After it spun off from Volvo, the Polestar brand has quickly established itself as one of the more interesting electric vehicle companies in the world.
Owned by Volvo and Geely, it gets to benefit from the knowledge of established brands, while operating like a startup. And its Polestar 2 - the first all-electric model from the brand - shows what happens when you mix startup flexibility with established auto company values.
Thanks to www.polestar.com/us/spaces/po... we were able to borrow a Polestar 2 for a few days to put it through its paces.
And we were very impressed...

danke schon guys for the upload, i literally just got back from Volvo Polestar Princeton (NJ) taking a test drive me self. the salesperson set us up with that same color blue with the Performance Pack and the Ohlins (yes please 😎) although i had a more basic fabric interior sans woodgrain. i DID however see one on the lot with that woodgrain/tan napa and it looked nice but that was more the wife's preference, personally i prefer darker interiors so as to hide wear, dirt, etc over time. the ride (to me anyway) was GLORIOUS but admittedly i lean towards "Germanic" Sports Cars type handling. was not harsh or bumpy at all, but then i ALSO like the Model 3SR's ride/handling (ref, suspension bits model after BMW). the 3 has it's faults for sure, but ride isn't one of them, as such the only BEV beating the 3 on ride currently IS indeed this Polestar 2.

This is my best EV driven to date but I have not yet test drove the Porche. Their salespeople at the Fashion Square Mall in Scottsdale AZ were very knowledgeable. They were quick to point out this is Polestar 2 made in China and not a Volvo or Geely. They pushed the brand Polestar similar to what Genisis is doing.

Hello! Excellent Video, I also line the dialogue with the chemistry a lot. Not really a critic but something I thought about while watching: I liked the part where winter explained the situation sitting in the back and the wierd intrusion of the roofline. Yet a lot of car reviews have a shot where you see a person in the back sitting from the side and the space in front and above plus the position of the front seat. I assume its in the position for winter? I just got used to have this information on every car and I like it. Another thing: I feel a lot of EV reviews lack a bit of information on the driving feeling. You touched a bit on it but it felt a bit vague. Maybe it is a focus I have on reviews which is not general but questions I have on every car: Steering: Is it fast? Is it precise? Oncenter play? Does it communicate the friction to the driver? Damping: How does it handle short bumps like potholes? Is it more like an old merc, where it whafts 3-4 times after the hit, or is it more like an bmw for example, where it tries to settle as fast as possible? How does it handle bumps under load(weight or cornering)? This is the only electric car I am aware of where you can choose the dampers. They are adjustable ( Rebound and compression I suppose?). What does it do? How does it feel? Tires: To they communicate their griplevel? What is the balance of front to rear? What size are they? I know those are questions which matter more for sports cars. Chris Harris recently said something interesting about a lot of people coming back to him and saying that his videos influenced their buying decision and wondered why this is. I guess it shows that people are interested in it, even if they don't have a use for the information in their real world application. Just my thoughts, since I feel you are always interested in opinions. A great review, I enjoyed it the most of all of you. The images are great. The chemistry does work superb. Good job :)

Thank you for a great review! If you want more range and lower price, the FWD version might be interesting. I bought the FWD with the smaller battery, unsure whether that is available in US (I don't need more range, WLTP for this model is 440 km). I'm really satisfied (I went for the Plus and Pilot packs, mainly for better front lights, 360 degree cameras, heatpump, Harman Kardon speakers, nicer interior and panoramic glass roof).

Wonderful review. Thank you. All around, excellent car. In Volvos and Polestars, if no one is in the back, flip the back head restraints down for better view out of the back window. It's still a Swedish EV, however, but assembled in China and with a Chinese parent company. I do agree with wondering what the Polestar 3 will feel like using a bespoke chassis. We're to find out with Polestar 3. Hopefully you'll get an early one late this year to test. Great job.

I opted for the Model Y and I don't take delivery until June but I'm glad I did since almost on a weekly basis they're improving the cars. But I have to say that I followed Polestar 2 before they went to production and I was very impressed. It doesn't have enough room or range for me and when you're done adding options it's pretty much not worth the price tag. But that's just for my needs and wants. I happen to see one in person and they don't look as big as they sometimes appear on camera but it was a nice car to finally see in person. It's still a great looking EV and I hoe to see it do well in this EV space. We do indeed need more choices and varieties out there.

