We watched this today went for a walk and saw a Danforth mailbox post on the south end of Lopez. My nine year old son pointed it out and said there it is and it was lightly used.

As always your anchor testing is so good (comprehensive, unbiased, balanced, independent) that there is no point looking at other people's videos on this subject matter (never said that before). So as a consequence two things will occur... 1. I will not look elsewhere for anchor tests...saving me time 2. I will donate to your link Please keep up the good work it is excellent and will not only save people time and money but could even save the life of somebody who anchors at night

Great test. Really like the prove-out of the mud-palms. I have a Fortress-Guardian anchor with bolt on mud-palm. It would be easier to store without the mud-palms, but after seeing this test, I'll be leaving them in place!

Using a Danfoth anchor as a stand for mail box is a good idea. I have had the same problem with Danforth on hard sand. Nothing happened except for the boat drifted away. Now I have a Bruce copy, slightly better but after seeing your video I will buy a new anchor. Probably a Lewmar Excel or a Rocna. My wallet sets the limit.

I do believe that 12’ of 5/16” chain is insufficient to weigh that anchor down so that it digs in.

hello, i found your hinged design for your mast quite intriguing. Was wondering could that same concept be applied to a wooden mast? btw loving the vids, as always keep'em coming.

Anything is possible, but I believe that my "scarf joint" tabernacle design would not be a good candidate for a wooden mast due to the very high loads in the area of the hinge.

Hello I have a Danforth stainless steel anchor in the region of 25-30kg. I find it drags and doesn’t hold anywhere near well enough fit new to feel comfortable to sleep near or around other boats. My boat weighs around 9 tons sports cruiser style. I’m in need of a new anchor due to someone bending it so my question of I may is what’s a good anchor for mud sand stones bottom for a plastic boat that gets blown all over the place please?

Welding stainless is difficult. Welding cast stainless will require a lot of heat treatment.

Random question… based on all your tests and unknown size of vessel, what is the largest size rope diameter you need while at anchor? Not including the anchor chain just the nylon rope?? Thanks

Why do large ships continue to use the older style anchors? Does size matter?

I have no experience with Large ships so please view the following with skepticism. There are pobably several reasons: Large ships do not need high performing anchors (as much as small boats) because they are not affected by harbor waves, they have awake crew 24/7, they can simply go to sea in severe weather, and yes, I believe scale is a factor in favor of larger vessels. There may be a strong tendency to stick with known/certified equipment. Most ships have hawse pipes rather than rollers.
