The flagship line of the Chrysler Corporation, the Imperial line was a very ruggedly built, over-engineered in the opinions of some, vehicle offering. This example, with the LeBaron trim option, is a remarkable survivor. Originally from Lousiana (hmm, another car featured on this channel from there!), the offering has only 32,000 miles. Emily, as the car is nicknamed, was sitting in a closed garage for over 20 years. Please see some clips done last autumn of us resurrecting the car in the way of a gummed up carburetor rebuild, and a new master cylinder. The fuel tank was replaced as well, it looked like the wreckage of the Titanic inside as it was described later on. With an oil change, and check/change of the other vital fluids, this car now graces the road once again. Being such low mileage, the car is very tight, and almost squeak free. Just one item on the passenger door has a slight squeak, that is it. The head rests were missing, proper ones have been located and will be fitted on. A factory AM-FM radio with 'Wonderbar' has been located as well. The A/C still has a full charge of R12! Tilt/telescopic steering, cruise control, Sure-Grip Limited Slip, power this, power that round out a laundry list of options on this car. What a ride, I will get my chance to drive this car some day soon, I just wanted to stretch out in it, literally. My feet barely touched the toe board the car is so big inside. And of course it is so wide too! Thank you Bill for the wonderful day spent with Emily!

Love this Imperial! This was a rich man's car back in '69! These Imperials cost a few dollars more than your deVille series Cadillac but wow! They are now getting strong recognition from the collector car world!

I had one of the same year. Mine was triple white. It had the rear seat heaters and a separate floor button to change the radio station. It was the LeBaron model with the pillows on the rear sail panels. It was a good car. I never liked the rear leaf springs though but, at 110 MPH, that car was rock steady on the highway. When I was 18, I had a chase with it by the Police. Because of the big 440, I was able to get away. :)

my friends Dad had a 69 Imperial LeBaron , same interior but the car was kind of a copper color with a black top, it was very luxurious and very comfortable. His dad bought it new and turned it in on a new Imperial in 1974 I think. I remember being impressed by the attached pillow on the inside interior panel for the back seat, you could rest your head on it, I saw it on this Imperial too. Very nice

It was a love/hate - polarizing thing with the fuselage style. The restrained style but with hints of what the cars could do really made this concept work for the corporation in the period.

spikedpunk As much as I love Imperials (and enjoyed your Imperial video), I can't help to smile a little when reading your remarks regarding separating Imps from Chrysler's. Especially as Chrysler didn't do a very good job separating them in the fuselage years, where they shared a LOT of components with the other C-body cars.. I'm on my third Fuselage 300 now, and HOPEFULLY in the process of importing a 1970 2 door... If they are much better than my 300's, I will probably "self-ignite" from joy while driving it.. as I can't imagine it getting much better. But of course, I hope to go "You were actually right" in a few months ;-)

Yes, this is indeed an Imperial by Chrysler. Thank you for that comment. It would be interesting to know something about the engine in this car, especially since you claim it to be able to get from 0-60 in 8.5 seconds. I had a 1972 Imperial and it would have probably taken a 500 HP engine to get that one to get from 0-60 in 8.5 seconds. But this car is awesome and had way more room in it than my 72' even though mine was 19-9 feet long.
@SammyVista1972
@SammyVista1972 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for commenting. The engine is a high compression 440 cubic inch V8. 1965 to 1970 was really the zenith years for performance in most big cars.They were not yet strangled with lowered compression, retarded camshafts, and other emission components. Our own 1966 Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight is just as powerful and quick. Enjoy your car!

Awesome car! I Miss my 69 Le Baron. It was Jade Green with the cloth interior. Hind-site kinda sux! As to the A/C, mine had some of the vacuum hoses come off in the control unit located in the passenger kick panel. I reconnected them and all worked well. The factory repair manuals are available from Dyment Publications. Any Chrysler dealer can get you the address. The sequential turn signals were kewl too! Mine had the electronic controller instead of the mechanical one. Enjoy this beauty!

