HOW TO, DIY
Useful links down below.
A video on how to deal with seized clevis bolts. There is an OME lift install video which shows how to remove the struts and assemble the struts in the configuration you are going to use here • HOW TO: Jeep Grand Che... . I found it helpful to use a paint-marker to mark the full length of the back of the struts, springs, and top plates to make it easier to get them back together with everything facing the correct direction. Definitely attempt to remove the clevis bolts a couple days before you go to do this job and order the bolts/nuts if they are seized.

PB Blaster is your friend. I did the struts on my XK yesterday (300,000Km) with no issues. Hit all the clevis bolts with the juice twice a day for 3 days in a row and they unscrewed and pulled out of the bushings easily. 3 hours total working by myself.

I used a sledge and an impact gun 13/16 on that clevis bolt not 21mm. Went forward and reverse and it came out after maybe 12 each direction. That was after quite a lot of sledge hits first. But no heat or saws needed. Just persistence.

Another thing that comes in handy when putting it back together is a can of neverseez or similar antisieze compound as it prevents bolts and other parts from rusting themselves together.

Wow... I ended up using a 4-foot pipe wrench to grab the clevis bolt. In the past 3 years of hindsight and videos I learned that I could have put a 4' pipe, onto a 2-foot breaker bar, that should have worked also.... Having to take the time to cut through that... God bless you this how I would have been mad mad pissed

Honestly, on my '08 WK I found that using an oscillating tool with a carbide metal cutting blade (buy 3 or 4) worked very well on those clevis bolts without much risk to the CV boots or clevis arms... Glad you got it out though! P.S. Use plenty of antiseize on the bolt shank when reassembling! (avoid round 2) The bushings can be replaced with a ball joint press, if you have one. Once you get past that bolt, everything else is a cakewalk.

For the new views. Hit what the ball joint goes through or use a pickle fork. If you separate the upper lower and tie rod end you can remove the knuckle with bearing on it. Take your time and make sure the abs wire will be free from the car before hand. I threaded on the upper ball joint but a few threads to help catch the knuckle so I can slide the cv axel out as I pull the knuckle off.

The clevis bolt seizes on almost every one of these WK/XK platforms. The rubber bushing has a metal sleeve inside, and the bolt body rusts fast to that sleeve. Cut the bolt, replace the bushing. It's pretty common. You can get a new Mopar bolt, part # 6503047, from Rock Auto for around $7.

Still trying to hammer out the clevis bolt. Dame it's a bugger. No luck yet. The problem is the clevis support is springy so there is no solid support to take the full force of hammering from the nut end. The clevis / strut assembly is springy. Some sort of a press would do the the job in 5 seconds or less but I don't have such a tool.

If you would have taken the vehicle weight off of the control arm, the clevis bolt would come out with a couple hard hammer blows. Maybe there is a jack stand somewhere we cant see but the fact that the whole vehicle was on that bolt being supported by the jack seemed pretty sketchy to me.
@SteveRivett
@SteveRivett 4 жыл бұрын
I had 2 jack stands on each side as I had the wheels off. One at the cross member and one just forward of it. I have not gone through the entire video for a while but I would not have used the jack during the job unless it was aiding me in some way, never to hold the vehicle in the air. I had a coworker get killed at home when a vehicle came off a jack.

No - the clevis bolt on those WK Jeeps is notorious for welding itself into the clevis. I was fortunate to get one of mine out in only about a half hour, the other side I had to cut through the bolt on both sides between the clevis and the control arm like was done in this video. I then spent most of the day beating on it with everything I could lay my hands on, heating it up with a torch, etc. I finally took it to a machine shop, and it took them about 30 minutes of going to town on it to get the last remaining portion of that bolt out of one side of the clevis. I could hear them wailing on it back in the shop from the front. I was amazed they only charged me $20.

@@FrankO-ek1ec The front rides a bit rough with the original stock springs because the 5100's squeeze the springs to get the 2" lift (preload). The rear is a bit different too because axle sticks out on the drivers side. You get a little wiggle when you go over a big bump because the axle swings towards the passenger side. I believe Jeeperf makes an adjustable link to fix the way the axle sticks out...maybe others do too. I intend to replace the rear springs because they can't carry much weight. @SteveRivett
@SteveRivett 5 жыл бұрын
I put a wrench on everything and did it by hand afterwards. With a long bolt like that I prefer to hold the bolt end steady and crank the nut down (plus the nut is bigger and you have a longer wrench). I prefer using impacts for removal only unless it's something I can't get good leverage on and I know I can't break like the front differential bushings. Do all the tightening for bushings with the vehicle on the ground or it could cause weird ride behaviors.

Really disappointed to see you just throw your impact and electrical tools into the dirt. Good way for them to be ruined. If you had spent a little time soaking all of the bolt threads with PB Blaster or other penetrate, you would have been able to get them all out without cutting. You can do this job without removing the yoke complete. A little more prep and protection from the ground would have gone a long way to helping you out.

Where did you get your two inch lift for the rear?
@SteveRivett
@SteveRivett 4 жыл бұрын
I got them from a guy called "Kolak" on www.jeepforum.com If you send him a message he can set you up with the rear spacers. I think they normally come in a bigger kit from Rough Country but he splits them up so that you can use 2" lift struts up front and spacers on the back.

Chrysler absolutely fucked up when they designed these pieces of crap. I have a 05 and the lower strut fork bolt is siezed just like this one. Spent 5 hrs beating and heating the piss out of it, to no effect. I did all four shocks on my 03 ford half ton with no issue. It's simple, and straight forward. Jeep on the other hand has a complete garbage front end on the cherokee, no other way to say it. I'll let someone else do this job because I'll have a 12 pound maul shoved through the engine block if I keep trying.

Stephen Rivett Just one issue is when you loosen the top ball joint, NEVER take the nut all the way off until your ready to separate it. While you were taking nuts off other bolts the spindle could have come to lose from the ball joint allowing the spindle to smash you in the face. I saw it happen twice sending both guys to the ER. One lost his left eye doing it you're way, the second had a broken orbital socket and required surgery. Another thing you allowing the brake caliber fall has broken many brake lines. That's something that's common sense. These are just two of several things you did wrong. I agree do all you can and avoid the extremely unjustified high cost of a shop, and you absolutely have the right to do whatever you want to your jeep. My problem is you make a video doing things the wrong way and others try it your way and end up getting hurt or screwing up their jeep. You should do a disclaimer stating this is your way and not exactly the correct way to do things, before you get sued when people get hurt after watching your video. If you are going to make a how-to-video, make sure do it the right way so people don't screw-up their car and/or get hurt.

I put anti seize on bolts where the bolt contacts the metal in the bushings not the threads in hopes they won’t seize up again inside if I have to take them off again. Thank you again!!

I appreciate the video and it mostly has the steps required but I am somewhat pissed it skipped over the ABS sensor removal / electrical disconnect. Your not gonna be able to get the clevis bolt to spin move the jack so it's lifting the jeep not the lower control arm, put a small jack under the control arm, remove the nut, raise or lower the small jack to take tension off lca, screw nut back on a few threads, use big hammer to drive nut out.
