The genre of horror has always been an undervalued pillar of filmland. There are so many horror movies that get released every year, and it is literally as easy as pie for some horror flicks to go unnoticed while hitting the theatres and then be simply forgotten. So, there happens to be a number of horror movies that don't get enough commendations. You can call them critically failed, ahead of their time, poorly marketed, under-promoted, or even blame them for their misleading trailers. But, these flicks are the ones that actually modified and redefined the trajectory of horror movies to a direction that they remain on to this day as cult classics. Thanks to the concept of time, of course, and diehard fans of the genre for not letting these underrated gems fall into obscurity. Today's video will bring you 13 initially failed horror movies that acquired the classic cult fame with time.

I caught it around the same age, late one night on the movie channel during the mid 90’s and I was like WHOA. It blew me away how good and trippy and eerie it was, also liked ghost in the machine, and mans best friend, but they don’t hold a candle to brainscan. It’s like a super darkened extended version of Are You Afraid of the Dark with a Hard. R rating.

I really love all 13 mentions, especially Brainscan, The Cell, The Frighteners, The People Under the Stairs, Arachnophobia and Nightbreed. Sad to know these amazing films were so overlooked in the past. At least now we love and respect them. Alien (1979) & The Thing (1982) also were met with harsh criticism though. The Cell has amazing visuals. Not many people know but they took some inspiration from Madonna's Bedtime Story music video

Totally agreed! It would be perfect for this list or even the dead zone. Mouth of Madness was shot so well from its long shots to the close ups of Sam Neil unraveling. I remember watching Thinner when I was younger. Not really a home run, IMO. I remember 13 Ghosts immediately being a "cult classic" when it came out because it was so cheesy yet simultaneously violent though, it hit a weird note for sure. I remember the last one on the list that was a little Halloween miniseries was pretty decent as a younger teenager. Another cheesy/bloody flick that doesn't get toooo gory; it kind of stays in it's lane, so to speak.

Some real gems on this list. I think "Arachnophobia" suffers from too laughable a tagline: "Eight legs, two fangs & an attitude". Makes it sound like a silly spoof. The occasional light comedy never gets in the way of the terror or compelling performances. Another feather in the cap of the amazingly versatile Jeff Daniels, with a terrific supporting cast, including John Goodman, Stuart Pankin, Julian Sands & Henry Jones. Michael Constantine should've won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for "Thinner". "The People Under The Stairs" is a great mixture of horror & satirical edge, also with great performances. Didn't realize this was inspired by real events. How ominous! "Brainscan" & "The Dark Half"-- also very underrated. Surprised this list didn't include "Spellbinder" (1988), "Stephen King's Sleepwalkers" (1992)-- King's first time writing directly for the screen, 'Tremors" (1990), "Monkey Shines" (1988), "Anatomie" (2000) &/or "The Serpent & The Rainbow" (1988). Maybe these are on other lists.

@@CashelOConnolly idk who your question was directed at but Yes I read Kabal in my early teens. After seeing Night Breed as a kid. Books are always better than the movies they are adapted from.

You could do an entire episode on the Dark Castle films. I'll be the first to admit Ninja Assassin may have been a bit cheesey but still enjoyable. Otherwise they were honestly impressive movies. House on haunted hill is a classic (dark castle version).

"360 degree turn" in reference to the plot of Cell. Doesn't that simply mean that you are facing the exact same way as you started?!??!

"Nightbreed" was CUT to pieces. I think there is an uncut version somewhere. I thought "Trick-R-Treat" NEVER got the praise it deserved. I usually don't go for "compilation" movies, but I enjoyed every tale in that movie.

You can watch the directors cut of Nightbreed on Tubitv.com for free. There are some ads, but nothing too extreme. The directors cut is so much better then the theatrical release.

A company called Shout Factory released the longer Directors cut of Nightbreed, it's definitely better, I own the blu-ray. Apparently there is some kind of fan made cut out there called the Cabal cut, it's even longer, I've never seen it.

Love Brainscan it's soo 90's with it's virtual reality concept. Reminds a bit of lawnmower man another movie I enjoy. But yeah Nightbreed such a classic love the visuals on it and I damn near wanna see a remake of it.

I liked thinner because it’s a horror / Gangster movie at times. “He was a Mook but he was my Mook” Richie the hammer! Which is great because we get to see Joe Mantegna play a Ganster which he is truly perfect for hints his voiceover of simpsons mobster

The list is great aside from House on the Haunted Hill & 13 Ghosts, that was that trend in the late 90’s early 2000’s with that style of ghosts and such The Grudge, Ring. and so on. Most horror movies from the late 90’s all the way up until recent really sucked IMO, some were amazing though The Cell as you mentioned was great, Tarsem Singh is an underrated genius and I don’t think anything he’d done really got noticed The Fall, Immortals even that Wizard of Oz show he did were all gorgeous. Exorcist III is probably my favorite one maybe cause I seen it in theater when it came out and it still holds up, George C. Scott is the man, and mentioning things seen in theaters The Frighteners is also amazing as is Night Breed.

This was by far in my top 5 vhs tapes that I would record from rented blockbuster movies! Along with NBK natural born , the doors , fear and loathing ,lost highway , all the alien movies. I used to get stoned and watch this like daily this movie deserved a academy award for visual effects and set desig. And it actually had a good plot and I was rooting for the killer. The scenes of like all his victims like on they’re cells like his barbie dolls when he was a kid, the horse getting split into slabs and u can see it’s insides still operating and the torture scene was cute I gotta see this again I ha went watched it I. Years …

Would someone please tell the scriptwriters and editing staff that a "360 degree turn" is basically a circle. If you are trying to say it takes a bad turn, or goes another way, the correct term would be a "180 degree turn". I am more than willing to review and edit the scripts before you guys film, for a nominal fee. Hit me up. lol
