After coming back down the Macclesfield canal (which I didn't film, as it was exactly the same as going up as shown in prior vlogs, albeit in the other direction), I turned south and retraced my path along the Trent & Mersey until I got to Stone, Staffordshire. There I'd booked the boat into a dry dock for re-blacking. This video shows that process. Yes, this is where Minimal List had theirs done too :-)
Location: goo.gl/maps/vJZEkKaZNrS2rBzZ6
Filmed in the last week of October, 2019
My previous blacking video: • 126. Blacking my narro...
If you're interested in two-pack epoxy blacking, Kath & Anna had theirs done like this; see their video here: • 2 Pack Epoxy Narrowboa...

Amazing the way things were done in the past and still done today. Too bad you have to do it every 3 years. How much does it cost each time? This was a very interesting video, thank you!

I was thinking of an American water seal compound called ‘Linex”, we use this to waterproof the bed of a Pickup truck, pretty good stuff as it literally forms a bonding seal on the metal. I’ve heard it being used to protect the outside of a van or truck, and so far this material has passed even the most stringent of all testing by outdoors adventurers…. Its also expensive…..

The processes you need to go through to keep you home "ship-shape" are as much of a pleasure to watch as the cruising of the cuts. It is your love of the complete process that makes watching your vlog series such a pleasure - from the cheese sandwiches to the cassette emptying stops that make your episodes so enjoyable.

Greetings from Australia - I stumbled, quite by accident onto this channel a month or so ago. I now confess to binge watching the entire series and I am absolutely hooked and fascinated by theses videos and I have learned so much about a culture / lifestyle that I didn't know existed previously. David is the quintessential, polite, dry witted, engaging and charming English gentleman. Apart from the boating content I always smile when I hear old school "British-isms" like Jolly Well, Jolly Old etc. (That is not uttered too much down here these days lol) This bloke is one of the most informative, entertaining and likable hosts on KZfaq. .......Bring on the 2020 series !!!

Have to say David this was a really interesting vlog on the technical aspects of the "original" canals engineering. Watched the vid three times (simple addiction) before it dawned on me that the understanding and exploitation of hydraulics was rather clever. No pumps to empty the dry dock or fill it. Just gravity and exploiting the difference in height of the water levels. Using the dirt ( stove ash?) to seal the stop boards by using the water pressure to take the sinking ash to where it was needed was an easy and cheap way of keeping the water out. The stop boards themselves obviated a lock gate, hinges and paddle mechanism with the consequent maintenance. Obviously couldn't say when the concrete liner when down but having the gutter to deal with any leakage was clever so blokes could walk on relatively dry concrete and not be sloshing about in puddles. Even the lintel (from an oak?) saved having to build an arch, not to mention money. The overall construction reminded me of the open boat yard docks found in the Arsenal at Venice. Whoever designed that dock and system was really quite clever with no unnecessary fripperies and doodads, or expense.

David, your videos are just a delight to watch. and while i was watching this last one, i would like to sugest something to your consideration.. I been looking for good video documentaries about the UK canal network, its history and most important landmarks, and i cant find any relevant material regarding that in video, professionally made, i was thinking....., you are an experienced journalist, and anyone who been watching your KZfaq Channel for a long time (like i been doing) can clearly see that you are a Very competent and good good one at your job, your videos are just a delight to watch, i wonder if you could, if you have enough time spare; it would be, of course, a project without an ETA, you would do it on your spare time, if you would consider, or at least think about doing a documentary movie about the UK canal network, no matter what others might think, we know, and You know aswell, its one of the most amazing engineering projects that makes UK unique all around the world, its part of the UK rich culture and patrimony, how important it was for the country in the far away past, and how important it is still today, not only for the people who narrowboat and live the life, but also for tourism, i believe there are alot of people from all around the world who travel to the United Kingdom in their summer vacations and rent a boat just to live the experience, there is a market for the Movie you would make, you could go all around it, explain why the canal network was built in the 1st place, talk about its history, its landmarks, (i have seen, thank to your videos, bridges and places that have plates with distant dates on it like the 1800's till the 2000's, and its just...outstanding.... and also explain how to rent a narrowboat and tryout, or even the steps to become a narrowboater, and you could even make an agreement partnership with the Canal and River Trust as a documentary movie professionally made about it would benefit them aswell (very much $$$, actually, specially them) and they would for sure be very interested $$$ in it aswell, if you know what i mean, its very good business for them..., i doubt there are many journalists of your rank and caliber living the experience, you own a vast galery of very good video footage already so you could also use it... I dont know if you are aware of the interest of the world about the UK Canal Network and the Narrowboating lifestyle, its unique, David, there is nothing like it nowhere.. only the UK has something like this.....its part of the country patrimony, and its not seriously and professionally documented in video yet....for the CRT it would be very good advertisement, they would get more funds and support from the government, its part of the UK culture and proud history...I can tell that i been talking about your channel and i share your links to many of my friends and even work colleagues and everyone loved and are probably watching your channel now... Alot of people, not only in the United Kingdom and the US, Australia, all Commonwealth and beyond would pay for a documentary like that, I live in Portugal and i would pay good money for it and I Will buy you a copy from it if you do it (from you or from amazon, CRT webpage or wherever you put it at selling, there is no seriously done doc about the subject available anywhere, nothing made in the 2000's that i could find at least.... And just think about it please, you are a superb professional, and you can see and present the both sides of the picture.. the one from the professional journalist and the public in general, and the one from the random narrowboater, the person who lives the lifestyle at the canals 24/7... who else can do it better than you, my friend..? Think about it, it would be tremendous...and above all.. it would be a service to Great Britain...

Hi. Glad you like the videos. Such a project would be a monumental task especially for someone working on their own. It would also be very expensive and would prevent me from getting on with cruising as I see fit and doing the vlogs. There has already been an extensive series on BBC4 called "Canals: the making of a nation" which discusses the history in great detail, perhaps this is something you might be able to locate and watch.
