What's the point of having a cribbage match video if one can't adequately see the score and the player's cards?

Needs higher resolution. Use a camera and upload from the memory card. Don't use a phone.

My father was a merchant marine during WWII. They played cribbage to pass the time. Of course, he didn't bother to teach me.

Damn, they can count their points in an instant! I've only played a few rounds with a friend, and we still need time to process our hands, me more than him.

Well seasoned veterans count points instantly. They have seen many combinations and patterns long before tournament play.

Most players count their hands as they decide on cards to toss in the crib.... but as a courtesy, I usually count out my hand after the play.

It's interesting the cards played stay face up the entire time. I flip mine over when restarting the count from zero.

This does look a really fun game, I’m hopeless at the minute but in the process of learning. I play a lot of poker but looking for a bit more of a relaxing card game, was thinking of gin rummy too.

@Matt Owens I gave up in the end 😂 just learned some different poker variants instead, currently playing more Omaha-8 than Holdem at the moment. Problem with Cribb is it’s hard to find a money game, and I don’t really enjoy cards unless a bit of money is riding on it.

How in the world can people play cribbage without beer or brandy? Or is the beer off camera? Cribbage is mostly a wintertime game in the north, we play it in taverns and out in the ice shacks while waiting for the flags to go up on our tip-ups.

Correct, yes, as you would after a round in any card game to ensure variability in the cards dealt, not just in Cribbage.

My wife and I are just learning Cribbage. Question: at 4:45, after he says “go”, she immediately pegs 1. Is that how he knew that she had no other cards that would make the count not go over 31? He played really fast after she pegged the 1 is why I ask.

Yes as when a player says Go it implies they have no cards to fulfil the count to 31, if the other player (Jeanne Jelke in this case) also does not have the sufficient cards, being that she was the last person to play a card at all, she just gets a 'last card' point as a go. similar to how when the players run out of cards, whoever plays the last card gets one point. If you look at the male player’s hand before he says go he has a Jack and a 10. These are both worth “ten” she lays a 5 taking it up to 27. He effectively is bust. You are not allowed to go over 31. So the other play keeps going until they get to or as close to 31. They then score from that.

I am super new to Cribbage, but I think of it as the 2 you get for thirty one is really 1 for last card, plus a bonus 1 for making 31. Feel free to correct me.

Scoring 31 implies laying the last card, so you only get 2 points for 31.

Couple of years ago I got 3 5s and a jack then turned up an 8. Very next card in the deck was the other 5 (same suit as jack). Aargh. Anyone ever got 29 here?

Not in the American Cribbage Congress. They must offer the cut.

2:09 I've always played without offering your opponent to cut the deck. If you do, your opponent can call you out and take a point. If they take it and cut, you call them out and take the point. Pretty much everyone I've played with has been aware of this. Is this not a legitimate rule? It's always seemed pretty scheisty to me, but it's mainly a laughing point.

You are first point seems like a local rule. In tournament play it is mandatory to cut after the shuffle.

when I was taught, you lose your crib if the opponent cuts the deck, but this is probably a rule they made for the competition.

Good to see this match but IMO needs a lot of production work. (A) Paper cards? Really? Paper cards can be easily marked, even if unintentional. Plastic cards all the way! (B) Upload in higher quality. 360p??? 720p minimum. It is not like there is hosting costs for KZfaq. (C) RFID cards. I am not sure there is RFID software for Cribbage. It would not be a far stretch considering there is Omaha support. (D) In lieu of RFID, the players should be required to show the camera their hand. It is not like Texas Hold 'em where a player might want to keep their hand a secret. (E) have a 3rd camera focused on the board so we can keep track of the score by doing a PIP or split screen.

@@tiberiu_nicolae A friend of mine from college (20tlh century) was a piano major and showed up for a side-by-side piano lesson in short sleeves. His female teacher told him it was highly inappropriate. Students and teachers were expected to wear long sleeves for lessons according to classical music etiquette.

Jim Carlyle official rules require that the dealer offer a cut. You don’t get to take the crib or lose two points. The no cutting house rule is a holdover from the “gentleman” days when offering or taking a cut was considered an insult to someone’s integrity.
