Just watched this because my gf’s beetle pass window wasn’t working. I hadn’t even started troubleshooting yet, but decided to see what others were seeing. Went straight out the the car after this, and found the same white wire broken in the same spot. Will be ordering a new harness, but for now my gf is happy to have a working window. Nice find!

It's a good feeling to figure out what's going on with whatever you're working on, I know from experience to suspect the door harness and you had the additional clue the driver's side switch was not working, now you know great video you've helped a lot of people by sharing this

Good job finding the problem. Anytime I suspect the door harness, for this situation I use a bulb as a load to see if the wire will carry current. As soon as you had two different readings on that wire I knew you either had a bad diagram or a bad wire🙂

Awesome. Got a 2008 Jetta with drivers window same problem. Like the previous tech I ordered a motor figuring it was the source and should be the problem but, maybe the broken wire issue creates a communication gap between the modules causing my issue. I will report back. UPDATE: Tore into the door this evening to find my red and yellow wire broken in my harness. Ended up having to pull the outer door skin to access the harness properly to make the repair. Once complete the drivers door and power mirrors came back to life. Sadly I have a used window motor coming that's no go to me now. Thanks a ton for posting this video.

Great video! I've been through the same headache :D That taught me always to check the door harness of all four doors before even starting to measure anything if it's something associated with doors and 99% of the cases it's a broken wire(s).

Nice. I just recently had a very similar problem with a 2014 Kia Soul (rental vehicle) with the drivers window motor. I did the same type of checks you did except only with test light. The Soul also had a data wire that went from the drivers window motor to the bcm. I didn't check that one wire because I was too lazy to pull out my crappy scope. Scanned the bcm and had no codes. So that being said must be a faulty motor as switch wiring checked out from window motor to switch. Replace motor and it worked for a sec or two and stopped. At that point I was thinking about that data wire, but rechecked the switch wiring, again fine. And thought this car is too new to have broken door wiring. Came to find jumping the data wire from the bcm to the window motor the motor works. Found the connector leading into the vehicle from the door to be damaged under the boot from likely a poor collision repair. Replaced the drivers door harness and vehicle was fixed. I feel your pain, but you had it worse with a more intermittent case. Nice find! Thanks for the video. I wish I could force myself to start producing videos too!

Hi Tom Thanks for your video most helpful my Wifes 2008 Beetle developed the same fault thanks to you i went straight to the problem inside the rubber gaiter their were 6 broken wires! I do not have sofisticated equipment as you have I just sodered wires in and Bingo it worked!

Interesting to see, even though there were only two visibly broken wires, the insulation on several more wires was cracked. From there it's only one overzealous move with a power washer away, before water gets in there and produces the green crusties. Never seen car wiring do that before, chafing, yes, breaking inside the insulation, also yes, but the insulation cracking on anything that isn't 50-60 years old, no. Good catch, even though, if the remote switches never worked, your colleague started on the wrong side of the car, imo.

Glad you got figured out. Nissan Power windows (auto up and auto down feature) also use LIN the only difference is that the module is the switch it self. Great job!

Thanks my friend, awesome vid / troubleshooting. Wasted days trying to fix my neighbor's 1999 Beetle. I am on my second driver door harness but still have same intermittent problem. Alas, I bought a used harness from the junkyard. I have seen insulation flaking off the wiring inside MB side view mirrors, insulation flaking off the wiring inside the BOSCH headlamps on the Beetle and engine harnesses on Fords I worked on. Looks like even 'name brand' auto manufacturers are using Chinese suppliers ... to our detriment. This just does not happen with wiring looms that are properly cured and that use sufficient amperage wires with good connectors. What is criminal is that VW know this is a problem and they want to charge $450 for pn 1C1-971-120-F. I can also state, unequivocally, that this 1999 Beetle has the poorest quality (cracks to the touch) plastic that I have ever seen. Again, ridiculous prices for replacement interior panels. Will dive in again tomorrow and let ya know what I find.

I am here following and learning due to the ever awesome Scanner D, Ignore all the VW is bad comments as this is and has been a common type of problem on ALL makes since the late 1980s, even before door modules, the drivers door window switch could inhibit RF window switch activation, and broken door flex joint wires at that location are still common, Thank you for the video work i am gratefull. Great job bro. VW wiring is horrible. My heated seats werent working because of a bonnet harness wire breaking near the hinge. All 4 wires broke to heated nozzles which are apparently connected to the heated seats.

I have one here in Australia hurting my feelings right now. Very depressed over it all. I suspect your video may help me diagnose mine a little easier. Must find a wiring diagram! Mine is a little more complex being a cabriolet. At the base of the A pillar on the drivers side (rhs) I only have two plugs, a blue and a black. I had two wires broken in my door jamb loom area which I fixed but it hasn’t helped. Drivers window won’t work, which results in the top not working and the key fob also doesn’t remote unlock/lock/raise/lower windows. Keep your fingers crossed for me! And thanks for the video explaining your troubleshoot techniques

I know there was a settlement on the mk5s Vw decided to remove 3/4" off the door harness for production to save money, have fixed many 2005-2010 ish vw door wires, always look there first easy to pop off the rubber seals and check, look for even a bulging wire about to pop

I was screaming at you to check the network on the driver side. LOL. when you said you didn't know if it was supposed to do anything I was like yes it is cause i have never seen a network not have some sort of square wave on it. Great video.

Wonderful fixing the broken LIN wire

I have an 07 here and both sides aren't working. Switches have no voltage. But main unit has voltage and ground. No broken wires. There were a couple almost broken wires I repaired, but one was speaker so that don't count. I've tested continuity on the wires going through the door and they all have perfect continuity. But both sides aren't working. Kinda think its the main module.

