Speech starts @00:14 | As the Communist Soviet (Russian) government began covertly amassing nuclear weapons within approx. 100 miles of the U.S. coast (on the island of Cuba), the world peered into the abyss of seemingly eminent nuclear annihilation. Known as the Cuban Missile Crisis, President Kennedy took a firm stance against Soviet leader Khrushchev by ordering a "quarantine" of the island (essentially, a naval blockade). But President Kennedy was not only struggling against the Soviets -- arguably, he faced an equal or even greater threat from hyperaggressive war hawks within the U.S. government and CIA.
The events leading up to the Cuban Missile Crisis included the CIA's attempted invasion of Cuba (known as the Bay of Pigs), the U.S. placement of 'Jupiter' nuclear missiles in Italy and Turkey, and the CIA's terror campaign to overthrow the Cuban government -- known as the Cuban Project, or 'Operation Mongoose'.
Additionally, the CIA plotted a covert terror campaign against the U.S. population code named *Operation Northwoods*. The attacks would be blamed on the Cuban government in order to justify a full scale U.S. invasion of the island.
JFK found himself so at odds with the rogue CIA that he said "I will splinter the CIA into a thousand pieces and scatter it into the wind". This CIA terror plan against the civilian American public was completely rejected by President Kennedy. He was murdered shortly thereafter.

I don't think people that are born now realize how close the United States came to absolute destruction. There wasn't for president Kennedy's leadership And his ability to not just answer in haste. The world came very close to a nuclear holocaust. President Kennedy may have been many things. But he should be given the credit he deserves for his achievements.

I'm old. My dad was a Marine and was they were loaded onto ships heading for Cuba. I remember watching JFK's speech, not really understanding but being scared silly worried about my dad. Thank goodness it was averted!

Thank you for sharing this. I was 7 & remember this, watching with my parents. We lived minutes away from the ADC base my Father retired from. I remember those planes taking off constantly during the crisis. I grew up fearing nuclear conflict. Some things never change.
