Together with state and community leaders, Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Alabama (TMMAL) held an event to celebrate the first of Toyota’s latest engine products for the all-new 2022 Tundra to come off the production line. These new engines, a hybrid electric powered twin-turbo V6 engine and the gas-powered twin-turbo V6 engine, usher in the next era of powertrains being assembled in Huntsville.
Toyota’s new twin-turbo V6 engine line was part of a $288 million investment that also added 450 new jobs. That represented the largest hiring need in Toyota Alabama’s history, boosting the plant’s total employment to 1,800. Completion of this project - originally announced in February 2019 - marked the fifth expansion at Toyota Alabama. Toyota Alabama’s total cumulative investment is $1.2 billion and now boasts an annual engine capacity of 900,000.
Toyota Alabama is the sole producer of both engine models for the 2022 Tundra in North America, creating long-term employment stability for the plant’s 1,800 workers.
“Our team members in Alabama recognize the confidence and trust Toyota places in us since we are the only plant selected to build engines for the all-new Tundra,” shared Jason Puckett, president of Toyota Alabama. “Launching the new twin-turbo V6 line and celebrating our 20th anniversary remind us here just how lucky we are to have such incredible team members who have made Toyota Alabama known as ‘the engine capital of the world.’”
At 142 yards, both of the twin-turbo V6 engine options for the 2022 Tundra are being built on the longest Toyota engine line in North America. The V6 Turbo line will produce a new engine every 58 seconds, with a capacity to build 18,000 engines each month. These additional engines push the total capacity for Toyota Alabama engine production to up to 900,000 engines per year.
The all-new 2022 Tundra goes on sale later this year. The standard i-FORCE 3.5L twin-turbo produces up to 389 horsepower and 479 lb.-ft. of torque. The i-FORCE MAX powertrain boasts 437 horsepower and 583 lb.-ft. of torque, making it the most powerful engine in the Toyota line-up.

Why did the Japanese have magic hands? It’s not the people that build it fits the standards to which the factories run and it’s the same. You’re forgetting that the previous tundra engine with easily make it to 1,000,000 miles and it was built here with parts from Japan. See you mentioned that they were also building in Japan.

The main issue of low fuel economy on the Tundra was not resolved with this engine. The fuel economy vs the V8 has not lived up to many buyers expectation. Many current and future owners would have loved the option of the V8 with a ten speed transmission. This would have been the greatest selling Tundra ever made. All the power with the economy of a 10 speed AND awesome new technology. We can dream…

This video perfectly explains why the V35A-FTS is having so many issues with the main bearing walking and destroying the entire engine. The reason you are seeing so many less failures on the LS 500 is because at least that engine is built in Japan. Modest? The 5.7 made 381 hp and 401lb-ft. The new setup makes 437 and 583lb-ft that's more torque and HP than any N/A truck engine especially the Ford 7.3 Godzilla V8 with 430hp and only 475 lb-ft. OVER Twice the displacement and still over 100lb-ft less torque. Not to mention that it has turbos from the factory so modifying it without voiding warranties are very easy. Turbo engines are very easy to get impressive hp bumps. Someone already proved a 56hp bump with the V6-TT I Force engine with a cold air intake and a tune. Not something we can get on our 5.7's without spending $7,000+ on a supercharger.

4:30 how did I know the failing wastegates were electric? Lol. GM perfected the wastegated turbo in 2001 for their diesel trucks. Simple diaphragm driven by pressure, no computer. Works great 20 years later. And if Toyota wants to use computers, use VGT turbos! Like holy shit Toyota, way to overcomplicate something simple. "...and it's called 'forced induction'..." 🤦‍♂️ My gen 2 Prius is great. There's good use of computers from Toyota.

GM DID NOT perfect the mechanical wastegate 🤣 you are joking right? The Germans and Japanese have been using them since the early 80s in MANY different applications from steel to strip
@bat__bat
@bat__bat Жыл бұрын
@@andrewsolis2988 well, I think you confused the term "perfect" with "invent". Anyway, I don't doubt many nationalities have also perfected the wastegate on a turbo. We're talking about American market trucks here. GM's application of a mechanical wastegate in their diesel trucks for the U.S. market beginning in 2000 was such a good application then that it is still in use today for 20 year old GM trucks and works quite well. I chose that as an example because it is relevant. Frankly, I don't see any German or Japanese light duty diesel trucks for the U.S market, much less ones using mechanical wastegates, so that's pretty irrelevant. My point was that Toyota overcomplicated the design and got screwed because of it. Why didn't they choose to manipulate a VGT with computer like every other light duty diesel truck automaker? Why choose to manipulate the wastegate instead? I drive a 2005 Toyota that uses computers/electronics heavily and it works fine. It's surprising that they'd have trouble getting the electronics right on a god damn wastegate.
@andrewsolis2988
@andrewsolis2988 Жыл бұрын
@@bat__bat No diesel truck apps in the US, correct, but a turbo is a turbo and the applocation in general was already in use for about 30 years regarding the year model you are specifying. The auto manufacturer doesn't even make their turbos, which is why they were "perfected" because the turbo companies...Garrett, Bosch, etc have already perfected the mechanical wastegates in the 80s
@jza80king
@jza80king Жыл бұрын
Variable geometric turbos are far from a perfect design. Look up "carbon deposit issues VGT" and you'll find lots of complaints and issues. Also the electric waste gate issue Toyota had was with the initial trucks that were built between Q3 of 2021 and 1st quarter 2022. That is a non issue now. People seem to forget that when the 5.7L V8 first came out, that engine was snapping cams and Toyota fixed that issue too. That didn't make the 3UR-FE unreliable at all.

I want a V8 like everyone else but new laws and regulations are forcing car manufacturers to step back from traditional methods of producing a car making things a headache. 🤕 the idea is to make less polluting cars. Which means new engines designs that are to complex, making these cars have a shorter lifespan. Now you gotta buy a few more cars in your life time causing you to make a bigger footprint in the ecosystem, 🤦 laws are dumb not toyota.

This engine is in all their bigger cars and Lexus models. So they aren’t losing money on it if it was designed for just one car. The Supra uses an I6 model. It’s possible for the next Supra they could switch to this engine.

Just had to replace an engine block on a 2023 tundra with only 15k miles at work, we were told by the fts that thousands of these motors were built with "metal contamination". What's ironic is that Toyota likes to continuously emphasize "fix it right the first time" to all of us technicians when these things are rolling off the line ready to blow up lol how would you feel paying a mortgage for a brand new truck then hear a knock knock knock, guess who's there?? Cylinder 5 ready to take an unintended early exit... if this happens to you out of warranty, your looking at 30k in parts alone, another 100 hours labor. Seems a bit much for an already overpriced Toyota vehicle
