Finishing touches and reinstalling the engine into the truck, plus a simple mistake that caused a lot of extra hours of labor.

I'm still working on it. This truck has been a can of worms. I am worried that I set the timing chain with #1 piston at the bottom of the compression stroke rather than the top... So, more videos to come. I am determined though

@@MechanicalMike Everyone makes mistakes. That's how you become experienced. I'd be lost on a job like this.

Nowhere can I find information on the valve cover tightening sequence. The Haynes manual as well as the factory service manual state to just finger tighten all bolts then torque to 105 in lbs. No mention of order and given how prone these things are to leaking, I was hoping this may be a video/series that may delve into it. Don't suppose you have any insight to offer on this aspect, do you?

Hey Mike, did you get a different set of heads for this engine?
@MechanicalMike5 жыл бұрын
Yes, remanufactured heads pre assembled with new valves and cam shafts. Old heads were totally chewed up.

4.7 is kinda small for a Durango with mud tires. I’m gonna see about swapping in a bigger one,5.3 or5.7 perhaps.

I totally understand if you don't want to say, but how much has you rebuild cost? I (regrettably) purchased a Dakota with a knocking 4.7. I am weighing the cost of rebuild vs reman. reman engines are around 3,000, but I am afraid I will end up with close to that if I rebuild it myself. any idea would be of huge help to a poor mechanic!

I believe I have around $1600 into the rebuild. It is cheaper but I have run into multiple issues and since the tolerances are so minimal on this engine, I would have had a lot less time and energy into it had I bought a remanufactured engine. I'd say take off your heads and see if there is any damage in the cylinders. If you don't have to do a lower engine rebuild then I would just buy remanufactured heads and leave the rest as is. If you need a total rebuild I would recommend buying a remanufactured engine. It will be worth it I. The long run

Thanks! I definitely have a noise in the lower end. either a rod bearing, or a wrist pin. loud noticeable knock around 2000 rpm. So I know I need at minimum a crank kit, head work, and all related gaskets and parts. possibly machine work and pistons also. I am leaning towards a reman from advance, about 2800. Thanks again for your reply!
