The 2020 Auto Expo now seems like it happened a long time ago, and it was there that we saw the updated S-Cross. The pandemic, however, delayed the launch by a fair bit. It’s now finally here, though, and we’ve driven it. The big change is that Maruti’s ditched diesel power and will sell the S-Cross only with a BS6-rated K Series petrol engine. Some might see that as an important move, but with 105hp and 138Nm, is the S-Cross still an option worth considering? And has Maruti bolstered the S-Cross with enough to keep it relevant? The video has all the answers. Let us know what you think in the comments!

Nope, fall flat. With KIA Sonet entering in this segment, I feel hardly S cross will have any chance..Still brand loyals will go for S cross..

I’ve been following PD since PTR days. Nothing’s changed whatsoever. Same honest reviews and same interesting concepts. I honestly don’t understand how you guys do it. I seriously decide on purchases, based on your reviews. Initially I used to think of PD as Desi Top Gear. But nowadays, I hardly follow Top Gear, thanks to you guys. I still remember getting my first bike, the CBR250R after watching your CBR250R vs Ninja250R shoot out. Thank you guys, for raising the standards of the Indian automotive reviewing.

S cross has a wonderful chassis. It was hell of a car when it came with that 1.6 mjd back when launched. As i see it indians dont promote great products from maruti suzuki - like old baleno (sedan) .. kizashi... and now s cross 1.6 diesel.

I think you are spot on when you said it is incomplete. Since this being their flagship model with so much space and comfort on offer, I would have expected some bells & whistles as a part of the update. First and foremost, a 3rd passenger head rest in the rear seat to up the comfort level considering it's wide and can seat 3 comfortably. Second, they should have give an option to have 6 airbags as per user discreation. Third, rear sun blinds for those large windows, fourth and more importantly, a sun roof for the top variant at this price point. Fifth and significantly, a turbo petrol engine to back what this vehicle deserves. I think these are some significant changes I would have expected along with some changes in the interiors esp., on the dashboard and a rear USB charging port.

The review was awesome. This is what we need in today's busy world. A short, sweet, precise, and accurate presentation. You included every imp and major point in less than 4 min which some other people can't convey even in 20-30-40 min video. Nobody got time for that super lengthy boring stuff showing the working of each and every freaking small buttons. Coming to this car, All major Specs are somewhere between average and below-average level, Which is disappointing considering that it is a Flagship Car and what it used to be earlier with that awesome 1.3 and 1.6L diesel engines. I think Maruti folks need to understand that if you gonna keep the identical engine for all diff segment cars (Eartiga, xl6, brezza, ciaz, s-cross) you should at least do some tuning as per the needs of diff segments. I will certainly not put my money into this. XUV300 or ecosport are better options. I think. Peace.

Reviewers like Raunak are the best compliment to PD videos. When the video is in-your-face and vibrant (like most PD videos) , a subtle and classy reviewer is way better than a jumpy reviewer who keeps prancing about. Love your style, Raunak!

Hmm ... Personally, I feel it ended fast. Maybe that's all worth talking about this Car. But I love that you guys are nitpicking and straight to the point. And Raunak has evolved gracefully since his debut days on PD.

The car is meh.... The review however, is amazing! I like Raunak's style of reviews. Makes it really interesting! Won't be buying a scross in its current avatar even if I had 10 lakhs lying around. But watched the review coz its Powerdrift! 😎

I remember when I test drove my first Automatic in 2006. A Hyundai Santro with a 4 speed AT. I am now twice as old, but Maruti’s gears have remained the same. No way I’m buying this archaic Tin can for almost 14 lacs on road. I can only wish that Maruti Suzuki actually listens to what people want, not just throw a mix and match of their existing assets and expect people to buy because it is “MARUTI”. BTW, they’re not so cheap on maintainance either these days. Loved the review. I like how PD puts the point across without hurting Suzuki’s sentiments. Hopefully, this will ring a bell with MS.

Tons of mistakes in your judgment. This car has a torque converter 4 speed. It gives decent mileage and the gears are longer(as is the case with 4 speed torq converters). Is it quick?nope. But it's nothing like the 4 speed in your old santro. Next, "tinCaN" the previous gen scross (called SX4) sold outside(which is identical to the one sold here) has a euroncap rating of 5 stars, this new model has a 5 stars Asean ncap rating. It's definitely not unsafe like the usual

​@@pranavp386 well you cannot compare a DSG with torque converter. 4 gears seriously?? Maruti needs to up their game. I have driven the XL6 with same gear box which was sluggish and very noisy. I would any day prefer a dual clutch system. however agree to the point on safety. its not about the metal sheet on the outer side which people keep naming it "TIN-CAN" safety is all about the structural rigidity and the chassis is very strong. In fact maruti qualifies for pedestrian safety norms where a person or animal will not die when knocked down. a safety norm. Also as an owner of both maruti and volkswagen. it's surprising to see maruti billing me more for service than VW. yes Maruti has more service points but the service quality is very bad. The car will come out of workshop with more problems post service. I think TATA these days is doing amazing job like NEXON. would prefer that over S-cross.