Sort of got the same problem except no power to the switches on driver's side. Haven't figured it out yet. I know with the key they'll both go down and up.

I have a 2000 beetle i have Comunication error for the window motor for the right and left side but the left window works but the right window doesn’t . I found some broken wires on the driver side door harness so fixed it but still the pass. Window wont go down or up. What is another things that i can check. Any help will be helpfull. Good to know about the time out on the slave mod. As far as the wire in the door, if you think about how many times that door gets opened and close and it being on the hinge, I will have wondered about that as a weak area before. Danner do you fine the hinge area there to be a place you find problems a lot?

great vid, iv had similar problems with the lin network on Volvos.........I have 8 of those wire piercing clips along with a double matco md146 front probe kit I use to complete the broken connection like you have there, one on each end of the "broken" and connect a 4mmm banana lead to both to complete the circuit. quick fix see if you even need to go any further....the leads included in that md146 kit are 4mm banana (male) which connect to those piercers....just a quick tip if you have someone on the upper end waiting for an answer every 5 min!!!!

Hahahaha sometime it's so basic , but when you work on other complicated vehicle repair , you overthink things on the easy ones. Good thing you can return the new module I hope...thanks bro . I was going to say check the fuse make sure it wasn't moved 🤔. Just busting your chops...

Awesome video! Do you have to relearn the window modules if you replace it. I ended up changing the motor and module. Now it works only until the power times out. It will only work again if I unplug the connector and plug it back in. Also the passenger side stopped working with the new module and motor. I did find the main red wire broke and the white wire broke in the drivers door harness. When I plug the old module and motor in the dome light comes on and the passenger switch works on the drivers door as it should. I think the old module is damaged to run the motor. Is there a way to link the modules back together? Thanks.

I have a 98 NB the drivers door will not work. I replaced the head liner and when i put it back together I fried the control module operating the doors. Question can I hot wire the drivers electric door to operate? I'm only worried about the drivers door. It will only be used to and from work.

I don't see much videos where autor makes mistakes, but we all know that hapens and that in my opinion makes very good - realistic video. Many time it's like ''My guess is...'' and they are magically always right. It's boring because at the beginning where they say ''I think it's...'' at that moment I know it's gonna be ''that'' and it's less interesting to watch.

I have an issue door electric wise on a 2002 Beetle. Window regulators on both doors are new. I have continuity from end to end on the driverside before I plug the harness into the female plugs near hood release. The following does not work: No window movement both sides no noise no nothing. Doorlock: the power mirror switch is making the driverside lock make a click sound. Mirror not working, The lock switch not working both sides. working: Gas-hood release. Light on driverside door button, courtesy light is the only thing working on the passenger side. Im missing something...help if possible?

Dude I’m having a horrible time with the drivers window 2009 beetle hard top no sunroof. My drivers switch will put passenger window up/down but drivers won’t work. The relay clicks in the module but nothing. I’ve tried several motors/modules all same problems. Any idea?

There's a TSB for that its the torque for the motor. Last time a checked.

I have the same issue, Jetta 2013 2.5L. I have the issue is power window, horn, cruise control all sometime fails and sometimes it all starts all at same time. Delearship already charged me approx 270 for dignostics and they said it might take more, all they could find is something data bus error or something. I don't know what to do.

vw door harness have been shit since i was and apprentice in the early 90s

I was pritty early on thinking it's near the master the driver door opens and closes most often so more likely to have damage. I do wonder if the right hand drive vehicle got the master on the passenger side most probably .

Wow!! A broken wire, in the drivers door, caused all of that frustration? Why would it work for a little bit, then quit?? A backup, possibly? Just in case, kinda thing? As far as replacing the door harness, I can't speak as to the reasoning, cost, ease of repair, or the like, but if one wants to repair ones own vehicle, without the cost, replace the broken section only, with a one step larger wire, and from further into the door on one side, and further into the passenger compartment on the other, and in a point on each end that makes fixing the wire easier, and then just thread the new, one step larger wire thru the door, rubber elbow, and into the kick panel, and then on to where it's easier to fix it!! The quick way would be to attach the new wire to the broken end, then pull thru to your easier repair point, then guesstimate the length of the other end, and cut it and attach it to the other end of the broken wire, and pull it thru the kick panel to the easier repair point!! You have to attach two ends, now!! But in an easier location on both ends! You will thread the new wire, in exactly the same basic space, with a tiny bit of effort (MOST TIMES)! And using a one step bigger wire, will help insure that repair doesn't come back to you, in the future! And it only increases the wire size a negligible amount!! Adding a wire connection into the elbow in the door jam opening doesn't make for a neat repair, a repair that is likely to last, and greatly increases the size of the jumble of wires that already broke!! Not to mention that it is almost impossible to get into that area comfortably to work! I saw this trick on another KZfaq vid, and want to give credit where credit is due! flmmaz. You can search on there if you like! He has a vid about like this one, where he chased a bug that was broken wires in the elbow, and he pulled the seats, and console, and carpets, and all, just to find his suspect junction was intact, but in the middle of the rear area, under the console!! That actually helped in the end tho, where he was searching for a power seat issue, also!!

I have a 2008 Beetle 2.5, I replaced a broken driver side window regulator and a window motor, but the motor works only like 2 or 3 times and than stop working until I disconnect the battery for two minutes or so, and reconnect it again and than works again for another two or three times again. what do you think it could be??

Yep, driver side door harness with broken wires, normal VW problem. Long time VW wire problems in doors and at the hatch even back with the 70s Rabbits.

Just a question here... is it possible that the loadpro could of found this problem with the corrosion? Ghost voltage ?

It is the same designe on vw caddy but it is not diagnosticable system
