Manufacturers like Volvo and GM seem to have designed their cars to "slide" off the small overlap barrier to reduce occupant acceleration but VW and most of the Japanese brands just fully engage it and hope the high strength steel will protect you. Even if injury measures are low in this test, there's a lot of forward excursion of the dummy which wouldn't bode well in a higher speed impact
@Fadic4
@Fadic4 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve seen brands like Honda that have been designing for this test for a while, in the MDX you can even open the door after the small overlap test. But there are benefits to both, the ones that slide off, can lead you into oncoming traffic in some instances or even hit another object. It’s a tough call to choose which is better, it will depend on your accident and location

@AnalogueKid2112

@@akj2387 you'll only be going ~15 miles per hour, so a lot less likely to cause injury. Secondary crashes happen, but it's a smaller percentage of overall crashes, especially dangerous left of center ones like this test simulated

There’s no hope in these test. The OEMs know precisely how the car will react. To the millimeter.
@AnalogueKid2112
@AnalogueKid2112 2 жыл бұрын
@@steveam29 that’s my point though. It appears many manufacturers have engineered their products to pass this exact test, rather than when variations inevitably happen in the real world. Contrast that with Volvo’s approach of protecting occupants as best as possible in any collision, even those without a government or insurance test. Check out their run off the road test for example.

IIHS doesn't perform full barrier tests for our ratings program, though we occasionally perform demonstration or research tests using a full impact. We run a moderate overlap (40%) test on the driver side and a small overlap (25%) on both sides of the vehicle. NHTSA does run a full barrier test.

How do you guys obtain cars to crash? Does the manufacturer send out cars to be tested? Are they bought by IIHS?
@iihs-hldi
@iihs-hldi 2 жыл бұрын
IIHS purchases our test vehicles at local dealerships. In some cases vehicles can be "nominated" for testing by automakers in order to get them prioritized. In those cases, IIHS still locates and purchases the vehicles but the automaker will reimburse the cost of the vehicle.

thats because of the load limiter. You can see from the top view the car at one point slowed down quite violently, and the load limiter is just there to smooth out the impact. If it didn't let the seatbelt out that much then the chest could've been hurt

Jesus there's basically no crumple zone in the narrow overlap collision for the ID4! Peak forces on the dummy must be comparitively very high
@nickbien
@nickbien 2 жыл бұрын
Actually they aren't because the seatbelt and airbags work well together. Theres not that big of a crumple zone because they want to maximize interior space, and have a better turning circle.
@rlc2978
@rlc2978 2 жыл бұрын
@@nickbien Okay thanks! I just saw the forward motion stop abruptly when the barrier impacted the A pillar and noticed dummy's head snap back on impacting the steering wheel through the airbag and jumped to the high peak forces supposition. I guess seeing as the space under the bonnet isn't open to the cabin they could still put some deflective or energy absorbing structure in to stop the A piller being all there really is. Clearly the structure os strong enough to take the impact but not convinced the soft tissues of us occupants are quite so robust. Seat belts limit the loads to the torso - the head is unrestrained though and keeps going..?
@nickbien
@nickbien 2 жыл бұрын
@@rlc2978 If the head did contact the steering wheel, I think IIHS would know because at one point there would be a sudden force on the head. One car that IIHS said the head contacted the steering wheel is the model s. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nLOTqMx30q-1hKM.html The model s had the same problem as the id4 but I would say the id4 still performed better because it decelerated more than the model s before hitting the A pillar, and the head and body didn't move as far forward. And in the id4 the front wheel got out of the way immediately which helped there be less intrusion inside. The head is "restrained" by the airbags cuz thats what airbags r designed to do. Would a "deflective" structure be like in some Volvos? kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gcCBabd7lda-eZs.html

when will you start making the barrier crumple because it’s kinda unrealistic that the barrier is a hard wall that doesn’t crumple, results on cars that did a poor in this test probably would’ve gotten a good or acceptable if the barrier crumpled and wasn’t a hard wall..
@iihs-hldi
@iihs-hldi 2 жыл бұрын
The moderate overlap front crash test barrier does crumple. This test, however, is designed to replicate striking a fixed object like a pole or tree. A crash test can't capture every scenario in the real world, but are designed to replicate the forces that are common in real-world crashes.