Recently rented one from Hertz. I found the high windowsill and ski-slope-like center console gave me the feeling of driving in a bucket, very much like a Ford Pinto. Cup holders are annoyingly far back for a short driver, and the styling groove around the shift lever platform seem designed to capture crumbs and trash. I’m not wild about the waffle-grill front. That said, it does drive with effortless speed. And you’ll be happy to hear that driving through the Arizona desert with a glass roof was no hardship at all.

I notice the charging port is on driver's side rear. I think this is important. Tesla will, eventually, open their charging network and being able to charge without taking up 2 charging spaces will make all EV owners happier. Tesla might even consider restricting other makes of cars to designs that would not block 2 (or more) spaces.

love to know the reason for the 1” wider rear wheels.
@phillyphil1513
@phillyphil1513 2 жыл бұрын
@@RickyLourenco A: handling dynamics, widening the rim (but keeping the same width tire F/R) has the effect of "stiffening" the side wall at the rear. it's a "tuning variable/technique" (think changing springs or anti-roll bar) taken from racing/motorsports. the EXTREME example of this can be seen with the "stretched tires" running huge amounts of negative camber on the vehicles in the JDM/STANCE community, of course they're doing it purely for aesthetics. #VIPCARS

Don't understand why anyone would spend 4000 extra dollars for leather seats when the Weave tech is perfectly comfortable and innovating. Every car has leather seats these days so you can't call it a luxury feature. Frankly, leather sucks. It gets too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter.

Excellent and well balanced review. Well done! I like the car's exterior design, but I have some reservations about the interior. First, putting "Napa Leather" inside doesn't make sense for a car that wants to be more sustainable. It's the old idea of luxury that is questionable in terms of comfort and also ethics. Secondly, I prefer physical controls for things that are commonly used while driving, such as heating, a/c and ventilation.

I get your point about leather, but at the same time as long as we're using the animal, why don't use all of it? But I would probably go for a quality cloth option if available just because it is more comfortable. I don't like plastic fake leather, it's not sustainable or comfortable IMHO.
@sneaky_krait7271

They have other options too. But it's stupid to stop with leather as long as we eat meat. Right now there is already so much leather that is just thrown away, 300 million hides per year globally. Using leather literally saves both waste and co2 as these hides get burnt.

Michael’s influence behind the camera is definitely felt in this video, well done! I like this car in concept, but it feels to me like all EVs (except for the Model 3) are being built to the same market right now: premium crossover. I know the Polestar 2 isn’t intended to be a crossover, but with how high the roof is and how high it rides, it looks like one of the “coupe” crossovers, like an X6 or GLE Coupe. I’d like to see a newer EV built to fill the market that’s being left open by vehicles like the Bolt, Kona, and Leaf, but built on newer EV platforms with RWD standard, AWD optional, 3.5-4mi/kWh highway efficiency and a sub-$40k price tag. Faster charging speeds and big batteries are less important if the vehicle is actually efficient.
@benjaminsmith2287
@benjaminsmith2287 2 жыл бұрын
Have you seen one in person? It's nowhere near the height of an x6 or GLE coupe. It's actually lower than a Toyota Camry overall. It's very much a sedan with a slightly, and I mean slightly, raised ride height. It doesn't feel or look like a crossover in real life. The Kia Ioniq 6 will be a sedan. It's hard to make sedans currently because of the crossover, high-riding craze the market is in now. But the Ioniq 6 will be at least $50K. sub-40K is going to be difficult to market because it's hard to make a profit off of EVs at that price. Most sell at a loss even with the $50K price they carry.

Appreciate the review. There is one big mistake however. You mentioned the ability to switch driving modes between re-gen branding being ON/OFF and having different settings and said that Tesla also offered this. ALL new Teslas force the driver into one strong re-gen setting and you cannot turn it off on Tesla. This is a massive advantage to Polestar and one of the main reasons I chose Polestar over Tesla.

I love the looks of the Polestar 2 and the Volvo XC40 Recharge, but I don't like the efficiency/Miles per KwH. I drive a Bolt and it just sips electricity. The Bolt is just a short termer until vehicles are more plentiful again. I'm considering this, but need to drive one soon.
@carlxlinify
@carlxlinify 2 жыл бұрын
If you already got a short termer, may worth waiting for a bit longer till the battery technologhy progresses for another one generation or 0.5 generation. Nio is releasing a new model ET7 this year with half-solid-state battery. I am expecting more EV manufacturer to follow this trend. Others may be aiming directly on the full solid state battery, which will bring revolutionary improvement to both capacity and safety (but will be 3years+ wait).

