About Top Gun: Maverick:
After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose”. Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

I love that her character is strong, smart and skilled without being preachy. Not a single male character in this movie is sexist or chauvinist. She's part of the family. That is the best way to deal with sexism in movies: removing it entirely from the script, instead of trying to lecture the audience.

I love the whole cast and all there characters, but pheonix/Monica Barbaro really stood out to me. A strong and beautiful woman that was treated equally. She wasnt just there to be eye candy or a love interest, nor was she a damsel in distress or a contrived girl power feminist, she was one of the pilots like everyone else and was an absolute badass. Charismatic, charming, gorgeous, I obviously have a new celebrity crush.

Even the fact that they had Bill Pullman's son star in the movie, gave the movie an extra layer of nostalgia and beauty. Top Gun Maverick brings back the 80s/ 90s era of big budget thrilling action blockbusters, so to have the son of Bill Pullman, who himself starred in one of the biggest 'save the day' action blockbusters in the form of Independence Day, was somehow quite moving to witness. Top Gun Maverick is about the elder statesmen of flying passing the torch to a new generation of pilots, so it's like life imitating art with Bill passing on the acting torch to his son.

My dad first showed me Top Gun when I was about 12 or 13. It's one of his few crying movies, he's told me before that he'll sit downstairs and sob over Goose's death as a grown man without any shame. I still remember watching Goose die and we were sitting there trying not to cry and my dad just leans over and goes "You're gonna see Tom Cruise in his underwear in a few minutes here."