I noticed this video is 7 YEARS old!! I then noticed the comment below was only 2 MONTHS old!! So, you're still monitoring this upload. Great! So, I have to ask the question, even though it's a long shot. Do you still have this beautiful Imperial?? I hope so, since it seemed as though you really loved it! And these great old cars deserve to be in "loving" hands at this point. Lol. I've owned several of the competitors of this same year, and by Chrysler. ie. a 70 Fury III, a 71 Fury III, and a 69(?) Newport.. I had several Lincoln-Mercury vehicles I really liked also... Back in those days, when these cars were everywhere, I was a huge "car buff"- enthusiast, and was always buying and selling cars and, driving the ones I really enjoyed, a bit longer than the others, before selling. I think we probably all end up with that "One main favorite" vehicle we have ?? Even whwn we like SO MANY! Either because of the memories we associate with it, perhaps the 'coolness' factor that sets it apart in our own mind etc.. And when you love so many makes and models, its nearly impossible to have a single favorite!! Lol. Of all the muscle cars, full sized sedans, luxury cars, and even 2 station wagons from that era that I've owned, my personal favorite would have to be my 1970 Mercury Marquis 4 door, hard top 'convertible' sedan... Lol. People that know me would say WHAT?? You're crazy! You like that 70 Marquis more than your 71 Torino GT fastback?? Lol. Well, Yes... (and no! haha). The memories and all combined, some cars simply bring us back to a time, despite how absolutely cool some other cars are! We love them all... Your Imperial is in fantastic condition, and looks GREAT!! I love it.. Just as a matter of principle, I've got to critique something about it, or advise a possible "improvement" .. The ONLY thing I would change on your Imperial, as just a matter of personal preference, I would remove the chrome tips on the exhaust. But THATS ALL I can critique it on, and thats damn good... 👍👍👍 BTW, in closing. (Sorry for the ramble!). Your car is in FACT an Imperial. It is not a Chrysler like that last comment kept wanting to argue. For those that don't know, Imperial was a car company of its own. While it's true that Chrysler later had rhe Imperial model, at this time, an Imperial WAS the make, of rhe vehicle. With the model probably being the LeBaron if memory serves me correctly... PS... Love the fact yours has got the Class III hitch on it. Don't know if tou like camping? But if so, pick yourself up a nice 70's Airstream, for a match made in heaven. Tour Imperial will tow it effortlessly, and like a dream! (Putting all those big diesel pick-ups at the campgrounds to shame as you pass them by on the steep grades... Lol)

Very nice Le Baron as I had a all white with a light beige top and leather interior. mine had the safeguard sentinel with auto dimmer but the cap for the photocell on top of the dash was missing so the option worked wrong. I could never find one and that bugged me. BTW the sequential setup went by way of transistors late in the model year as this no doubt done because of constant failures but glad to know yours is still clicking loL. Oh and make sure you check the rubber steering insolator between the steering wheel shaft linkage for wear or you may end up with no steering control no fun at 65 mph if it breaks. ENJOY!

Correct. Between 1955 & 1983 the Imperial was registered as a separate make to compete against GM's Cadillac & Ford's Lincoln lines/makes.
@SammyVista1972
@SammyVista1972 10 жыл бұрын
Yes, the division was marketed separately from the rest of the company offerings. But many, as myself, would mistakenly say 'Chrysler Imperial'. It seems the title stuck with the public for whatever reason. Regardless, they were very well engineered cars.
@charlescat9830
@charlescat9830 9 жыл бұрын
spikedpunk I believe the reason Chrysler Imperial stuck with the public was because for many years before 1955 there was a succession of Chrysler Imperials. This is true in the late 20's and early 30's. In the 40's Chrysler made Crown Imperial limousines until 1956. More importantly, in 1949 they started making Imperial sedans that were owner driven. They were one step up from the New Yorkers and continued through 1954 when Chrysler decided to make Imperial a separate marque. It is understandable that people who were used to Chrysler Imperials continued to call them that even when they were a separate marque.
@SammyVista1972
@SammyVista1972 9 жыл бұрын
Perfectly understandable and plausible reasoning given for this. Thank you for your input. Regardless, it strikes a raw nerve for some of the dedicated fans of the marque! Still to this day!
@charlescat9830

spikedpunk There are registries of motor vehicles who cannot register Imperials as a separate make because of computer programs. They automatically come up as Chrysler Imperials. Imagine owning a Chrysler Imperial Lebaron Southampton!

