This is a common oil leak on the 2001-2005 Honda Civic, but this also applies to most B, D, H, E, F series Honda engines as well that are distributorless, since this plug fills the hole where the distributor was on older engines. In this video I will be replacing the plastic cam cap plug on my 2001 Honda Civic that has a 1.7 non Vtec engine. The process is similar for other Hondas. Here is a Amazon Paid link to the part you will need. Genuine Honda 12513-P72-003 Cylinder Head Plug amzn.to/3SLY6S5
Alternate Link Beck Arnley BEC039-6558 Engine Semi-Circular Plug amzn.to/3sG7v2W

For everyone that replaced the camshaft sensor and the car still goes on limp mode how to fix it. Keep driving the car slow for a week or 2 so the ECM learns the new sensor and then it will drive smooth. A puzzle that kicked my ass. I bought the TDC sensor from Napa for $67. Now I drive the car about 200 miles daily and has no issue at all except for the oil leak from that plastic cap. Thank you for the video.

Yep. Thanks for this clear and concise rundown. Mine has gone neglected for a while; there’s a bunch of dirt and oil running from the plug down to the transmission and oil pan. The OE part is in the mail. My ES1 has seen a lot of abuse but the engine is still happy and healthy. I’m gonna give it a good scrub so it’ll look as good as it runs.

Got some advice if say two of the plastic clips snapped off when being removed and are probably still inside? Hypothetically.

It was the valve cover was missing a screw and the oil pan, never again going to an oil change place. Cost me 1200 since December just for mechanics to overcharge me for stuff that was simple!

Do u think since I park on a slant everyday after driving, leaning forward the passenger side, it’s possible for small amount of oil to leak threw the cracks since I’m on a slant?
@ratiquette
@ratiquette 7 ай бұрын
Not unless the car is sitting on its side. Oil doesn’t sit in the head when the car is off.

Can I remove the part with the 2 bolts right above it to get it out if it won't come out with a screwdriver?
@Xpired_PCP
@Xpired_PCP 4 ай бұрын
Yes. For VTEC 1.7L, that's your EGR in the way. You *can* try to remove it and install it with the EGR in place, but it's much easier to remove it

Is it correct the EGR was already removed. Just saw a different engine block in a video and it had that part right in front of that plug. My civic 2001 European also has that EGR. Noticed Mike started drip a on the floor and noticed the block was wet in the same area

The previous owner of my 2002 DX put a non genuine one in the car, and it's stuck in there. I bought the genuine part and everything went to try and get it out with the flathead and it wouldn't budge. Then I realized that the one that's in it is more rubbery then the plastic of the genuine one. Any advice on what I can do to get it out so I can replace it with a genuine one?

PCV VALVE is the cause. Replace that first.
@JackofAllMasterofNone
@JackofAllMasterofNone 7 ай бұрын
A bad PCV can cause seals to leak on an engine for sure. But that isn't what is going on here with this part. The Oring simply gets old and flat and doesn't seal anymore.

@JackofAllMasterofNone Great tip! I keep my wife's EP3 Honda and noticed seeping and did the PCV VALVE first and cleaned the areas, and held my breath. The EP3 leaks at the VTEC solenoid O-ring. Great video and good information.