@ Ashish There are many who also put value to peace of mind, predictability and reliability. Assurance or service and spares is pretty important for long term ownership,which most Maruti buyers are. Besides one has to also know what one wants. Do I want a host of electronic gimmicks that may not really be needed and be potential niggles for the future. Do i need a dual clutch transmission that over heats in city traffic and will put my vehicle into limp mode or is so complex that proven long term reliability is still a major problem. Do I need a Turbo-petrol where turbo lag is a pain in normal city driving or gives terrible fuel efficiency in crowded urban driving circles. Do I need a BS6 diesel engine with complex DPFs or additional ad Blue requirements when my running is not all that high. Is a natural aspirated petrol engine with its linear power delivery and proven reliability better for my practical needs. Is the number of gears in TC important or how ell it is actually integrated in the drive train that matters. Scross has decent safety ratings, yes it could do with ESP, more air bags, better instrument cluster and updated auto box. But as a cross over( NOT CSUV) it still is a very good and sensible vehicle to own. But yes, I will agree with you that Maruti should not take their customer loyalty for granted

The gripe I have with Tata is that they have 0 experience designing and engineering engines and other drivetrain components. Combine that with their very small market share and a history of really bad cars it will take a lot of time before they can gain some trust. Suzuki's have been running all over the world reliably for over half a decade and are known to be as dependable as a Toyota. They are very barebones but that's also why they have cockroach reliability and at the end of the day, that's what matters.

Honest review. Maruti has to realise they are battling against the likes of kia seltos , hyundai creta , tata Nexon , xuv 300 ,ford ecosport powerful engines good gearbox combination. Also doing innovative design. From brezza to s cross 1 petrol engine and a not updated gearbox cost cutting has its limits, may be they should start lossing the market badly to realise the same.

Maruti Suzuki should really plan on slapping a proper AMT Gearbox to its premium vehicles like the SCross, Brezza etc rather then a CVT. That is the only reason I got a manual Ciaz. When budget Maruti vehicles like SPresso, Celerio and all get an AMT why should customers in a segment higher be made to suffer with this 4-Speed CVT?

Good Review overall touched all the points of driving dynamics of the car. Raunak is too good with car reviews with his style of presentation. One thing, although we know nothing much has changed in the S-Cross but it would have been nice if we could see few shots of the interior too.

Quick first drives always leave us short of breath in the hustle to get all the shots we can manage in the limited time given to us but be rest assured that the interior looks and feels just the same as before and that’s not a bad thing at all since the S-Cross always has better quality interiors than other Maruti-Suzuki’s offerings.

Nice review Raunak and team ! Disappointed with the new update on S-Cross. IMO 1.6 was one of the finest cars launched in Indian market. Sad to see MS itself is killing the name softly !

It’s pretty hard to impress Baldy McBalderlust with supercars let alone regular ones. The S-Cross is still pretty likeable though, Maruti-Suzuki definitely needs a new automatic gearbox for sure.

That intro hits so much harder now. Wish it had all come true. Roads are closing down, people are going back into homes, and we are slowly losing more lives each day. Sigh. . 🥺 Also. . This baby needs a long overdue powertrain update with refined looks and internals. It's turning into Honda w.r.t bike segment 😑 complacent

Loved this car when it had (1.6) with 320Nm, adjusted myself with (1.3) with 200Nm, But Going down to 138Nm..? Ee humse na ho paai!

Those were diesel motors. This one's a petrol. Very different behaviour.

Where is the location of this test drive? MSIL should have changed the steering atleast with a flat bottom type they give in the XL6!!!

A lot is to be learnt from MS...this also includes how to kill a wonderful vehicle slowly. I still remember the sheer pleasure of driving the first gen S-Cross 320...Boy oh Boy...320 Nm! This one surely isn't going to get a place in my garage!! But the entire presentation...Less said is better!

For sure, that 1.6-litre diesel was a stonker albeit the massive turbo-lag and I too wish it got more power as the car progresses with updates in our market. Thankfully, the quality levels have been retained.

Hey PD, I have driven the car 3 days ago and I did not feel anything for the car, I am in the market for a car to replace my 2010 swift diesel, my heart and mind is pulled towards venue or sonet, either of them will be my next car.

Jeez, tell me about it man. It sure works but even a 5-speed would not only make the engine more frugal that it is, it’ll also be be able to sprint harder than the lethargic pace that the 4-speed manages.

Where do you see 10 speed automatics on a 10L car? 4 speed Torque converters work fine for most applications. It's certainly no enthusiasts gearbox. But it's going to be very durable under bumper to bumper traffic(unlike DCT/AMT) and is going to respond better than a CVT. As long as the ratios are fine, the gearbox will work fine.

@@pranavp386 yes! I second that about the price range. Everything is fine, but comparitively the ease and tractability is a bit dud at higher speeds and hence the ideal cruising speed is compromised.

MS severely sabotaging the wonderful chassis the scross has.. and mediocre level of features.. mediocre engine and gearbox.. :-/ (gosh it's my fav car in their line up but with this set up there is no way it's going in my garage)

Quick look video is cool, just like raunak, I think maruti needs to step up the game and show everyone why it enjoys about 48% market share. New generation thoughts are quite different and maruti isn't catching the pulse.

This is the only engine Maruti Suzuki has right now. MSIL is just putting it into every car that needs a petrol engine, and man that 4-speed Torque Converter automatic gearbox, it is just plain comedy. Even the icing on the cake is : 2 airbags at 12.48 Lakhs ex-showroom.

Noisy? Is this engine noisy really? 4 cylinder naturally aspirated engine is refined one as so many explained. Also this engine is not underpower too. its not like turbo charged cars which has that spirit for fun too drive nature. This engine is for linear power output. This is a Best car in maruti's portfolio.

Under 100 bhp for a car like scross .... maruti Suzuki has missed it completely... it is going to get breathless on highway and ghat sections... even nexon comes with 108 bhp for smaller car and less price...

The car seems way too pricey for the amount of power and features it has to offer. You might as well buy a sonet or a seltos at that price and get way more features and a bit more performance .