Thank you very much. Yes, after a bit of coaxing and cleaning grounds, the sequentials worked properly. There are a mass of very carefully wrapped up/insulated boxes over the left rear wheel well, with it seems dozens of wires going to them. Something akin to Apollo 11 (same year!). These boxes are all related to the sequentials. When working right, one hears all sorts of interesting sounds coming from the devices!

Thank you. I do tend to agree, the soul and spirit as well as individuality seems to be lacking in today's offerings of vehicles. But the fact is, there are so many more cars and people trying to be in the same place at the same time, too many crashes were happening. And some badly designed cars ruined it for everybody, thus all the legislation.

Seeing your question makes me really think about time flies by! The one I featured here is in the still same Loving Hands fortunately . Finding these cars in such beautiful condition is quite hard. Unfortunately, they never got quite the following that the Lincoln or Cadillac counterparts have seen. Sheer numbers of those produced still have quite a few floating around despite many of them being used as vehicles for demolition derby. The big Imperials have really suffered in this aspect. Many of them have been lost to that activity.. the best thing to do is to search Publications such as Hemmings Motor News, or join some Imperial by Chrysler groups. I do not know any for sale in the immediate area unfortunately. Thank you for your question.

Why no headrests on the front seats? Exposed wiring under the dashboard could get caught by your foot as you apply the brakes. Video shows a wire “stepped on” on the passenger side. Not a very good idea!

joe stihl I will pass your concerns to the owner. You are correct on the radio. It has since been refit with a factory am-fm unit. Thank you for noting the error.

That Imperial is nothing to laugh at I wish I had them from 1964 to 1978 Chrysler Imperial that even includes the top of the line 1's & 2 doors with glass moonroofs as well.

Yes, it's a pet peeve of mine. It's an Imperial, NOT a Chrysler Imperial. Correctly, it is an Imperial, by Chrysler. These are FINE cars. I'd rather have an Imperial than a Cadillac.

I know, too many, even those who really know cars, always said 'Chrysler Imperial', which rubbed my fur the wrong way. I never bother arguing. The Imperials were, for their bulk, very capable road machines, outperforming in handling a lot of contemporaries.

An Imperial deserves respect. If you are going to ride an Imperial, you should dress properly, I mean coat and tie.

Gustavo Arguello The car is respected aplenty. It was saved by a caring family and now being enjoyed by their son and being taken to.many shows. The heart and soul.of a being is the true dignity of a energy. A suit and tie is mere material addition. Thank you for your input.

Well I actually prefer my good Italian friends alive and well, as do they themselves. I am sure a lot of people could fit in the trunk, alive and well to just see how many could fit in there.

YOU ARE WRONG, SIR. It is a Chrysler Imperial. These fine cars were only Imperials from 1955 to 1966. They were, in fact, CHRYSLER IMPERIAL from 1926 to 1954 and from 1967 to 1975 and all models in the 80s and 90s. Thank you

It is what the world has come too unfortunately. They (the new cars) may be safer in some ways, but when they break, it costs a fortune to fix them.

"Imperial" was, to Chrysler, what "Cadillac" was...and still is...to General Motors. You don't have 'GM Cadillacs' and you don't have 'Chrysler Imperials'. You don't have 'Ford Lincolns', either.

Your wrong it is a Chrysler Imperial! Imperial was not its own make in 69! Read the badges and owners manual!

Imperial was on its own from 1955 to 1975! Chrysler just started to lose hope with the Imperial make and started to blur the distinction between Chrysler and Imperial! But it was still a different division up until the end!
