You and Randy are just killing me. I don't remember seeing this magnificent machine on the road when I was a little kid in the 60s. It's a crying shame that American car manufacturers and so called engineers don't make cars with style and class anymore. I believe they just lack the imagination and skills that are involved in making them.

Another incredibly styled Forward Look masterpiece, created by Virgil Exner and his design staff at Chrysler! This car just glistens - when I first saw it at Back to the 50s in St. Paul a few years ago, I couldn't take my eyes off its amazing interior - the door panels, the seats, the dash with its orbital clock! Selling with a base price of $2,988 in '60, this Dart Phoenix convertible, built on Dodge's shortest 118" wheelbase, likely stickered in the $3,600-$3,800 range. And Lou, ouch!, please don't compare the features of this rare gem to a '57 Chevy! Unfortunately, numbers of '60 Darts by model line and body style are not available, re the numbers of these Phoenix convertibles that rolled off Dodge's assembly line.
@TheDejael
@TheDejael Жыл бұрын
This model, the Dart series, was given its overall shape by Exner, but the body design was supervised by Cliff Voss, echoing Exner's original designs for the Polaras and Matador series. The same design strategy was followed for 1961 also.

As the owner stated, the Phoenix wasn't the bottom of the line, the Seneca was. My parents bought a 1960 Seneca coupe new and paid just over $2K. It had the standard 225 c.i. slant 6 and the only options were the TorqueFlite automatic and a padded dash and pushbutton radio. A few years later, they had an ARA airconditioning unit added. We didn't even have A/C in our house! It was a great car with the only problem I remember was that it would occasionally vaporlock when driving into the mountains. Other than that, it never had a problem keeping up in traffic. My parents replaced it with a new Plymouth Fury III hardtop 4 door with a Commando 383 with many options. It cost $4100. out the door. People were lined up to buy the old Dodge and my parents got $500. for it and were pleasantly surprised. Remember, in 1968, you could buy a running/driving car in good shape for $100. The base 318 polyspherical V8 was a great engine and lasted through the 1967 model year. Thank you!

My 1st car was a 1960 Dodge Dart Phoenix convertible, red (vermillion) with a white top and a red interior. I bought it in 1969 when I was 17. I paid $295 for it and it had 49K miles on it. It had the 318 CID 4bbl TorqueFlite. It needed a little rust repair. My dad used to own a body shop, so I had some help getting some rust repaired and I repainted it. I drove it until 1992 when the unibody had rusted so bad that it was unsafe to drive anymore - I drove it over 110K miles and had some good times. The differences between this and mine: 1- No A/C 2- Red/black interior (door and 1/4 pads: red where the gray is on this one; black where the white is.) 3- Red/black front bench seat (red where the white is and red/black fabric seat upholstery) I replaced the front seat with red bucket seats out of 1967 Ford Galaxy XLT and built a center console for it. 4- It had upgraded O/S mirrors 5- It had the antenna on right-rear quarter panel 6- Black dashboard. This one appears to be dark gray. The hood over the speedometer reflected sunshine that blinded the driver so I painted it flat black. Also the radio knobs were different. (I learned later that some were assembled in Detroit and some in Newark, DE, and there were some minor differences.) 7- I added an anti-roll bar to the front, had dual exhaust custom made and Cherry Bomb mufflers. 8- It last had white letter BFG Radial TAs with Cragar S/S wheels on it when I had to finally quit driving it. It had a 2.79:1 rear end. It was slow to get to 60 MPH, but would cruise all day at 70 MPH. Stopping was another story - I needed a looooot of clear space ahead!

Just a note for the owner and as a convertible owner myself, one can improve the longevity of the plastic window by making sure it doesn't crease too much as the top gets lowered. Sometimes that plastic gets damaged if one isn't careful. Otherwise, it's a stunning machine... lots of thoughtful design details.

Great vintage Dart, when Chrysler had it going on. Doesn't look like economy version until the back end. Amazing that an economy version got babied and restored. An everyman's car in 1960! The seats are swell. Well done as usual Lou! (Weird green dash, wonder if the color was switched along the way, hmmm)

Lou, Great video. Beautiful car. Again another American work of art! Those guys must of had a ball with those blocks of clay in those days! Wow! Cracked me up what he said about chrome. I’ve always said when asked what my favorite color is? Chrome! 😜 I had a “61” Seneca. Three on the tree, 225 slant 6. Good job again as usual. Thanks jj

@@randyguyer Hi Randy, you are blessed indeed! What a beautiful example of a “60” Dodge. I was I was 6 in 1961. My best friends mom had what I now know as a “60” Phoenix same color red as yours station wagon! Even then I couldn’t help just thinking it was so beautiful. God bless my friend. I hope you find a girl that loves chrome! Much cheaper than gold!!! 😝

Car is Beautiful !!! Nice work, Lou. Man, not knowing much about the early '60s Mopar stuff, the 'title' made me think this Phoenix was found in pieces then brought back to life,,,,,,,hmmm, its been restored and as a convertible, could have been in bad shape. With all the lit, thankfully i don't think it was too bad. Great car !!

Those swoopy fins and the space-age dash....were reflecting how America felt about itself...we had won the big war, and were overtaking the Soviets in the space race...and after all...the Pressident had declared that we would be going to the Moon in this decade!....Chrysler had a lot of nerve, promoting this large vehicle as being an "economy" car!....Even with the slant six, you could get maybe 15mpg in general use...I think that is why most of these cars had a V8....This car had a 318 with a 4bbl, rated at 255hp...not bad!...the six back then was rated around a hundred hp less!...lol.
