Traded in the 2019 for a 2023 and it's a nice upgrade. The transmission tuning in the 2023 is so good and Sport + rocks! The variable exhaust is nice but doesn't get too much louder - just some mild rumble.

Brian, would love your thoughts of the two extreme ends of the compact sport sedans - This Vs the Type S. Both are super innovative. I'm hearing the Type S is significantly bigger but shrinks when you drive hard and a bit slower, steering might be better. The G70 has 50-50 weight balance and longitudinal engine. So exciting to have these new entries.

Great review! In your opinion, how would you rank the new G70 compared to a BMW M340i xDrive? Are the driving dynamics of the BMW worth an additional $10K+ (similarly equipped)?
@BrianMakse
@BrianMakse 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Erik! Glad you enjoyed. These two are very different and I can see how BMW can justify that price, assuming spec for spec. Plenty of sound mechanical reasons. It's been a while since I've driven M340, so I have limited recall of that drive. For 99.9% of drivers, however, they won't care about the extra bits that make the BMW more interesting from a dynamic perspective, but rather they will care about the badge. In terms of driving satisfaction, they're on par.

Brian, check out the rear of this car and the 2006-2010 BMW M6. It's very similar. Nice car! I drove the last gen and this one has improved the front so much. I'm probably the only one disappointed with Genesis on this one. The exterior refresh is indeed awesome, but they didn't give us the full digital dash like we kept seeing in Korea, it still has the same cheap rear view mirror and stalks. Also you have to pay an extra $10.4K for the "launch edition" whatever that means to get the red interior. FYI my wife drives a 2018 G80 Sport so not hate just my honest opinion. Other than exterior in my opinion the exterior still falls behind the rest of the line up.
@BrianMakse

The Launch Edition is $2k more in Canada. In which market does it cost another $10k? To be fair, G70 is a low volume product now that the SUVs are here and will move buyers over from other brands. I don’t think it needs to be bleeding edge. The replacement certainly does, however.

The Sonata & Elantra have the upgraded frameless rear view mirror and stalks yet their luxury sport sedan don't.? It's a fun car to drive don't get me wrong. Had one as a loaner while my wife G80 Sport was being serviced, but the only real upgrade is the exterior. The interior is not on par with the new G80, GV80 or GV70. @@BrianMakse Hey, I drove this on some of the mountain roads in San Diego county a couple of weeks ago. This thing really handles twisty and tight curves very capably, despite its weight. Drove the same stretch of road 3 times, the first two with the traction control on. The car did not bite me after I turned it off, which was nice. I like it on a mountain road as much as the 2020 Civic Si, which I traded in to get the G70. And this one doesn't push as much when accelerating through a curve.

@@BrianMakse Hi Brian. Thanks for answering me back earlier this year. So, since the last time we chatted, I have switched away from the staggered set up, and gone to a square set up. 19 X 8.5 wheels all around, and 255 35/ZR19 tires, high performance all seasons= Continental ExtremeContact DWS06+ . The replacement wheels I got are 20.5 pounds, which is 13-15 pounds lighter than the original Genesis wheels. So, the car handles better, had a lot more cornering grip at the front when I drove it on canyon/mountain roads, and the rear end is a little more tail happy, since the rubber I put on is not as sticky as the original Michelin PS4 tires. The car feels a bit more lively this way, and definitely more enjoyable to drive. These all seasons also ride better than the PS4. Why would Genesis start the car from the factory with a staggered setup? In addition to less grip at the front with the 225s on, you cannot rotate the tires front to back with a staggered setup. A bit more expensive over time. Any ideas about why they did it this way, other than that is what the equivalent BMW and Mercedes sedans had already done?

Compared to the current Stinger I'm afraid the G70 hardly rates the terms "redesigned, refreshed, and reinvigorated. Specifically, the closely related Stinger replaced the somewhat anemic base 2.0L 4 cylinder engine with the 2.5L turbo that's now available as either standard of optional in at least 8(!) KIAs, Hyundais, and, yes, Genesis models. The G70 on the other hand retains that same 2.0L engine. The G70 is a fine automobile but retaining the old 2.0L engine is hardly a sign of "reinvigoration."

I have to be honest, I don't like the refresh. It doesn't appeal to me aesthetically. First, that crest grille is yuck. The split headlamps are inelegant (they should stretch around much further). The pre-refresh G70 looked much better. And I miss the fog lamps. Second, I like that the pre-refresh G70 could be mistaken for a Bentley or Aston Martin. Borrowing aesthetic sensibilities from other brands is a Good Thing. Third, the rear end of the refreshed G70 is butt ugly (pun intended). The pre-fresh G70 looked much better. Fourth, the refreshed gauge cluster, which is half physical and half digital, is unappealing. Make it all-physical or all-digital but *don't* do half and half. (The blind spot imaging could've been placed in the center display.) Fifth, I liked the boomerang side vents on the pre-refresh G70. They gave the car a unique look. The refreshed G70 loses that uniqueness and could be mistaken for any other Genesis model. The 2022 G70 is still an excellent vehicle but it'll never get the same kind of love from me as in the pre-refresh G70.