Even with the cheaper version for 2022 in Canada, it still does not qualify for the federal rebate. 8k in Quebec does however. So at 50k, with the provincial rebate taking care of the 15% sales taxes, it's still too expensive.

The next Polestar, Polestar 3, will be made in South Carolina, and will be an "American EV"? I can't wait either.

Yeah, besides being called a "Chinese EV," this was a wonderful review. I really appreciate how the background of Polestar was given. I think the reviewers really conveyed the high quality and premium feel of the car. But I think the fit and finish could be even better. It's very good but I want to see better on the Polestar 3, especially since it'll be $75K plus.

Looks really cramped and the console is massive and makes the car feel even more cramped. They need to break away from the multi platform stuff too. The digital display is very nice and the android automotive is a questionable "feature" I would have to look into. As Robin G said I too "prefer physical controls for things that are commonly used while driving, such as heating, a/c and ventilation."

The Polestar 3 and all Polestars going forward will have a completely different interior with a much more open feel. The 2 is the only model with that console. Also, the Polestar 3 and later will be on a bespoke platform and that is said to be coming out late this year as an "aerodynamic SUV" about the size of a Volvo xc90 or BMW x6.

The latest In Depth by Now You Know shows the one thing you failed to compare in this video. The charging network. Without ease of charging, I literally don't care if a different company can reproduce a clone of a Model Y, because if you have to muck about with 20 different charging apps, when you are stuck in the middle of nowhere, just to use a 24kw plug at a Harley Davidson dealership to get enough juice to limp to an Electrify America charger to get maybe 70kw on a bad day, with kids in the car driving you crazy because they wanted to be home by now, it doesn't matter how nice the car is. It's still not as nice of an experience as a model with the ability to charge easily anywhere in the US on a network that has far better up time and ease of use than any other network. Without the charging network, which for Electrify America and the rest, is lucky to have 2 stalls per location, and if working, could already be in use, plus a line up of others waiting, the other OEM's WILL FAIL. Tesla's typical location has 10 stalls, not 2, and they usually work. The ease of use is a total weight off anyone's mind. With a Tesla, you are not buying the car, you are buying access to ease of charging. That's why they sell so well. People will always take the path of least resistance. If all car manufacturers other than Tesla, don't seriously start putting some effort into locating their chargers at places people actually want to visit, and put enough of them in to be useful, with plug and play ease of use, there is no saving them. That's just the fact of the matter. Most people just don't see it yet. I'm not impressed with Tesla's right to repair issues, or difficulty of service, but unless you crash a lot, that's not something that would stop someone buying into the best use case scenario on the market for EV's.

No. Tics in Tourette wax and wane in a somewhat unpredictable way, and the accent tic is in a waning period, though it crops up now and again still (I was "British" for several hours a few days ago). The only meds I take for the TS these days is a tic suppressant before bed, because my tics can be quite bad in my sleep, which leads to poor sleep quality and has led to pain and injury on many occasions. But the suppressant that works ok for me is too fatiguing to be safe to use during the day. - Winter

Personally after a test drive, I felt the interior is too tight for a taller person and the suspension is stiff. I want an auto retractable roof sun shade. Its regenerative braking is more annoying than some other EVs and it is too expensive to what it offers. Exterior looks fine and information systems are very good.

I really liked the intro, but the audio recording and mixing wasn't great -- a bit hollow and echo-ey, and overwhelmed by the music. The audio recording in the main part was fine. Otherwise great job, if only I could afford a Polestar :)

Wait! 3 years from now you won’t believe how good Polestar will be. This is just a bata to see if it will take. The Chinese make excellent batteries and motors. They have zero experience with the 12 year 200,000 mile automotive life cycles we have in the US. Cars like this will help them test the waters. I would not spend my 60k + on this. When and if the Chinese can make a car that charges like this with a 250 mile range in the 30 to 45 k range they will have that market all to themselves. At least for the next 3 years. They are not ready for prime time. Not yet.

Not a huge fan of light coloured seatbelts. Unless you are an anally obsessive person who will routinely wash their hands before using the seatbelts - who does that, especially kids?, then light coloured seatbelts are just going to be grime magnet showing items. The yellow seatbelts in this car (look) snazzy but not terribly practical other than as intended purpose.

@@alexwilsonpottery3733 Yep! I've yet to be convinced that all those white interior Tesla owning parents are wholly truthful about it, "wiping right off". I personally prefer sheepskin car seat covers. Cool in summer, warm in winter, don't make you sweat and are washable. Plus on a long drive, you tend not to get a numb bum.
