Poor bugger only came in to get the dust wiped off the dashboard...and now he's getting half his car rebuilt or replaced! LOL - I bet inside Pauls head he's thinking ''how much is this all going to cost, and will I have any money left to complete my touring?'' I reckon Mike, that you should go find a pot from your kitchen and present it to paul, cos at this rate, at least he won't be left without a pot to piss in.

I have some information regarding why Land Rover stopped using the Salisbury 8HA axle. In the early 2000's, part of the tooling used to make the axle broke, meaning that no axles could be made. This affected many manufacturers such as DAF, Volvo etc., not just Land Rover. I only know this because my Dad used to work for Whale Tankers in Solihull, and for a while you couldn't get lorries because of a shortage of axles. However, the "upgraded" Rover axle being cheaper probably meant that they really weren't bothered about going back to the Salisbury axle, and frankly, if it lasts longer than the warranty period manufacturers don't tend to care.

the true spirit of land rover is coming back - continental crossing - some "minor issues" with the landy - making up a plan - fixing it by throwing things together from other vehicle - and it might be better than the original one - sounds like in the top aera of land rover in the 60s and 70s - who cant just loving it. if i understood it right paul is doing the PAN-AM, let me know. i sent mike an email anyway, fantastic videos, thumbs up

This is how repairs should be done, you dont get this kind of service from main dealers, its all new replacement parts or nothing, very wallet thinning. ---- OH!!! the speedo head that I bought from you in the Sunday sale arrived yesterday ( Wednesday). It was very well packed, so there are no problems with it. This video is amongst the best yet Mike, Good luck. Thank you. Yorkshire Rob.

@@BritannicaRestorations Yes Mike, manys the time that I have bought a wagon from the block because the owner could not afford to pay a repair bill, then I would fit a 20-year-old. part that was only slightly different. Ford were the worse as they did not like to pay out for new tooling which meant that some parts were used for many years on different models. As you say.£$^£$£$£^

@@BritannicaRestorations Good thinking on the salisbury axle, though I have a question, what about the ratio of the rear vs the front? Can they work together? Thanks & keep going.

I remember my Salisbury jamming a rag in between the crown and pinion teeth and turning the crown and it comes out of the housing without a diff compressor,swapped out the drum brakes to disc which the brake pipes are different sizes on the disc brakes.

Mike. It would've been a lot cheaper before the global pandemic to buy a whole pre-'02 Defender with a much stronger Salisbury rear axle mista ? The short nose rear differentials are a weakness in 'Puma' Defenders ! V.

An awesome plan Mike. Cant understand why LR replaced the Salisbury with the inferrior Rover diff...
@petermenzies1714
@petermenzies1714 Жыл бұрын
I suppose the only real advantages of Rover/P38 Diff over Salisbury is improved ground clearance and that it is a self contained unit & easy to ship & bolt in. Setting up pinion depth & carrier pre load with shims is a pain if you don’t have the reamed out bearings or spacer like you have. Xcess 4x4 build, repair and upgrade diffs too, not sure if they have any Puma ones ready to ship tho!
@nickboylen6873
@nickboylen6873 Жыл бұрын
This might seem more daunting and may even cost a little more than the replacement diff and gears, but the axle will be much stronger and should provide much trouble-free exploring in the future. I’d not trust the HD P38 diff, regardless of who built it; you can peg the ring gear and fit gears with coarser, thicker teeth, but you still can’t make the pinion long enough to prevent it skewing or putting excessive loads on its bearings.

The Ashcroft HD diff was a longer nosed casting needing a shorter prop

How about installing a grease nipple on the flanges Mike ? I’m thinking on the side of the flange and getting JP to turn a small grease grove into the bore. Paul seems like he’s diligent with the grease gun so they should last indefinitely… and if he does snap a half shaft, well he’ll only need that. Just a thought.
@BritannicaRestorations

The only downside to this idea is that wheel bearings need air space You should never fill the bearings more than 75% with grease Also, any excess grease can find its way onto the ABS reluctor ring at the back of the disc
@bigal5932
@bigal5932 Жыл бұрын
Yep I can see your point. I suppose they would have to treated like prop sliding joints any greased conservatively.👍

I had my gearbox refurbished from ashcroft. It had nothing really wrong with it only second gear crunch, now it whines like mad. Never would I use them or recommend them.. and I hear that alot in the land rover world.

Mike, have you been taking lessons from the Pakistani truck repair shops on KZfaq? They can weld axles etc, but they'd have just welded up and angle ground the smashed teeth on the pinion, save a bit of work, piece of cake. I'd have just dressed up the damaged teeth ends on the pinion put new bolts in the ring gear to Carrier joint and dug out the bolt head that way caught in the ring. Probably go a reasonable distance, maybe dye-pen check the pinion and ring teeth, but it was still going around after all the shrapnel was through it. It would have probably kept it going until the new Ashcroft parts arrived. Seems you're taking the long way about.

Mike, are you thinking TD5 (pre-P38 diff) rear prop shaft because of the longer nose of the Salisbury? But the Defender TDCi transfer case sits 70mm further back than previous Defender models? or does it just work out to be the correct length?
