Excelsior-class being relegated into the unglamourous workhorse role with the Galaxy-class (and to a lesser extent the Nebula-class) around, having yet another workhorse-equivalent of... seemed kind of redundant. . But I still like the Miranda-class better. From an out-of-universe-perspective, I think the Centaur-class is a bit of lazy design. It's well executed, but considering we saw the Miranda- and Nebula-classes as equivalents to their respective hero-ships first, it had a " oh yeah, more of the same"-vibe when I first saw it. I get the narrative function showing the workhorse sibling of the Excelsior class had. It shows that Starfleet is getting desperate enough to put aging designs of less-than-ideal-combat-worth into front-line service, but I think a TNG-equivalent of the Oberth-class would have done the same story-wise and felt less redundant. Not saying the Centaur class hasn't earned its place in Starfleet's history, but personally I much prefer designs that don't feel like "this is that era's equivalent of the Constitution/Miranda-class". To me designs that broke that mold - like the Constellation-class, feel more unique and seem to have their distinct personality and flavour - if that makes any sense.
