2 ways to setup a Mooching Rod & Reel for Downrigger Trolling

In this video Captain Marc walks you through his Mooching Rod combos and how he sets them up when running flashers as well as a straight spoon. He also includes a piece where he talk about how to connect the monofilament to the reel spool using an Arbour knot.

Great video Marc - one thing I do slightly different on my charter on southern Lake Huron (Blue Line) is the length of the leader. I like to add about 150-200 ft of leader. The reason is I run sliders. I found that the slider sometimes would catch the knot and twist around causing a bit of a tangle. Naturally if there was a fish on, it would take the slider over the knot without a problem..Its just when you are changing a lure it seems to catch on the knot most times. At the spoon I also use a Kreh Loop knot to the small swivel to give the lure more action. I'm going to spool up my new mooching reel today. Nice videos!

I have a couple of ABU-Garcia Diplomat 420 reels from 1980 that I like to fun fish for salmon with. Affectionately known as knuckle busters especially for the unaware.

Good video, eh?! I want to try my mooching outfit for our Pacific Northwest Springers, and Fall Chinook. I think it'd be a blast!! By the way, Ande mono is one of the readily available mono brands here in Oregon, and Washington, probably also in California, and maybe even B.C.
