Thank you for posting Greg, that brings back memories. I do know that Blue Bird actually brought that old style door handle back, it was avilable on the 2008 Vision. Nice bus, will make someone a great vehicle. If I had the money I would purchase it in a heartbeat

Sad that this was 13 years ago, no more S series Schoolbuses on the road anymore. My first route bus was a 84 international blue bird 77 pass with the 9.0 diesel and 5 speed with 2 speed rear end. Loved driving it

Yeah well they are still out there. I used to watch these videos in replay as a kid our family has a large school bus company and I’ve grown up all my life to this day around buses some internationals some blue birds a lot of Thomas an old Wayne or two and a bunch of t444es and now Cummins Detroit and Mercedes diesels used in the older Thomas buses

the 1980s International buses I rode in back in the mid 1990s were Thomas versions. They had the 6.9/7.3 IDI diesels and most were AT545's but were 5-speed manual versions, with air brakes. In the early '90s, the brand-new body style International buses now became Blue Bird versions. Brings back memories!

This old 86 has an automatic? The school board where I'm from here in eastern Canada didn't purchase automatics til mid 2000s. All were mostly international with 444 and 5 speed with a few ford b700
@bgasales4 жыл бұрын
Many schools were running all automatics in the 70s. I know one school that started buying them in 1969. The oldest bus I have personally owned with an automatic was a 1959 Carpenter 72 passenger forward control coach from Jackson, Michigan. It had a 302 six cylinder that got 2 mpg, and a 100 gallon fuel tank. They knew!! This Carpenter bus was built on a GMC chassis. It came with a 4 speed Truck Hydro-matic. The shifter was patterned like the old Pontiac Bonneville and Star Chief. N - D - 3 - L - R In L, you had 1st and second gear. It was a very quick shift into 2nd, and you often couldn't even feel it. The transmission was designed to have slippage in 1st and 2nd. The bus would not creep forward when in drive. Reverse was all the way down, just like on many GM cars back then. I started kindergarten in 1959. I think my school had some automatics even back then. We had a couple of women drivers, and they got automatics. The men got 4 and 5 speed manuals. My school had almost all Chevrolet Superior buses, up to the time I graduated in 1972, There were 2 Fords with Wayne bodies, and 2 Internationals with Bluebird bodies, and 12 Chevrolets with Superior bodies... all the way through high school. I have always been fascinated with school buses!! Busitis... a disease.

Back when each bus chassis had different types of engines, buses nowadays use the Cummins I.S.B or Detroit DD5
@bgasales2 жыл бұрын
Or the ISL Cummins. OR gasoline engines, propane engines, natural gas engines, or full electric. Bluebird uses a Ford-based engine. Thomas and IC use a GM-based engine. The Ford is doing better, from what I am seeing.

These old 9.0L diesels were as fuel efficient as it got. You could run flat footed all day long and still get 11 mpg. I had one, once, with a 5 speed transmission and hydraulic brakes, a 72 passenger Superior, that got 14 mpg. These engines were truly the best fuel mileage engines I ever saw in a bus. Detroit Diesel called their 8.2L a Fuel Pincher. These 9.0L Internationals went 2.5 or 3 mpg better than the 8.2. Your comment shows that you never owned one.
@dieselpower46653 жыл бұрын
I have been in 2-4 different international 9.0l buses growing up and i will say 11-14 mpg is poor and bad compared to 25mpg cars gasoline some diesels can get better mpgs than what you have listed. I never owned one 9.0l and i am not planing to as it's old and parts are gonna be very hard to find. They have other diesel trucks that are better than this 9.0l international.
