Mariah, Whitney, Aretha, Barbara, Christina, are all top of my list too. I'm a huge fan of Janis Joplin. also Stevie Nick's. however, when it comes to pure vocal interpretation of the musical scale (apart from album sales, grammys, gymnastics etc), i go with Burt Bacharach. there is no one that comes close to Karen Carpenter. she was the greatest

Karen Carpenter was in my opinion probably the best singer and who also played the drums while singing which is not easy to do. Her voice was so beautiful so rich so clear and she could hit the low notes effortlessly. Her talents were underrated and today many young people are discovering her music and amazing voice which will live on forever. RIP Karen.

Linda Ronstadt is the greatest, most diverse female vocalist of her generation, imo. Country, rock, operetta, standards with Nelson Riddle, Mexican, Latin, and contempory pop. And successful in all these genres. Who else on this list can claim this? Plus, she was the biggest selling female artist of the 1970's.

Floor Jansen is one of the greatest. So versatile and can sing all different types to world class standard. For me she is the greatest of the past decade and number 1 modern day.

Donna Summer won five (5) Grammy Awards. I believe she is the only female artists to win Grammys in a variety of categories: 1-R&B/1-Rock/1-Dance/2-Inspirational. Although the Queen of Dance, she, along with Linda Ronstadt, was one of the most versatile recording artists of the 70s and 80s. Donna Summer was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the year after she passed. Still glad she made this list. Happy Whitney Houston got great props here.

Just Whitney can change the perspective of all music lover to the female singer because before her debut, the all female singer are like placed in the second class when they are at stage. The all male singers are priority (according to the article about music I've read). Tx

No they weren't. Barbra Streisand was the priority in all of her male duets. Judy was consider as the best performer of her time. Aretha Franklin sang with many males, and she always retained the superiority

So this isn't really based on anything tangible? I struggle with the notion that Beyonce is nearly in last place, Christina Aguilera above Ella Fitzgerald and Patti Labelle in honorable mentions but the icing on the cake is Adele in 4th place... Like What???

Of course it's based on tangible qualities -- we stated our criteria in the intro -- our opinion is just different than yours, that's all. And it wasn't just our opinion -- we looked at about 20 ranking lists of great singers to help formulate our rankings. No matter how anybody is ranked on any list everyone always disagrees because it's not THEIR ranking (which is really just their opinion but we all forget that sometimes). Adele has been immensely popular (by some metrics the most popular singer) ever since she broke onto the scene 15 years ago, and many fans and critics consider her the best singer in the world over that time period, so it is puzzling that she is your biggest objection on the list. But you're entitled to your opinion on what makes a great singer just like everyone else. Thanks for commenting.

@@ultimaterankings1154 Ok, so I'm assuming this list is basically just opinion and who you personally prefer? If so then I totally understand and that's fine. However, if this is based on judging strictly or mainly on the voice alone then I really don't know how you could find my objection to Adele's 4th place puzzling lol. Popularity and talent are very different things. The most popular singers today are average at best where as singers like Tori Kelly that are practically unknown are vocally on another level. I personally prefer Adele over a lot of artists including Beyonce but judging objectively there is literally nothing Adele has over Beyonce other than Timber IMO which is subjective. When you look at Range, Breath Support, Consistency, Melisma / Runs & Riffs, etc. it becomes more clear. Also, I agree you can't please everyone but the top 5 should always include Whitney, Mariah, Celine, and Barbra. Doesn't really matter the order as they're all on the save level vocally.

Undoubtedly the greatest vocalist of the 20th century…not just as a subjective personal opinion…Ella Fitzgerald regarded her as the greatest singer, as did the divine Leontyne Price (operatic legend)…I think it was Coltrane who said that “she did things with her voice that wind instrumentalists wouldn’t dare try!” A phenomenally gifted vocalist

Well praise be.. finally a greatest alltime female singers list not done by Watch MoJo that recognizes the angelic singing voice of the late Karen Carpenter who was the World's most beloved female singer of the 20th Century prove me wrong. Karen's voice was loved by millions of people from every nation on Earth and Karen is still very relevant and loved by millions to this day even tho Karen passed away close to 39 years ago.. thank's Ultimate Rankings for acknowledging the one and only Karen Carpenter.

You're welcome, take note of the Paul McCartney quote that we put in there. I am not purposely attempting to put down a competitor but I will respond to your comment since you mentioned Mojo. I am not a fan of many of their rankings -- I have no idea how they come up with them -- they don't seem consistent with how the I think a knowledgeable public on that topic would vote. I do lots of research on the popularity and success of the potential item or person that may be ranked, I look at lots of ranking lists by the general public and critics, and I read lots of comments to see where many people think the lists are way off before I do my rankings. (If am knowledgeable on the topic I put some of my personal opinion in the rankings; if I'm not, I don't.) In this instance, I knew of his angelic voice of Karen Carpenter because I grew with her and even found out when doing my research that she was a more respected drummer than I remember. My number one would be Christian Music Legend Sandi Patty. I love the way she sings those beautiful Christian Ballads. My favorite Christian album by her is Another Time, Another Place. Three of her duets won grammys. I've Just Seen Jesus with Larnelle Harris won a grammy, More Than Wonderful with Larnelle Harris won a grammy, and They Say with Deniece Williams. In 1987 she won a grammy for Morning Like This and in 1991 she won her fifth grammy for her project Another Time, Another Place. I personally love her rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. I don't think popularity should ever take precedence, unless the ranking is specifically about the most popular singers. Popularity doesn't equal greatest or greatness. It just means more people like a singer more than other singers. A lot of singers were very popular in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's, but they're not likely to be as popular today or 9 months ago. As such, how and to what degree did popularity take precedence here? Are some ranked lower because they are technically better singers, but they won less awards or had lesser nominations? I don't expect anyone from this channel to answer this, but it would be nice. 🙂

I'm sorry, but there is NO WAY that Adele even top 50, her technique is lousy and practical, many times, she only sings with power, but neither tuning nor vibrato, nothing about her is truly consistent, apart from the "passion" with which he sings. Seeing her over Celine Dion or Barbra Streisand is a joke.

Numerous Grammy voters, many critics, and million of her fans would strongly disagree with you. Your entitled to your opinion but to suggest that her only good singing qualities are her power and passion and everything else about her singing is poor is obviously not accurate. You left out Deanna Durbin, Judith Durham of the Seekers and Marilyn McCoo from the 5th Dimension. They may not be as popular as some of the people on the list but they had more natural singing talent.

If you say Madonna could have made the list than same applies to Britney too as shocking as it is the girl could actually hold a melody. Awesome list though well put together ❤️

Thanks. Madonna has 5 Grammy nomination for best vocal performance and Britney has none, I wouldn't put them in the same category although I think Britney is a good singer and has a good voice, but just not great. Thanks for commenting.

Ann Wilson is number 16 and Bonnie is mentioned in the honorable mentions (between rankings 10 and 11) -- not sure how you missed them. All the others were on the original list of over 100 famous singers that were considered but just missed the cut like a lot of other great singers. But thanks for commenting.
